Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the influence of explicit technique in teaching writing to the students whose learning preference is sociological learning style. This research was a pre-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test conducted at English Education Department of UIN (Universitas Islam Negeri) Alauddin with 30 students as respondents. They were divided into two groups: individual sociological learning style (ISLS) and group sociological learning style (GSLS). The data were collected through an essay test and Sociological Learning Styles Inventory. The results of students’ essay tests were analyzed by using SPSS version 20. The data analysis and interpretation indicated: 1) there was a significant difference for students whose learning preference ISLS before and after treatment. 2) there was a significant difference for students whose learning preference GSLS before and after treatment. 3). there was a significant difference for students whose learning preference between ISLS and GSLS before and after treatment. In conclusion, there is no significant difference between students whose learning preference ISLS and ISLS before and after treatment. Sociological learning style does not have any influence on students’ achievement score in teaching writing by using explicit technique. The achievement gained was probably caused by the treatment by using explicit technique. In the end, explicit technique can increase students’ writing ability for both ISLS and GSLS students.

Abstract

It is widely assumed that constructing negation in an L2 is often quite affected by the syntactic features of the speakers’ mother tongue. This study, therefore, set out to assess the English negation construction, particularly in the context of Indonesian learners of English in Sulawesi-Barat. Data for this study were collected using an interview to investigate the pattern of negation construction and the L1 influences related to the construction. For the purpose of analysis, the data transcription was carried out on the completion of the interview and segmented into AS-Unit. Results suggest that the participants mostly constructed negation in the form of auxiliary + not + phrase in their second language. The second major finding was that there are transfers from the students’ L1 in constructing negation in their L2. The example of English negation which might be not representative enough makes an overall conclusion about English negation construction extremely difficult.

Abstract

By replicating Feng (2019) with some modifications, this study aimed to identify the acquisition pattern of two kinds of English definiteness, anaphoric and non-anaphoric. Being a language without article system, Mandarin Chinese employed demonstrative determiners to function as definite article and shared the same features as English definite article “the”. In the current study, the participants were 3 L1-Chinese and 3 L1-Indonesian L2-English learners, who engaged in an Acceptability Judgement Task (AJT) and a post-task interview. Align with Feng’s finding, this study revealed that Chinese participants encountered less difficulties than their Indonesian counterparts in the use of ‘the’, as a possible result of L1 transfer; and that Chinese participants underperformed in bridging conditions, indicating the challenge of presupposition at the semantics-pragmatics interface.

Abstract

The research aimed to find out whether journal writings developed students’ writing skill. The method employed in this research was a pre-experimental design, where a pretest, a treatment and a posttest were given to measure students’ writing skill. The instrument of this research was writing tests which consisted of two guided themes. The population of this research was the ninth-year students of SMP Negeri 18 Makassar in academic year of 2017/2018. The total sample of this research consisted of thirty students. A cluster random sampling technique was used. The data collected was analyzed through descriptive statistical analysis. The results of the paired-sample t-test of this research indicated that there was a slight development of the students’ posttest scores after applying journals in their assignments within six meetings. The students mentioned that the interesting themes made them excited to write. In writing the personal narrative, the students were trained to find the stories they think are best for sharing with others. Therefore, the data analysis tended to show the relation between journal writings and the students’ skill in writing. However, not all students can be easily encouraged to write.

Abstract

The interest in learner identity within the field of second and foreign language acquisition has been garnering increased attention. This increase can be understood due to the shift from the dominance of psycholinguistic approach to a greater demand for including socio-anthropological dimensions in the field of second language acquisition (SLA). In SLA, the relationship between learner identity and language learning can provide the field with a more comprehensive theory on the link between learners and the larger social world and how it can accommodate the learner’s language learning. Accordingly, this paper looks for how language learner identity is constructed through language learning and how it can eventually benefit the practice of language teaching and learning.
