Abstract

The study seeks to understand the relationship between lending interest rate, inflation rate and capital formation in Kenya. Time series from World Bank for the 1988 to 2018 is employed. Development of literature is guided by expectation theory, classical theory of interest rate and the institutionalist theory of capital formation. The study finds capital formation, lending interest rate ad inflation rate time series data to be stationary at the 5% level of significance. This leads to the checking of the lag order used and estimating of VAR model. The results indicate that, current year’s; capital formation, inflation rate and lending interest rate are insignificant in determining next year’s level of capital formation. First lag of inflation rate is found positively significant in influencing lending interest rates as well as the first lag of lending interest rate is found significant on influencing itself. Capital formation first lag is found to be negatively significant in determining inflation rate. Lastly, inflation rate first lag is found to be positive

Abstract

Urbanisation is a growing issue in Longleng. So are the consequent solid waste generation and its management challenges. Population growth has a positive impact on urbanization process. This article is intended to explain the common problems facing public services today and the challenges faced by both the urban planners and the government. The paper reviews an overview of solid waste management generation in urban Longleng. Solid waste management which is already an immense task in urban Longleng is going to be more difficult with the expansion of urbanization, increase in consumerism and changing life style. The result shows that residential (59.5%), commercial (20%), institutional (16%), biomedical wastes (0.30%), construction and demolition (4.2%) contribute to solid waste generation. The current practices of dumping waste materials in urban areas have shaped serious environmental and public problems. Financial resources constraints, institutional policies weaknesses, and public indifference towards solid waste have made this situation worse. This research article evaluates the current practices prevalent to deal with this solid waste and problems associated with it. It also provides the measures to deal with this waste in a healthy and environmental manner so that it may prove a resource instead of waste. The results of this study will be of immense benefit for urban-related studies in small towns as well as for the urban planners in the district.

Abstract

The study analysed the effect of credit risk on the profitability of banks listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange. Annual data of 8 out of the 9 banks listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange were used and a panel data regression model was used to analyse the financial reports of the selected banks. It was found that the profitability of banks listed on GSE is not influenced by Non-Performing Loans Ratio (NPLR), Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR), Asset Growth Ratio (AGR) and leverage ratio (LEV), however, Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) and cost per loan asset (CPLA) influence the profitability of banks. The result shows that 49.5% of change in profitability of banks listed on GSE is attributable to the independent variables in the model. The study recommended among other things that the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and other supervisors/regulators of the banking sector should focus on other profit indicators either than credit risk if they want to influence the profitability of banks. Also, management of banks listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange should pay attention to capital adequacy ratio (CAR) and Cost Per Loan Asset (CPLA) which have significant influence on profitability. Finally, future studies should consider the effect of liquidity risk, market risk or operational risk on profitability of banks listed on the GSE.
