Abstract

Understanding the function of socially and culturally aspects play an important role in language learning. People will use a different language in a different context and situation. They will find out with whom, where, when, and in what stages they are talking. Therefore, the context cannot be separated to comprehend an utterance. According to Yule (1996) states that context is the situation surrounding the production of utterance. Furthermore, Leech (1983: 13) in Citraresmana (2015) states that “context is any background of knowledge assumed to be shared by speaker and hearer which contributes to the interpretation of what speaker means by given utterance.” Therefore, this present paper is aimed to find out the expressive illocutionary acts in newspapers from Jakarta Globe and the Jakarta Post about the current issue of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s son which is Agus Yudhoyono who decided to take part in Jakarta gubernatorial election. The newspaper from Jakarta Globe entitled “There's Logic behind Sacrificing Agus Yudhoyono’s Military Career: Former House Speaker” which published on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Besides, the newspaper from The Jakarta Post entitled “SBY’s son’s decision to enter politics regretted: TNI” which published on September 29, 2016. The research objectives are to find the types of expressive illocutionary acts that used in the utterance and to find the similarities of expressive illocutionary acts in both newspaper. Further, this research employs a qualitative approach as suggested by Creswell (2014) and find 14 utterances as the data. The finding of the research showed that there were two types of expressive illocutionary acts that found in the article, protesting and praising. Moreover, both types of the illocutionary acts are found in Jakarta Globe and Jakarta Post

Abstract

Students in the Business Administration Study Program in LPKIA Bandung must do their final projects as one of the requirements before graduating from the D-3 program. This final project is called minor thesis and is written in the Indonesian language. It is a custom practice that the titles and abstracts of the minor thesis be written in both Indonesian and English languages. As the students mostly have limitation in their capability to write in English, many of them just translate the titles and abstracts, for example by using the Google’s translation services. Hence, there is a great possibility the translation will be incorrect; some words or expressions may not be translated correctly to conduct the originally intended meanings of the authors. Additionally, it sometimes happens that students just misperceive the meanings of certain words, for instance, the Indonesian word ‘pengelolaan’ may simply be used and interpreted as ‘management’ while students may actually want to discuss about ‘penanganan’ or ‘handling’ of a certain task or procedure. This study uses the descriptive analysis method to unveil common mistakes made by students when translating their minor thesis’ titles from Indonesian to English, to discuss and offer better English choices of words for their translation, and to provide a reference so that students in the future can avoid similar mistakes when they write their minor thesis’ titles in English

Abstract

This research aimed to find out what types of category shifts were used in noun phrases and to find out quality assessments in the novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the noun phrases of category shift used in the novel. Data collection techniques used reading the novels, identifying the noun phrase found in both novels, finding the meaning of the words and phrases, and classifying them. Data analysis techniques used data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that 102 data of category shifts were found in this research. There were 47 data for structure shift as the highest frequency and 6 data for class shift as the lowest frequency. Unit shifts found in this research were 38 data, and intra-system shifts occurred with 11 data. In the quality assessment of the category shift aspects, there were 78 data (76,5%) categorized as accurate. 20 data (19,65%) were less accurate, and 4 data (3,9%) were inaccurate. Moreover, in the acceptable aspect, the researcher found 92 data (90,2%) were acceptable, 9 data (8,8%) were less acceptable, and 1 data (0,98%) was unacceptable. The last aspect was readable; 90 data (88,2%) were readable, 9 data (8,8%) were less readable, and 3 data (2,9% ) were not readable. The conclusion of this research was the highest frequency of category shift was structure shift, and the lowest frequency was class shift. For quality assessment, the acceptable translation gained the biggest frequency, while the unacceptable got the lowest frequency in this research.

Abstract

Some teachers have always been encountering difficulties in writing an assessment especially a formative assessment. It is apparent that assessment is necessary to measure the achievement of learning objectives in teaching and learning to meet today's needs. This study aims to scrutinize the current books of question bank products as a benchmarking and attempt later on to design a preliminary digitalized question bank form to help teachers conduct formative assessments. The study uses research and development model and qualitative approach. It applied three phases of Borg & Gall's theory: research and information gathering, planning, and preliminary product development. Documentary data collection techniques are used to identify the characteristics and limitations of the question bank. A critical literature review and qualitative item analysis were used to analyse the data. Twenty-six question bank indicators were identified from a review of related literature. Twenty-six indicators are used to investigate weaknesses in current question bank products. Ten shortcomings were identified in both products meanwhile the second product has fewer defects than the first. The preliminary form of the digitalized question bank was designed by adapting existing products and overcoming their shortcomings. Forty entries were written and displayed in a test. The developed items are characterized to be more relevant to higher-level thinking which is analysis level cognitive domain about 48%. In addition 52.5% of the developed items are identified as medium difficulty.

Abstract

This study is entitled "Felicity Conditions in Speech Acts from the "KNIVES OUT" Movie: A Pragmatic Study". The research method used is descriptive qualitative because this research aims to classify, explain and summarize an utterance that appears in a film. The source of the data taken is the utterances that appear in the transcript of the film Knives Out in 2019. Based on the analysis that has been carried out, a total of 45 data types of speech acts have been obtained that consisting in directive action 24 data appear in the film consisting of ordering, commanding, questioning, and requesting forms of speech (53.4%); 8 assertive action data consisting of stating, affirming, asserting (20%); then in commissive action found 7 data consisting of suggest, promise, warn, confirm, offer, and intend (15.5%); and finally, 5 data were found with expressive actions (11.1%) consisting of greeting, condolence, apologies, and thanking; However, in this study, there were no declarations made during the film (0%). Apart from that, the data sources that have been analyzed based on speech acts have fulfilled the conditions of felicity, including the preparatory condition, which contains 19 data (42.3%), Essential Condition 15 data (33.3%), Sincerity Condition 10 (22 .2%), and Propositional Content Condition as much as 1 data (2.2%). From these two discussions, the utterances in the directive action dominate more than the other actions, and the preparatory condition dominates the feeling condition

Abstract

This study examines the employability of graduates from the AB English Language Studies program at Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges (CSPC) in the Philippines, with a specific emphasis on the 2022 batch. This study examines the correlation between the educational background of graduates and their career outcomes, evaluates the program's influence on the academic and professional development of individuals, and assesses the pertinence of the curriculum. The study used a mixed-methods research methodology, incorporating both surveys and interviews, to thoroughly comprehend the graduates' experiences and perceptions. The results indicate a significant correlation between the AB English program and the employment outcomes of its alumni, since a majority of them reported securing jobs that are closely aligned with their educational background. Graduates also recognize the program's favorable impact on academic, communicative, and professional advancement. The curriculum is considered comprehensive and pertinent, with high levels of student satisfaction

Abstract

Western perspective dominantly sees the Middle East in negative stereotypes. Many ways from many backgrounds start to criticize this perspective, including comedians utilizing comedy narration. This research aims at discovering how comedian represents Middle East and how the response manifests commenter’s attitude, applying descriptive qualitative research as a logical consequence that the data are in forms of stand-up performance transcription uploaded to YouTube and its sample comments from its comment column. Process of identifying Middle East representation and commenter’s attitude respectively utilizes Halliday’s transitivity and Martin & White’s appraisal system narrowed to attitude subsystem. The research results conclusions as follow. First, in terms of representation, the comedy narration provides an alternative platform to positively represent the Middle East, while second, commenter’s responses in attitude perspective mostly support the positive representation by showing their positive affection within themselves, favorable judgment in entity perspective, and affirmative appreciation to the happening event. This research attempt to see stimulated attitude after a representation in a specific social issue appears, while other researches documented in this writing integrate both theories at the same hierarchy. The relation varies in perspective of the audience stimulated by the discourse and who affirmatively experienced the discourse. At this point, comedy may have potency as a platform to pleasantly criticize sensitive issues

Abstract

The use of digital technology and the internet has changed how language education works. It gives learners many tools to get better at languages. Teachers and researchers need to understand what online language resources are available to help learners efficiently. This research's main goal is to look into the online resources that students use to learn English and see what students think about them. The data we collected shows that most students like using Language Learning Websites (LLW) to learn English. This shows that interactive websites are important for teaching languages in modern times. The finding that Language Learning Websites are the preferred choice among students aligns with the current trend of a diverse range of LLWs available. Dealing with the students’ perception, the findings shows that the students generally have a positive view of online resources for learning English. However, there are still some challenges to work on to make these online platforms better. Researchers and educators need to keep up with these changes to help language learners in the digital age
