Abstract

Religious violence is a term that covers phenomena where religion, in its  diversity, is either the subject or object of violent behaviour. Religious violence is, specifically, violence that is motivated by or in reaction to religious precepts, texts, or doctrines. Islam has been associated with violence in a variety of contexts, including Jihads (holy wars), violent acts by Muslims against perceived enemies of Islam, violence against women ostensibly supported by Islam's tenets, references to violence in the Qur'an, and acts of terrorism motivated and/or justified by Islam. Muslims, including clerics and leaders have used Islamic ideas, concepts, texts, and themes to justify violence. One among popular religious violence in Islamic History is mihnah (inquisition). To socialize Mu’tazilah teaching, Al-Ma’mun and his successors managed Mihnah or inquisition, that is the dispersion of this belief and teachings forcefully and even violently. As the ruler, Al Ma’mun thought that it was his duty to maintain the purity of the religion and the  truth enforcement in the state community. As described in this article, Mihna is a kind of intellectual violence conducted by Mu’tazilah and Al-Ma’mun as a kind of coalition between religion and politics.

Abstract

Pancasila serves as the state philosophy, way of life, and national ideology in Indonesia. Once the Pancasila as the nation ideology is functionally applied, the balanced life of the nation is present. In reality, Pancasila is abused and politized in a destructive interest to justify immoral actions. This affected to the people misery, as found in Lapindo case in Sidoarjo and most Indonesian workers abroad. In this scene, Pancasila should be redefined pointing the critical-philosophical mode of reflection. This could be stimulated to gain creative-historical potency constructing Indonesia better.

Abstract

It is important to understand Jean Paul Sartre’s mode of dualism in order to comprehend Sartre’s notion on humanbeings, freedom and conflict. As a man of ontological basis, Sartre put himself as a radical dualist in that it develops a number of ideas such as the meaning of objective and subjective reality, human existence and life. Those thoughts truly reveal the dark side of being in that it exemplifies the conflict in inter-human relationship context. Sartre discusses the objective meaning (en-soi) or “being-in-self”. For Sartre, en-soi is subject matter or the object of understanding that goes beyond human mind or the being of unconscious self. Unlike pour-soi(foritself) that only awares of itself, it denotes the dual characteristics of human that both awares of subject and the inner self. Human serves both as subject and object. Sartre argues that ‘Pour-soi’ underlining the notion of ‘the nihilation” of Being-in-itself’. In a concise word, “man presents himself…as a being that causes of ‘the nihilation’ of ‘Being in-itself” triggered freedom and conflict.

Abstract

The convergence of the two theories between non-Marxist structuralist conflict theory and Talcott Parsons’ functionalism structuralist one contributes to an alternative model of social political theory used as conflict resolution and crime in Indonesia. The mentioned theories could not be optimally applied in terms of political government system in Indonesia.Without the convergence of the two political theories, it is urgent to seek for a particular political theory accommodated the pluralistic society in Indonesian condition. In this scene, the government should construct reconciliation strategy. Reconciliation is present if only the government appreciatively opens a discussion type of initiative in decision making. It leads to accommodate the peaceful type of approach to conflicts. It is urgent, in this regard, to solve the issues of economy, education, welfare, integration, and tribes conflicts. If the government has a good will, it bore to strong possibility in that conflicts and violence could be clearly anticipated in an immediate resolution.

Abstract

In a decade of post-reformation era, the religious life has been nuanced  with the vast existence of radical-fundamental movements that underscore the non-compromised mode of action and tend to legalize violence pursuing their aims in Indonesia. At the same time, it is urgent to note the release of The Thematic Exegesis (Tafsir) of Al-Qur’an: The Inter-religious Relationship as the implementation of RPJMN 2004-2009 by the Ministry of Religious affairs the Republic of Indonesia. The issue of the exegesis serves as the benchmark of various Tafsir of either in a too-literal or a too-liberal one appeared in Indonesia. The issue is then the relationship between the condition of religious life in Indonesia and The Thematic Exegesis of AlQur’an: The Inter-religious Relationship as the government type of Tafsir. This research uses a critical discourse analysis in that it implements Teun A. van Dijk’s model of discourse analysis focused on three dimensional constructions of discourse: text, social cognition, and social context. To sum up, the concepts of religious tolerance offered in the exegesis are the principles of religious freedom, the tolerance of religious other, and the harmonious principle. Those three concepts of religious tolerance are a government version as it is imbued in the Exegesis produced by the government. This underlines the relationship of the Exegesis as a product of knowledge and power.

Abstract

It is interesting to look at the Head of Criminal Investigation statement of the Indonesian National Police Commissioner General Ito Sumardi (Kompas, 22/9/2010), which warns that the crime of terrorism is closely related to ideology. Sociologist Van Dijk (1993) states that ideology is basically a mental system that is exchanged, represented both in the level of discourse and action to achieve certain goals or desires in a groups (defined as the system of mental representations and processes of group members). Why (technology) Internet so powerful in spreading the message of terrorism? First, the interaction happens on internet can be done anywhere and anytime. Second, Internet users in Indonesia, which are increasingly growing in number, allow access to the site or content to be easily obtained terrorism. Third, Internet medium provides not only cheap but free access. Fourth, the Internet allows anyone to construct new identity. In fact it proves that the identities of individuals in cyber world are individuals who have two possibilities. It could be the same or different identities as in the real world. Furthermore, the individual does not only have one identity per se on the internet, they could have multiple identities as well as different  characteristics from each other. In addition, according to Gilmore (1996), those on the Internet nobody knows you at all, neither knows your race nor your sex. This is the opportunities that could be used by the perpetrators of terrorism to spread the ideology of terrorism and violence in the name of religion without having to worried their identity will be revealed.

Abstract

Abstract

Contemporary issues are present in the course of human civilization. In this  part, religion should take its participation and offer a solution to these human contemporary issues. Religion should play an immense role solving the existing conflicts, but not serve as the source of conflicts. It is significant, in this context, to underscore religion as a solution of liberating human from their conflicts. The populist type of religiosity is demanding. It does not refer to place religiosity in its plain aim, but serves it as a medium pursuing the welfare of life. It leads to pluralist-liberalist traits that aware the truth outside one’s religion, support respects and tolerance to others in terms of their religious expressions.

The phenomenon signifies the bold topic of human history, religion and violence. Applying the sociology of religion approach, this paper tries to explore how the contruction of human thought is present related to their views on religion, and how the position of religion in the context of war and violence in the lines of their history.
