Retorik: Jurnal Ilmu Humaniora was founded in 2001 with the aim of seeking a new scientific ethos in the humanities with an interdisciplinary, political, and textual spirit. It was, and still remains, the aspiration of Retorik to foster humanities research with a scientific ethos capable of responding to the needs of the Indonesian society that continues to strive to become more democratic, just, and pluralistic in the aftermath of long authoritarian rule, under social, economic, and political conditions still characterized by inequality. In its interdisciplinary spirit, Retorik has drawn insights from an array of disciplines, most notably, political economy, language (including semiotics), and psychoanalysis, to that end. As various managerial requirements stifle the passion for academic and intellectual life, while simultaneously in the broader Indonesian society, the ideals of Reformation are frustrated by political and economic oligarchy that continues to exist with impunity, Retorik affirms the need to defend a scientific ethos at present, for the future. In light of its aims, Retorik promotes original research that makes advances in the following areas: 1. Historically-informed studies that engage with the conditions, contexts, and relations of power within which the humanities were born, and with which the humanities are entwined. 2. Dialogues with various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, including history, sociology, psychology, and anthropology. 3. Interdisciplinary research pertaining to critical pedagogy, religious and cultural studies, art studies, and new social movements. 4. Experimentation with new forms of knowledge that foster the formation of a more democratic, just, and plural society. 5. Studies that are sensitive to the vital role of both technology and art in contemporary society and seek to understand the ways in which art, technology, and economy together contribute to the formation of contemporary cultures and societies.

Abstract

In order to unite the Manggarai people in West Kalimantan, the Manggarai community leaders on behalf of the “Manggarai people” invited all Manggarai people to discuss the Penti ritual. The meeting resulted in an agreement to hold the Penti ritual. They received support from the Dayak Mualang community, so that the ritual could be carried out. This study describes the similarities and differences of the Penti rituals practiced in Flores and in West Kalimantan. The Penti ritual is held as a form of gratitude for the Manggarai people to God (Mori Keraeng) and their ancestors for their success abroad. The methodology used in this study is the ethnographic imagination methodology introduced by Paul Willis. Concepts used in the analysis of this study are the concepts of crossing and dwelling from Thomas A. Tweed and of liminality and communitas from Victor Turner. This study shows that the Penti ritual practiced by Manggarai people living outside their West Kalimantan hometowns contains important aspects, namely giving thanks to Mori Keraeng (God) and ancestors, fostering family relationships, and introducing the ritual to the younger generation of Manggarai in West Kalimantan.

Abstract

This study is intended to: (1) become aware of forms of celebrities’ rhetorical (im)morality which are constructed as (floating) signifiers in infotainment; (2) understand and interpret the political media minutely based on communication technology of virtual reality and/or real virtuality that is produced by forms of celebrities’ rhetorical (im)morality in infotainment; (3) reconstruct and disseminate the understanding and action of cultural paradigms based on the results of re-examination of reality and / or infotainment virtuality which inspired the idea of celebrity (im)morality. The main contribution of this study is to offer a perspective that attempts to understand, interpret, and become aware of infotainment shows through Baudrillard’s notion of simulation. This study attempts to describe the reality as that which had been created through the infotainment show by its celebrity’s rhetorical (im)morality and how ironic an impact it has in our society.

Abstract

Critical psychology and cultural-historical psychology are two approaches emerging as critiques to mainstream psychology that is often perceived to be hedonistic and individualistic. Adopting the spirit of critical psychology and cultural-historical psychology that strive to break the grips of mainstream psychology as well as absorbing the inspiration from Thomas Teo’s psychological humanities, Svend Brinkmann’s cultural psychology, Richard Johnson’s cultural circuit, and Stuart Hall’s cultural studies, as a critical review this article proposes an approach coined as psikologi berhampiran budaya (culturally-turned psychology) based on the socio-cultural realities of the present-day Indonesian society. Psikologi berhampiran budaya offers four models of psychological research in the production of knowledge on both the subject and the society of the present-day Indonesia. The application of the four models in such culturally turned production of knowledge is expected to simultaneously and serendipitously produce a specifically Indonesian psychology.

Abstract

Abstract

In Indonesia, the emergence of indigenous revivalism (or adat revivalism) is equated with unequal treatment at the local level, such as the seizure of adat lands to be converted into national development concessions. The conversion of “negeri adat” (indigenous villages) in Ambon, which is the main locus of this study, represents an instance of this. Indigenous revivalism intends to fight for indigenous values and regain equality that was neglected during the New Order Regime. However, unfortunately, it has become rooted in the discourse of power. This indigenous euphoria in the Reformasi era did not answer the challenge of indigenous values, but instead got caught up in local political interests by bureaucratizing, managerializing, and/or administering indigenous values. The consequence is ethnic projection. The discourse of indigenous revival has turned into a discourse of ethnic identity revival. In that context, especially regarding the revival of indigenous discourse in Ambon, I would like to discuss three main issues, namely: genealogy, power relations, and subjectivity. The discussion of the third issue will utilize Michel Foucault’s critical discourse analysis method.
