Abstract

The conversion of C. S. Lewis to Christian theism weaves together his quest for joy and his evolving view on the power of imagination. Lewis' acceptance of Christianity raises questions about the nature of the relationship between these two fundamental elements of his philosophical evolution: joy and imagination. In this article, we aim to clarify this aspect of Lewis' intellectual and spiritual life by considering his philosophical development. The essential relationship between joy and imagination becomes clear only if we consider Lewis' intellectual journey from Atheism to Idealism and then to Christian theism. In this article, we consider Lewis' intellectual development from the moment he adopted his own version of subjective idealism.

Abstract

A problem raised in the text of 1 Samuel 10:27, since the word כמחריש in Masoretic Text is conspicous both in terms of the text transmission as well as in the level of exegesis. In the context of the narrative, after appointing Saul as the first king of Israel, some of the people seem to question Saul’s credibility. This leads to harsh comment on the new king. Interestingly, some interpretations seem to portray a kind of Saul’s response to the comment in 1 Samuel 10:27, while others completely silence. This article will come with a suggestion to the passage by imploring textual criticism, deciding the possibly fitting word for כמחריש, considering its larger narrative context, and then doing lexical-syntactical analysis to the passage. This article contends that the correction made by the LXX that supported by the DSS and Josephus’ writing is closer to the original.

Abstract

This paper aims to review how Herman Bavinck uses Proverbs 8:22-31 as wisdom literature in Reformed Dogmatics by conducting a literature study through a qualitative-comparative approach. With this approach, the author will discuss the concept of using wisdom literature in Bavinck's systematic theology, especially in Reformed Dogmatics. After that, this paper will discuss a case example of how Bavinck uses Proverbs 8:22-31 in Reformed Dogmatics, especially in the doctrine of the Triune God. The paper concludes that Bavinck is a theologian who can articulate his systematic theology in a contextual and organic way (paying attention to the whole organism of Scripture) with faith that submits to the Bible through the way he uses and appreciates Proverbs 8:22-31 as a genre of wisdom literature according to its context from the Old Testament to the New Testament.

Abstract

One of the most difficult flashpoints between biblical studies and confessional theology is the study of Jesus—whether we define this as studying the historical Jesus or studying Jesus historically—and thechurch’s creedal Christology. In this essay, I consider the dangers of Nestorianism in modern studies of Jesus. First, I outline the dangers and tensions between the study of the historical Jesus and the church’s creedalstatements about Christ. Second, I discuss the relationship between creeds and Scripture. Third, I consider briefly what we can say about Nestorianism, and how one arguably finds echoes of Nestorianism in modern approaches to the historical Jesus. Fourth, I offer six suggestions for a way forward for those who seek to honor both the church’s creedal traditions and the witness of the New Testament.

Abstract

A servant follows his master. Malchus, whose ear was cut off, followed the blind and deaf old high priest. The snake that is often depicted as Satan is an animal that does not have ears. Thus, the offspring of the serpent follow their father. When on the day of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, these chief priests bribed the soldiers to lie about the events of the resurrection. Those fluent in the Torah violate the Torah, which clearly says that bribery blinds the eyes of those who see or are wise. One of the characteristics of those of us who serve the true high priest is the use of our ears. Christ said that the ears that hear are blessed.
