Abstract

Gerrit Cornelis Berkouwer was a significant Dutch Reformed theologian. This article will observe Berkouwer’s concept of imago Dei based on systematic-biblical method. In other words, biblical concept will only support the systematic-theological based discussion. It will be demonstrated through this article that, in comparison to previous approaches of explaining the concept of the image, Berkouwer had made a significant contribution. That contribution is found in his emphasis on the functional aspect of being the image. In doing this, on one hand, he followed the path of Reformatory tradition, but on the other hand, he also diverted from the Reformatory tradition on some issues about the concept of the image. Abstract

At the end of the 20th century discussions about human freedom has become discussions about free will. Discussions about this topic end up with the polemic between autonomy and heteronomy. The idea of autonomy tries to eliminate all limitations that obstruct human freedom. But after all the limitations have been eliminated, there are some raise questions about internal authority in a person’s self that limits him or her. In the opinion of the writer, theologians who approaches the problem of human freedom as a ‘freedom from’ would never touch the essence of human freedom. Gerrit Cornelis Berkouwer discusses human freedom not with the ‘free from’ approaches that will lead to a secularistic humanism but tries to look at the meaning of freedom biblically, that is “true freedom.” This kind of freedom does not depend on both external nor internal authorities, but rather depend on the hope of eschatological liberation where the believers will be in full obedience to Christ. Abstract

The continuity in the Orthodox understanding of the two wills of Christ, which is based on His two natures (Dyothelitism) is very important in order to understand about the Person of Christ, and how the work of redemption was perfectly performed by Him during His incarnation as the Logos that assumed a human nature. Dyothelitism which was represented by the thought of Maximus the Confessor is a reference in order to understand the Christology of two natures – one Person of Chalcedon, which has been accepted by the Church as an orthodoxy in the fight against Monothelitism and Monoenergism. The continuance between Maximus the Confessor’s Dyothelite thoughts and the thoughts and works of John Calvin in his Christology, is very important for the understanding of the implementation and perfect fulfillment of Christ's atoning work in the view of Reformed theology as represented by Calvin. Abstract

This article seeks to promote an interest of the audience to read the Imitation of Christ, the second most read book by both Protestants and Roman Catholics after the Bible. The book is dated to pre-Reformation time and provides fruitful soil for the Reformation by keeping close to the Scripture and the primacy of Christ. The book’s three main motives sound strangely familiar to modern ears: the basic pairs of opposition coloring the current fabric of reality, the sovereignty of God, and the obedience of God’s people. Even today the book remains fresh with its honesty and practical value, despite its being firmly grounded in doctrinal rocks. KEYWORDS: Imitation of Christ; Thomas a Kempis; practical theology

Abstract

Discipline for children in the family has presented a dilemma between two extremes which keep repeating ranging from violence to neglect. Similar dilemma is also faced by Christian families in Indonesia. Therefore, this essay seeks to describe and re-analyze the relevance of William Gouge’s view on the concept of discipline for children, one of the Puritans who faced similar dilemma in his era. It is to be considered as an alternative concept of discipline for children in Christian families today in Indonesia. Gouge seeks to bring back the biblical concept of order and definition of discipline, as well as all the elements that should exist in the discipline of children in the family. This study concludes that Gouge’s view is relevant and can be one alternative to face the dilemma in Indonesia.
