Abstract

This study aims to find out how verbal communication and visual signs in the "Sì" Giorgio Armani Perfume Line Advertisement reflect the value of liberal feminism. In conducting the study, I used Danesi's theory of Signs in semiotics (2004). This study was done using a qualitative approach in which I transcribed both the song lyrics and the narration that appeared in the video. I also captured the scene of the video to analyze the visual sign aspects. For this study, I analyzed the visual sign through the actress's body language, facial expression, and the color that often appeared in the video advertisement. The data finds that the "Sì" by Giorgio Armani perfume line advertisement uses the concept of liberal feminism to appeal to a modern and empowered audience of women. By incorporating messages of individual choice, empowerment, and self-affirmation, the advertisement positions itself as a brand that supports and celebrates the values of liberal feminism.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of figurative language and the function of the figurative language used in Bo Burnham’s stand-up comedy titled “what.”. The writer conducted this study using the theory of types of figurative language and functions of figurative language by Harris (2018). The writer conducted the study using a qualitative approach method in which he collected and analyzed the data himself. Findings reveal that the figurative language used in "what." comprises simile, metaphor, personification, and allusion, serving to clarify content, provoke interest, and establish associations. This study also found that the types of figurative language used in stand-up comedy depends on the compatibility of the type with the comedic material and the timing and pacing of the performance. It is also found that multiple types of figurative language can appear in a single utterance as it adds layers and creates engagement. It is suggested that future studies consider other forms of humor or alternative theories of figurative language to further diversify and enrich the field.

Abstract

Knowing translation strategies allows the translator to select the best word choices when translating a text, which is especially important in entertainment media. The purpose of this research is to examine the translator's translation strategies used in translating the comic The Adventure of Tintin: Land of Black Gold into the comic Petualangan Tintin di Negeri Emas Hitam. Baker's (2018) eight translation strategies are used as the main theory of analysis in the study. The qualitative approach is used in this study's methodology. The writer examines each utterance and bubble in the book, excluding publisher information and mistakes or incorrect translations. According to the findings of this study, the translator only employs six of Baker's (2018) strategies. The loan word or loan word plus explanation, as well as translation by illustration, are not used in the translation. According to the findings of the study, translation by cultural substitution is the most used method to translate words that are unfamiliar to Indonesian readers. Following translation by omission, the translator omitted some sentences and words that were not necessary to translate into Indonesian to meet the main ideas of the sentence.

Abstract

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a disease in which people experience multiple separate personalities and function independently of one another and autonomously from one another. DID is a rare disease found in only 1.5% of people worldwide, so I want to find out what the cause of people having DID and how they recover from DID. The method that I will use is to create a creative work in the form of a novel. The story will involve family dysfunction and post-traumatic avoidance as the causes of DID and three approaches, which are safety and stability, work on traumatic memories, and re-integration into life, to weaken the DID effects. Narrative-wise, this creative fiction novel is set in 2022's America, where this story will highlight Ethan's daily life as the person that has DID, which creates a new identity, Elliot. The finding is that Ethan's DID effect cannot be cured, but it can be recovered with the help of Maydeline using the three approaches of DID treatment.

Abstract

When a teenager accidentally commits a killing in self-defense, such an experience will have a tremendous effect on her psychological condition. From the accidental killing, she suffers from a post-traumatic stress disorder, which negatively affects her mental health. She will then use a variety of defense mechanisms to cope. This work applies the theory of traumatic stress, post-traumatic stress disorder, and defense mechanisms. This creative thesis is written in the form of a novel to showcase the effects of a self-defense killing on a person’s psyche, and how she uses defense mechanisms to deal with the effects. The novel shows how Melanie, the main character, suffers from the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, such as strong emotions, overreaction, disturbed sleeping patterns, withdrawal from family and friends, depression, pessimistic outlook on life, and feelings of hopelessness, and she utilizes avoidance, acting out, repression and denial as defense mechanisms to deal with the stress.
