Abstract

Experimental study Q.n steam activation of biomaas char for manufacturing activated charcoal wa conducted in Forest Product Reaearch and Development Centre, Bogor. The material used in these experiment were coconut shell and mangrove wood. This study was intended to investigate the effect of temperature and reaction time on the activated carbon yield and quality.Treatment temperature given for adivation were three levels being 600, 700, 900°, with resvective reaction time 10, 2O, 30, 40, 50 minutes.steam flow rate was made constant at 0.5 kg/hr. the result showed that some of these Conditions could produce good quality activated carbon as determined by iodine index and phenol lndex. This quality is within the commercial standard made by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and the Indonesian Industrial Standard.The optimum processing condition for manufacturing coconut shell activated Charcoal was at 900° C activation tem­ perature and 40 minute of reaction time, and yield of 57.0% with the iodine number of 780,9 mg/g. The optimum condition for producing activated charcoal from bakau (Mangrove) was at 700° C within 40 minute. The yield was 78.0% and the iodine number of 689.9 mg/g or 69.0%.A compariaon of rasults with the surveyed data shows that the qualities of the activated charcoal obtained from the experiment is comparable with the activated carbon from the commercial brand.

Abstract

In this investigation, the pith content of the bagaBBe samples were 10, .20, and 30 psrcent. Cookinf trials incoporated varioulpercentt11es of soda (NaOH) bei'ltf 15, 18, and .20 percent, concecutively. The cbndition applied were tiB follow temperature, 11(f C (maintained for one hour­), and the ratio of bagaBBe liquor bei111  1  : ''3. 76. The results were anolyd using the factorial design with a si111le replicate.Experimental results show  that  the increase in pith  content gave a signifieant effect  on.  the raidual   allcaliand(reeneBB.  The increasi111 of NaOH percentage provided liighly significant effect on the ash content, Kappa number, and brightness. The. increasingof NaOH also provided a significan teffect on the residualalkali. The increasingof pith contenttend to grow up residual alkali (Y   ­0.84650 + 0,18433 X) and freeness (Y=  13.08718 + 0.13333 X). Produced by 16'% NaOH, the residual alkali posse1111ed a lower significant effect  than 18 and 20% NaOH, as well as, NaOH of 18% owned a  lower than .20%.  Furthermore, NaOH of  16% produced Kappa number a higher higly significant effect  than  18 and aO% NaOH, and 18% NaOH owned a higher than 20%. The percentages increase of pith  in   bagaseto 80% produced Bimiliar to.from  bagasse of  10% pith   content.

Abstract

At  the present  investigation two  lignins taere prepared for  the comparison of physicochemical properties. One represent«a lignin o'f)tained by evapomtion and the other represents a lignin isolated by pr­ecipitation.For each treatment, the, lignin products was refluxed  by ethanol, hot  water and unrefluxed.The result shows that the yield of lignin mnges from 21,98­38,21  percent, ash content from 29,31­51.,83 percent, silica content from 15,40­27,71   percent moisture content from 3,19­8,09,   methoxyl  content from 0,91­2,64  percent, pH from  4,01­5,09   phenol content from 2,14­7,52   percent, surface area from 29,0­42,0   m1/gr, lignin content from 67,11­80,16  percent and equivalent weight rangesfrom 2512,54­5277,  78.

Abstract

A  study   of  the  number   of  logging trucks  used  by  a forest  company   in. Riau  was carried out  in 1989.  To  evaluate the  number   pf  logging  trucks,   transport   times  and  load.  volumes  of  logging trucks  were collected  through  a work  time study.   The  objective   is to find  out  the  number  of  loggine trucks   which  meets  the  logging company's   production   target. The  investigation   comes  up  to  the  following   conclusion:1.Log  number  and  load volume  averages hauled  by Nissan  TZ  52  logging trucks  were 4 logs/trip  and  23.84  m3 /trip, respectively.   At  the  distance  of  21 km,  the  logging trucks  normally  took  190.65  minutes  (3.18 hours)  to transport logs from  the  forest  to  log yard.  Logging  trucks  could  transport  logs three  round  trips per  day.2. The  normal  average productivity    of  the  logging trucks  was 71.52  m3  per  day.3.The average productive   time  of  logging trucks  was 80%  while  the average non  productive   time  was 20%.4. The  number   of  logging  trucks  available  was 2 units  which  conformed   with  the  company's   production    target. For better  operations:  it is recommended   that  the company  has one additional  logging truck  to meet  its production  target in the  next  working  plan.
