Journal of Applied Linguistics (ALTICS) is an academic, open access, and peer-reviewed journal first published in 2019 by by English Education Departement, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Universitas Perjuangan Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. It aims to publish high-quality researches incorporating the broad fields of education including literature and linguistics in English Language Teaching. ALTICS encourages academics and authors to submit high quality written works that offer original research with interesting ideas and informative thoughts that could potentially open up new perspectives in the field of English Language Teaching. These may be in the forms of critical examination of current theories, integration of two or more scholastics hypotheses, or development of any work that may fall within the scope of English Language Teaching. Its issues are published twice a year in May and in November. Submissions are open year-around. It is important to bear in mind that the official language of the journal is English.

Abstract

According to curriculum 2013 at eighth grade junior high school level, English learners are able to speak English and use grammar in the conversation. However, there were some students’ difficulties in mastering grammar at eighth grade students of SM N 1 Gandrungmangu because of monotonous activity and limited time to study. Snowball throwing technique was proposed as a strategy to teach grammar. The goal of this study is to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of snowball throwing technique in teaching grammar at eighth grade students in SMPN 1 Gandrungmangu. This study used quasi-experiment and quantitative approach. The population of this study was the eighth grade students in SMPN 1 Gandrungmangu in academic year 2021/2022 which consists of 255 students. The sample was selected by purposive sampling with VIII G as experiment class and VIII H as control class. IBM SPSS V25 for windows was used to help analyze the data in this research. This study used pre-test and post-test with multiple choice to collect data. The result of independent sample t-test showed that there was improvement in learning achievement of the students who were taught using snowball throwing technique and it can be assumed that snowball throwing technique was used in teaching grammar is effective. Abstract

In the modern era, technology can help the teaching and learning process. There are many teachers and students that used YouTube to help them in the teaching and learning process. This research aimed to analyze students’ perceptions on the use of YouTube as learning media and analyze the use of YouTube for the lesson in speaking at the 9th grade of MTs Ma’arif NU 01 Kroya. The researcher was used descriptive qualitative research. The data were obtained through questionnaires and interviews. The researcher used triangulation for the trustworthiness of the data. The research subjects included students of the 9th grade. The results of the study of students’ perception on the use of YouTube as learning media in speaking at the 9th grade of MTs Ma’arif NU 01 Kroya, that are: 1) YouTube has advantages as learning media and for lesson speaking such as students can learn speaking directly from native speakers’ videos, so that students can improve their speaking, 2) YouTube also has disadvantages such as trouble when used like bad connection or there were advertisement that disturbed, and students cannot know the mistakes when they learn speaking independently from YouTube.

Abstract

The world is currently experiencing turmoil over the outbreak of the global pandemic Covid-19. To anticipate the transmission of the virus, the government has imposed an education policy for schools and universities to stop the offline learning process, and all activities are carried out online. Based on Circular No.002 of 2020 UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri Purwokerto which explains that UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri Purwokerto also implements online learning for all majors and all courses. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the use of e-learning in online writing class and students' perceptions of online writing class at the English Department of UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri Purwokerto.This research used qualitative descriptive analysis method. The data that used is qualitative data and supported by quantitative data. Qualitative data is obtained from the result of interview, observation, and documentation. While the quantitative data is obtained from questionnaire. The interview was done with interviewing a lecturer of writing class. The researcher did the observation four times through online by joining online writing class of UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri Purwokerto. Questionnaires were also given to students to analyse how their perception of the use of e-learning in an online writing class. Questionnaires were given to 2-TBI A and 4-TBI B students using Google Form. From the questionnaire, 44 student responses were obtained. The results of this research show that the online writing classes in UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri Purwokerto used Google Classroom to submitting and correcting the students' assignments, Google Meet for virtual classes, Telegram for discussions, and ECLASS for distributing the lecture materials. Then, students felt hard to understand the material and lack to understand the teacher's instructions. Furthermore, the result showed that most of the students responded positively to the strategies of the teacher in the online writing class. Abstract

This study aims to discover and explain the problems in learning English and to find out the expected support of a Thai student for the studies in English education department of UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri. The respondent was a Thai EFL student with four years of study abroad experience at UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach to describe findings based on in-depth interview transcriptions. Miles and Huberman's interactive model analysis was used to analyze the data. This study used data triangulation to ensure the validity of the data. The research result showed that the identified Problems in learning English stated by Mohammed Theory were experienced by a Thai student. This research found that the problems faced by a Thai student in learning English were cultural differences, accent, attitude, environment, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. While, other problems experienced beyond the theory mentioned, namely, grasping the lecturer explanation, understanding the learning material and lack of practice. The expected support of a Thai student for the studies at English education department of UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri, includes support from lecturers, language courses, counselling during the study period, native speakers and English competition.
