Teaching English as a Foreign Language Overseas Journal (TEFLO) is a Journal of English Education Study Program of Universitas Kristen Indonesia Toraja (p-ISSN:2461-0240) is a scientific journal published third a year in April, August and December. It was established on 25th September 2016 for printing. TEFLO publishes articles as the results of research and scientific work either empirical or conceptual. This journal focuses on both research and conceptual articles done by any English teacher or lecturer within Indonesia or overseas countries. It allows any writer to submit up to 8-12 pages or equivalent with 2500 to 4000 words in range. It applies APA style in all articles submitted to this journal. While the scopes include English Language Teaching (ELT) in EFL or ESL context, English applied linguistics (EAL) in any form: empirical or conceptual. TEFLO focuses on and welcomes researchers in both EFL and ESL contexts to publish professional or conceptual articles, and research articles formed in a qualitative and quantitative study in the area of the following scopes: Analysis of English pieces of literature in the English Education Context Discourse Analysis in the English Education context ELT Material Development English Applied linguistics English for Specific Purposes English Language Testing and Evaluation Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Anthropolinguistic Tourism and Local Wisdom issues

Abstract

The objectives of the research are; (i) to find out the kinds of lecturers’ personalities they have at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja, (ii) to describe whether the lecturers’ personalities affect students’ learning motivation at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja, (iii) to describe the personalities which give positive and negative effect to students’ learning motivation. The researcher employed qualitative method. The subjects of this research were the lecturers and students at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja. The data of this research was collected by employing recording, observation and interview. The obtained data was analyzed in three major phases are; reduction, displaying, conclusion/ drawing verification. The result of the research revealed that (1) The lecturers’ personalities of the lecturers in teaching English at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja are; extrovert, sensing, thinking, feeling and judging. (2) The lecturers’ personalities affect students’ learning motivation in studying English at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI are extrovert, sensing, thinking, feeling and judging that gave positive and negative effect on students’ learning motivation. (3) The lecturers’ personalities have the positive and negative effect on students’ learning motivation.

Abstract

The English Teachers’ Perception toward the Implementation of Educational Unit Level Curriculum (KTSP) and 2013 curriculum at Junior High Schools in Tana Toraja Regency. The objective of the research is to find out the English teachers’ perseption toward the implementation of Educational Unit Level Curriculum and 2013 curriculum at junior high schools in Tana Toraja Regency that at the end can be useful information for educational participant.In this research, researcher used the qualitative descriptive method, to describe the English teachers’ perception toward the implementation of Educational Unit Level Curriculum and 2013 curriculum at Junior High Schools in Tana Toraja Regency.The researcher used the procedure of collecting data as follow: the researcer record the interview result and taking note from the interview , obsevation, documentation. The result of this research, generally every teachers has their own understanding toward both curriculum based on their knowladge do they have same even different perception toward both of these curriculum. In concluded, most teacher has good perception toward 2013 curriculum concept and teaching process but prefer KTSPs’ assessment technical the better.

Abstract

This research aims are to find out the types and the functions of speech acts those are used by the lectures in teaching English and to describe the students’ perception toward the use of speech acts by the lecturers in lecturing process. This research employed qualitative method. The subjects of this research were the lecturers and the students at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja. The result of the research revealed that (1) the types of speech acts used by the lecturers in teaching English at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja are assertives (assertive, affirmative and informative), directives (asking question, suggest, command and request), commisives (offer and promise), declaratives (declare) and expressives (feeling expression, greeting, parting, thanking, and praising) and those are expressed directly and indirectly, (2) the functions of the speech acts used by the lecturers in teaching English at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja are statement, asking question, command and request, (3) the students prefer the lecturers expressed their utterances directly because it is easy for them to grasp the meaning of the utterances and respond the lecturers’ utterances. The students also prefer the lecturers mixtheir language and using body language or gesture to convey the materials in the lecturing process. The students were responded the lecturers’ utterance in verbal, nonverbal and both of them. According to the students, the lecturers’ utterances can help the students to improve their language competence, as a motivation for the students, can increase their vocabulary to implement in their communication, help them to imitate and practice the way in pronouncethe words correctly.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to find out the effects of jigsaw technique on students’ ability in writing the paragraph elements at the fourth semester students of UKI-Toraja, (2) to find out whether the students are interested in the teaching of paragraph elements using jigsaw technique. This research employed cluster random sampling technique. It used two groups, one received treatment using Jigsaw Technique and the other group received the conventional way from the Lecturer who taught writing two in that semester. The subjects of this research were two classes, class B (22) as experimental group and class C (22) as control group. The data of this research was collected through writing test and questionnaire. The results of the research revealed that (1) using Jigsaw Technique affects the ability of the fourth semester students of UKIToraja in writing the elements of a good paragraph. (2) The interest of class B as experimental group of the fourth semester students of UKI-Toraja in writing the elements of a good paragraph showed a great positive.

Abstract

Tourists’ Perception toward the Service Quality of Tourist Information Center in Toraja. Thesis. English Department. Teachers Training and Education Faculty. Christian University of Indonesia Toraja. The aim of this research is to know the level of tourists perception toward the servicequality of tourist information center (TIC) in Toraja.This research was conducted in Toraja. The data sources were primary source and secondary source. The writer used snowball technique to choose the sample. The data was analysed by using quantitative method. Library research and field reasearch were used to collect the data. In the field research, data was collected by using questionnaries distributed to the tourists who were trying the product in Tourist Information Center in Toraja. Based on the data analysed, shown that out of 20 variables, there are 9 variables that makes tourist felt very satisfied. There are 7 variable exist on the level satisfied and there are 4 variables in the level satisfied enough.The result of this research is the level of tourists ‘ perception toward the service quality of tourist information center in Toraja is generally satisfied.

Abstract

The research aims at finding out (1) the kind of the Figurative Languages used by the lecturers (2) the ways of using Figurative Languages by the lectures (3) the reasons of using Figurative Languages by the lectures, and (4) the students’ perceptions toward the use of Figurative Languages by the lecturers. The researcher in this study employed the qualitative research design. The subjects of this research were Lecturers and students at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja. The results of the research revealed that (1) the kinds of the Figurative Languages used by the lecturers are: Simile, metaphor, Personification, Rhetoric, Litotes, Paradox, Metonymy, Hyperbole, Repetition, (2) The ways of Using Figurative Languages by the lecturers are by making comparative, contradictive, correlative and repetitive statements that related to students’ life, culture and habit with the material in teaching English, (3) The reasons of using Figurative Languages are: Introducing language and culture, as a feedback to improve students’ understanding on the lessons, to help students’ understanding the lessons, to motivate students in learning process, enhancing the language (language style), and to train students’ critical thinking, and (4) The students’ perceptions toward the use of Figurative Language are: in association the material with the real world the students easily absorbed it because it was closer with their environment. The students who did not like and understand it because they needed the lecturers explained it directly the intended point.

Abstract

Since the languages of the world come in contact, the society will experience something that called language contact and all of language phenomenon. Phenomenon that might be happening as the result of language contact is bilingualism. Bilingualism not only occurs in society but it also occurs in children language. When the bilingual children come in contact, there is bound to be a problem like interference which is a sociolinguistic phenomenon. This research focuses on language interference in bilingual elementary students by means of finding the types of interference and Factors Causing Occurrence of Interference. The findings proved that syntactic and semantic interference are types of interference that commonly occur in elementary students. Insufficient vocabulary receiver, The disappearance of words that are rarely used, The prestige of the source language and the language style, Entrainment habits in the mother tongue, and The user can not use the second language as good as first language are the factors causing the interference.

Abstract

Need Analysis is very important before developing instructional materials for ESP. This research is aim 1) To explore the learning needs of English speaking skills for the nursing students. 2) To investigate the language needs of English speaking skills for the nursing students And 3) To develop an instructional material to meet the needs of English speaking skills for the nursing students in Toraja based on ADDIEstages.This research worked out Research and Development (R & D) with ADDIE (analysis-design-develop-implement-evaluate) approach. In analysis, the students’ needs obtained by employed questionnaires of 60 nursing students and 5 lecturers in Toraja, Indonesia and 14 nurses who have worked in hospital for English speaking community. Design and develop instructional material for nursing students based on Need Analysis. Instructional material developed by involving experts and the small group students at another Nursing Collage by using checklist and analyzed in quantitative method.The result shown that 1) learning needs cover language skills, and learning preferences in terms of activities and method. In language skills, writing, listeningspeaking and writing are recognized to be more suitable skills. In learning preferences; working in out of the class work or interaction with native speaker, demonstration or debate, and working large group work are needed in learning English than others. 2) language needs deal with language the important of English and English in the workplace. The important of English; for study and looking for the job are more preferred than others. English for workplace covers the situation in hospital where English used commonly. It is stated that situation such as giving advice, explaining laboratory test, and administering medication commonly use English. 3) English material developed based on needs analysis throughout ADDIE stage.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the error analysis by using translation test. This technique used in translating test which I focused on the analysis of the students’ error production in translating. This research formulates four objectives: 1.To find out the types of errors that the students make in translating sentences from Indonesian into English 2.To find out the most frequent errors made by the students of UKI Toraja 3. To find out the differences in number of grammatical errors made the students of UKI Toraja. The method used was descriptive method. The population of this research was the students of UKI Toraja academic year 2014/2015. The fourth semester students consist of 270 as population in this research. There were 30 students as sample in this research was taken from 270 students. The sixth semester students consisted of 270 students as a population in this research and there were30 students as sample of this research was taken from 270 students. It was taken by using cluster random sampling. Data and analysis of this research are the students’ translation from Indonesian text into English text.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out whether the use dictation through instructional device can improve students’ English listening achievement. This research employs quasiexperimental method which consists of two groups namely experimental and control group. Each group consists of 32 students. The sample is chosen by applying cluster random sampling technique. The instruments of this research are listening test and questionnaire.The data of this research is collected through pre-test and post-test. Pre-test is applied to find out the students’ ability before and after treatment. In conducted of this research, the researcher applied dictation as an instructional device. The result of data analysis on pretest and post-test shows that T-test result is 13.03 and T-table is 2.00 which indicated the students’ improvement. Based on the result of research, it can be assumed that the use of dictation can improve students’ listening achievement.
