Abstract

ABSTRACTIn October 2000, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1325 in which sexual violence was framed as a legitimate international peace and security issue. It brings to light the gender-dimension associated with problems faced by women and girls in time of armed conflict, especially with regards to the use of rape as a weapon of war. As the nature of war and armed conflict over the last two decades has shifted from predominantly inter-state to intra-state, this paper aims to provide another perspective to understanding violence against women in armed conflict at a domestic rather than international level. This paper focuses on the case of Boko Haram’s violence against women and girls in Nigeria, which was especially underscored by its kidnapping of the Chibok schoolgirls in 2014 that drew widespread outrage both locally and internationally. It explores how economic deprivation, institutional failures and culturally-institutionalised norms of Nigerian society goes hand-in-hand with Boko Haram’s anti-Western and anti-Christian ideology, alongside its changing operation tactics, in perpetuating violence against women and girls. Keywords: Sexual Violence, Armed Conflict, Boko Haram, Nigeria, Chibok Schoolgirls' KidnappingDOI:https://doi.org/10.33005/jgp.v3i02.1934

While the Shia Imami has idealistic state model Wilayatul faqih, but in the context of Indonesia, the Shia Imami has no agenda to establish a model of the country. There are fundamental differences between these two groups on the state model. Therefore there are different steps to realize these ideals. Abstract

ABSTRACTWhile most of the theories of regionalism give more focus on the study of regional institutions (neo-liberal institutionalism approach), or on the identity aspect of regionalism (constructivist approach), regionalism can also be analyzed under the international political economy (IPE) framework. Kevin G Chai in his book, The Politics of Economic Regionalism, uses (IPE) theory to analyses the regional economic integration in East Asia. The increasing number of regional FTAs as the new form of regionalism is basically driven by strategic interest, such as economy and politics. This paper seeks to explain the ‘new regionalism’ in Asia Pacific (the noodle bowl of FTAs), by understanding the geo-political and geo-economic aspects of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). There are two main arguments here: 1) under the ‘new regionalism’, the driving force of this regional FTAs is not regional identity but geo-politic and geo-economic value of particular region; 2) The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) can be viewed as the form of dependency to the geo-economy and geo-politics interests of the major economy powers in Asia Pacific region. The main section for this paper is divided into four parts. The first one is the history of new regionalism and the IPE theoretical approach. The second one is the dynamics of economic regionalism process in Asia Pacific region. The third one is the geo-political and geo-economic aspects of ASEAN for Asia Pacific Regionalism frameworks. Keywords: New Regionalism, Economic Regionalism, Geo-political, Geo-economyDOI:https://doi.org/10.33005/jgp.v3i02.1937

Abstract

ABSTRACTGeographical Indication (GI) is one of Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs)’ working areas. Various products registered as Geographical Indication (GI) could be found in many developed countries because since 100 years ago, their farmers have respected the relation between traditional products and place where those products were originated. However, the same thing has not done by farmers in developing countries, thus only few of their traditional products which have been registered as GI to obtain legal protection. In fact, regarding of the developing countries’ geographic potentials, if they could realize the high economic value of products produced from such geographical potentials, they will be benefitted by the existence of GI. Theoretically, TRIPs is profitable if countries could maximize the role of TRIPs. TRIPs’ role is not only considered from how the legal protection of TRIPs could avoid losses caused by criminal act, but also from how TRIPs could add the value of those products to put them in the best prices. However, practically, the role of TRIPs is still controversial in developing countries because they are still upholding their traditional cultural values, while the intellectual property rights tend to be related with the use of modern technologies. One form of such controversies could be seen in the context of Serrano Cheese in Brazil, which shows how GI affects the traditional cultural heritage of indigenous people. Keywords: Geographical Indication, TRIPs, Serrano CheeseDOI:https://doi.org/10.33005/jgp.v3i02.1936

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe entire world is facing significant challenges in the coming decades. It has been demonstrated that many countries must prepare themselves to face a considerable rise in food consumption and corresponding food waste. There must be a cooperation of consumers, retailers, producers and government to solve this complex issue. Their efforts to decrease food waste would offer a significant sustainable alternative to scale up food manufacturing that leading to a stabling food security internally and internationally. Governments and businesses should develop food loss and food waste prevention throughout the entire supply chain. There should be a higher effort on decreasing post-harvest losses in early stages in the food value chain in the developing countries. Meanwhile, in the developed countries, the government should have policies to reduce food waste at consumer level which could minimize food being unnecessarily thrown away. Governments should also support the establishment of independent organizations which could facilitate and assess efforts to decrease food waste, such as the WRAP in the UK in grocery and hospitality supply chain. Keywords: food loss, food waste, food value chain, reuse, cycleDOI:https://doi.org/10.33005/jgp.v3i02.1933

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research proposes the idea that IDN-G, as a non-governmental institution, has been transforming the Indonesian diaspora posture in the context of globalization and nationalism. IDN-G has been a crucial part in giving positive discourse to Indonesian diaspora, improving Indonesian democracy, increasing the number of social philanthrophy, and in enforcing the dual citizenship law. On another hand, IDN-G takes role in encouraging Indonesian economy by remittance, investment, and organization. With the existence of IDN-G, Indonesian diaspora introduces a new form of Indonesian nationalism, which called long-distance virtual nationalism. It articulates Castell’s network society, Habermas’ virtual public sphere and Anderson’s long distance nationalism. Finally, IDN-G brings new characteristics on Indonesian diaspora, they are 1) Indonesian diaspora is not only labor migrant, 2) it contributes not only in economy, but also in social and politics, and 3) the diaspora is not state-driven, but it is society-driven.Keywords: IDN-Global, globalization, nationalism, virtual, Indonesian diasporaDOI:https://doi.org/10.33005/jgp.v3i02.1939

Abstract

ABSTRACTAn analysis is given of UNESCO and UNICEF’s current thinking and practice in the education sector, especially on a human rights-based approach. Economically irrational policy implementation can be a result of inefficiency and ineffectiveness of resource allocation; therefore, policy assessment is necessary. Moreover, the deadline for EFA goals is approaching and it seems that EFA goals will not be met under current policy implementation by 2015. This paper bases its analysis on economic theory and offers policy implications and suggestions through a thought experiment and empirical case studies. An analysis is conducted in two levels, general perspective on education and specific aid projects/programmes. Analysing policies from economic perspective gives a new impression and dimension towards UNESCO and UNICEF. This paper argues that a human rights-based approach is economically rational and sustainable. Identifying rights-holders and duty-bearers cannot only induce demand and supply for education but also theoretically make individuals’ demand for education to be more inelastic to the prices or costs of education. However, in terms of effectiveness of project/programme investment, adjustments are required in the process of project/programme implementation. As a result, there is an ambiguous tension between theoretical and practical issues. Policy implications and suggestions are made accordingly. Keywords: Policy analysis, Human rights-based approach, Multilateral donor agenciesDOI:https://doi.org/10.33005/jgp.v3i02.1932
