Abstract

Discourse analysis has been a study that attracts many intelectuals of various disciplines to discuss about, generating the emergence of theories of their own perspectives. Many criticisms for the theories also show that intelectuals are more interested in this field leading to make discourse analysis as a multidisciplinary study. Based on this ground, Norman Fairclough seeks to reconstruct discourse theory as a criticism to the existing theories, which tends to be side-emphasis and partial on the basis of their own discipline. Combining three traditions, i.e. linguistic, interpretative, and sociological traditions, he offers a discourse model integrating three dimensions: text, discourse practice, and social practice. Each dimension has its area, process, and analysis model, in which all of them dialectically connect to one another. In addition, Fairclough also formulates another important concept, namely intertextuality, which affirms the interrelation of various texts and discourses to a text. This concept will also create ideological effect of structuration and restructuration of the prevalent discourse order. When power and ideology embed in a discourse, intertextuality will function as a mechanism for maintaining and changing the domination relation.

Abstract

This paper is a literature review (literature research) that uses John Esposito’s books as primary data sources and other figures’ statements about the relationship between Islam and the West as its secondary data source. The method of analyzing data used descriptive, interpretative, and analytical methods. The findings of this research are: first, based on historical fact, there is strong theological bond between Islam and the West, i.e. there are common ground and similarities between Islam and the West who inherited the Jewish and Christian traditions. These three religions inherited the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim. However, existing theological equation between Christianity and Islam became the cause of the collision between the two. Second, the historical problems between Islam and the West can be seen from the root of the conflicts, which include theological and political ones. Conflict between Islam and the West are covered with political motives. In contrast, religion is only used as a theological justification to culturally and theologically distinguish Islam and the West. Basically the difference is more driven by political interests. Third, as an effort to build a global coalition agreement, both sides should actively promote cooperation. Therefore, the most important thing is that the meet between Islam and the West should be interpreted as a civilization dialogue, not confrontation or distrust. the Building ideal relationship as well as the need for harmonization between Islam and Western civilization are also needed.

Abstract

This paper discusses the existence of religion in globalization era.Religious values, which are private, sacral, and transcendent, interact with theglobalization circle, which seems to be contradictory with religion.Globalization is utilitarian  as its nature and it results in vanish of local values or cultures. However, none can avoid, neither can religious people. Responds to globalization frequently occur in extreme behavior since some people thinks that globalization will threat their existence in this world. Such responds make the people labeled as fundamentalists or terrorists, and many of them have religious background.  Some of religious groups extremely rejecting globalization can be found states of former USSR, Japan, and Iran. Finally, this paper presents the forms and  positions of  religion suggested by four figures, i.e. Immanuel Wallerstein, John Meyer, Roland Robertson, and Niklas Luhmann. They suggest that the religions will keep their existence if they adopt the values of globalization and make themselves the instrument of communication as well as political and economic interaction of the world’s interaction. Religion should evolve from narrow mindedness to a broader, new, and universal values.

Abstract

This study was aimed at explaining NU’s strategies on spreading the idea of pluralism, tracing how NU meant racial differences, how NU react to pluralism on religion, which is a reality of Indonesian society and how NU treated cultures of Indonesian different tribes and custom. The approach used in this study was theological-anthropological one. This study was limited to the time of Gus Dur (1984-1999), K.H. Hasyim Muzadi (1999-2010) and K.H. Said Aqil Siraj (2010up to present). This study found that NU has some strategies in spreadingout the idea of pluralism, namely through The Wahid Institute (established byGus Dur et all), through International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) as a media to spread out the idea of pluralism and the attitude towards racial, language, religion, pluralism tribe, and custom pluralism (established by Hasyim Muzadi), and through interfaith dialogue (initiated by K.H. Said Aqil Siraj), which is aimed at respecting differences as a disposition. In addition, NU also gives scholarships for Afghanistan’s students to study pluralistic Islam in NU University in Indonesia.

It is also revealed that this behavior was influenced by direct social political environment, namely family, religion, education, and group relation.
