Abstract

The role of women in development up to now has not been maximally played although reformation era has opened thespace for women to actively participate.Related to pilkada (local election), women empowerment should be considered as an interesting andimportant issue for campaign. However, based on the cases elaborated in this research, most candidates did not take into account womenempowerment programs as political communication strategy in campaign. There are two reasons which can logically explain thisphenomenon; first, women empowerment issue was not considered as important as other issues which can directly answer the crucial socialproblems such as poverty alleviation, providing job opportunities for unemployment or dealing with expensive fee for education so that noteffective to attract the voters. Second, there was an assumption that sex does not have significant relation with political choice of voters. Itmeans female voters do not always vote for female candidates or candidates focusing on women empowerment programs. Finally, issuesrelated to women role improvement were not much included in campaign materials of either male or female candidates to catch theattention of voters.

Abstract

One of global issue that attracted our attention nowadays is gender issue. This gender issue has its momentum from manydiscourses at seminars, locally or international. The thriving of gender inequality, that produced injustice and even violence to women,basically is a social and culture construct that built from complex process. Abstract

There are various interpretations from some exegetes of the word darajah in verse 228 of al-Baqarah, that “a man has adarajah (superiority) to a woman.” Some of the interpretations of the word darajah according to mufassirs are physical, intelectual,psychological, leadership, material, and divorce. Although the verse contextually is about divorce but limited to the right of a husband toreturn (rujû’) to his wife in the ‘iddah period. Thus, the word darajah in this verse is an explanation to the previous sentences, so this wordhas to be understood in this context

Abstract

Nh. Dini has been regarded as the pioneer in feminism, as the themes of her works convey her opinions about women’sissue in a society. Although she is likely to take side in her novels and often stands against social conventions and norms, she has shownappreciation toward the Javanese traditional cultural values, cultural values of the priyayi in her memoirs. This research has attempted toshow the way Nh. Dini draws a line between two contrary aspects, the cultural values of the priyayi and the women’s perspectives dan hasproven that basically Nh. Dini respects and accepts the values of priyayi, instead of exposing it as patriarchal system. What has become anissue for Nh. Dini is that the system has discriminated the implementation of the values of priyayi against women. By showing her faith in thevalues of priyayi and at the same time demanding equality between men and women, Nh. Dini appears with a new image as a feministpriyayi or a feminist who has faith in the values of priyayi

Abstract

after the fall out of New Order and entering reformation era, women’s conventional organization face a reality of contestationgender construct from all side, include NGO and other groups like Islam conservative group that want total separation of women and mendomain. State cant become ‘patron’ to justify an idealized gender constructs. In this context, Aisyiyah have to option: first, still as organizationthat based on purely practical issues with the consequence labeled as ‘status quo’ and conservative organization. Second, Aisyiyah have toopen itself to reality of social injustice than conserve ‘idealization of serene family’. Third, Aisyiyah have thrown away administrative routinethat depleted much energy.
