Abstract

This research critically evaluates the current planning and implementation of ecotourism development in the Indonesian part of the Heart of Borneo. In 2012, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono declared that Indonesia would pay more attention to forest preservation rather than exploitation. However, anthropogenic activities continue damaging the Heart of Borneo. Ecotourism development is viewed as a solution to mitigate the area’s environmental and socio-economic issues; however, development remains in the planning phase. Thus, this research aims to evaluate the planning of ecotourism in the Heart of Borneo and the extent development aligns with ‘best practice’. Taking a constructionist approach that utilised secondary document analysis, this research analysed 36 documents published by several non-governmental and governmental institutions, academic journals and online media in Indonesia. Several gaps were identified between the socio-environmental policies and the rhetoric produced by the government and ministries, highlighting an inconsistency on the governmental level in conducting sustainable tourism development. Local involvement also needs to be improved through partnerships to achieve the Heart of Borneo’s ecotourism development goals.

Abstract

The social solidarity movement began to spread during the COVID-19 pandemic as a form of collective movement among the community to help each other. In responding to this issue, this study aims to discuss the social capital owned by the Nglanggeran Tourism Village when facing COVID-19 which caused tourism activities to stop for three months (March 2021-June 2021). Analysis through social capital is useful in mapping the social capital ownership and its use in recovering tourism activities. Using a qualitative method, this study found the community's ability to survive the COVID-19 pandemic which was carried out by returning to their initial work as farmers to fulfill their daily needs. In addition, Pokdarwis also have an important role in bridging information with the government, which plays a role in granting permits to open tourism activities during the pandemic. Therefore, strengthening social capital needs to be carried out by tourism object managers as an effort to maintain and sustain tourism objects.

Abstract

This study seeks to understand the impact of the tourism crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the Kaliurang Tourism Area and the emerging vulnerabilities for tourism actors who make tourism their sole livelihood. To understand these conditions, pre-eliminary research was carried out as part of a series of research on tourism and COVID-19. This research was conducted by using qualitative methods from April to October 2021. The results of this pre-eliminary research clearly show that tourism actors in Kaliurang are experiencing a slump due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism, which is the main source of living, is in fact very vulnerable to a prolonged crisis. The impacts and risks that arise in Kaliurang are clearly seen in the economic and socio-cultural sectors. As an effort to survive the tourism actors in Kaliurang are trying to respond to this condition individually and in groups. However, the responses that arise are not only positive but also negative, such as friction and conflict.

Abstract

Most tourists visit Catholic pilgrimage tourism sites to 'pursue' holy water that is believed to cure disease and provide sustenance for them. This is what makes the miracle of holy water one of the unique attractions that play a role in shaping the tourist experience in various Catholic pilgrimage tourist attractions, including the pilgrimage tourism site of the Ganjuran Church complex. However, there is another special attraction that is so strong and prominent in the Ganjuran Church, namely the existence of forms of inculturation of Catholic religion in Javanese culture. This study aims to view and understand the role of the existence of forms of inculturation on the formation of tourist experiences in the Ganjuran Church. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach, in which the data collected are types of qualitative data based on the results of in-depth interviews, field observations, photographs and literature. The result shows that the Ganjuran Church has several inculturative forms that have influenced tourism experiences starting from the temple, the inculturative panels of Way of the Cross, the Javanese church, the musical-instrumental gamelan, the Tirta Perwitasari holy water, the inculturative statues of Catholic saints and the Schmutzer hall. Align with these results , this study indicates that the existence of inculturation in the church has played a role in shaping various types of experiences, ranging from religious, cultural to recreational experiences.

Abstract

Aside from maintaining its function as a traditional market, Pasar Beringharjo also serves as a batik-shopping destination for tourists who visit Yogyakarta. However, Batik(s) originated from Yogyakarta are not the only ones that can be found here, as other regions' Batik can also be obtained in Beringharjo. This indeed is a contradicting situation as souvenirs produced by local craftsmen embody important values for tourists. This study attempts to figure out how domestic tourists perceive the authenticity of batik in Beringharjo. Through the descriptive-qualitative study, 11 informants from various regions in Indonesia, except Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta province, were interviewed with a semistructured technique. The interview questions were developed from the adaptation of the souvenir authenticity theory by Littrell, Anderson, and Brown (1993: 204-207). The results indicate that domestic tourists perceive the authentic Yogyakarta batik as batik that does not originate from other regions; has high-quality materials; can not be bought in other regions; is made with the traditional "canting tulis" method; has unique characteristics; and uses the original colors of Yogyakarta.
