Abstract

This paper presents five children’s picture book stories designed for children aged six to eight to discuss the bullying issue in children, particularly highlighting how the act of bullying happens to children as well as how they deal with the issue. Dorte Marie Søndergaard‘s Process of Bullying in Children and Lazarus and Folkman’s Problem-Focused Coping are used as the theoretical framework. From the first to the fifth story, the main characters–Kim, Ruby, Fillo, Lora, Roo–have either different appearances or behaviors that elicit the bullies to point out their differences and bring them into their conversation which later turns into more serious bullying, such as blatant verbal or physical bullying. To successfully overcome this problem, each of the main characters will use one of a few coping mechanisms which are divided into confrontative coping, planful-problem solving, and social-seeking support.

This study was conducted to analyze the code-mixing types used by Iman Usman as a young adulthood resource person and Faisal Basri as a middle adulthood resource person in Gita Wirjawan’s Endgame, as well as the similarities and differences between the code mixing types used by both respondents. The writers used the theory of code-mixing types by Muysken (2000) and employed a qualitative approach. The findings of this study revealed that both used all the code-mixing types: insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Content words were also widely found and both Iman Usman and Faisal Basri repeatedly applied the code-mixing with possessed content word (nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs). Moreover, age factor did really affect Iman Usman and Faisal Basri when using code-mixing in their conversation with Gita Wirjawan. Iman Usman used code mixing more often than Faisal Basri.

Abstract

Interactional styles not only reflect on the gender of the speaker but also the “dominant attitudes” that they produce. In this study, the writer focuses on analyzing a podcast video on a social media platform, which is Raymond Chin in the Close the Door podcast Miskin Bukan Privilege (Being Poor is not a Privilege) on YouTube. This study is done by the writer to find the features of interactional styles used by Raymond Chin as a guest in the Close the Door podcast Miskin Bukan Privilege on YouTube. Additionally, the writer identifies the usage of interactional style that Raymond utilizes in the podcast regarding the bogus investments. In managing this study, the writer uses the theory of interactional styles by Holmes (2006). Moreover, this study uses a qualitative approach. As a result, this study shows that Raymond uses both feminine and masculine interactional styles in the Close the Door podcast Miskin Bukan Privilege. In short, Raymond Chin dominantly uses a feminine interactional style because he is trying to cover up what really happened regarding bogus investments. Besides that, Raymond Chin uses masculine when the host of the podcast succeeds in provoking him to answer the questions regarding the bogus investments.

Abstract

This paper aims to provide an analysis into the specific type of poisonous parenting style Aleida Diaz has in Orange is the New Black, the reason behind her adoption of such poisonous parenting styles and the resulting consequences on herself. In analyzing Aleida’s parenting, we use Dunham & Dermer’s theory of poisonous parenting styles, specifically the Dismissive and Contemptuous Parent, combined with Baumrind’s Uninvolved or Neglectful Parenting Style that includes consequences of such parenting styles. In addition, we also use Mother-Daughter Relationship theory to understand the underlying reason behind Aleida’s adoption of these poisonous parenting styles. We divide the analysis into three parts. In the first part, we analyze what kind of mother Aleida is. In the second part, we analyze why she adopts such parenting styles. In the third part, we analyze what consequences she experiences as a result of her poisonous parenting styles. Ultimately, the finding will reveal that there is a vicious cycle of these poisonous parenting styles that turns out to be difficult to break from one generation to the next.

Abstract

This qualitative research was done to find the types of impoliteness strategies used by the white characters in the Hidden Figures movie (Al Harisson, Paul Stafford, Vivian Mitchell, and Ruth), and how the recipient of impoliteness, Katherine Johnson (a black character), responded to it. The main theory used is Culpeper's (1996, 2003) impoliteness strategy and Bousfield’s (2008) responses to impoliteness. The findings revealed that not every impoliteness strategy was produced by the characters. The one strategy that was not produced is withhold politenessbecause there were no such silent scenes in the movie. Besides withhold politeness, every type of impoliteness strategy was produced in the Hidden Figures movie. In addition, Katherine Johnson produced two types of responses to Al Harisson and Paul Stafford: accepting face attack and countering face attack. While responding to Vivian Mitchell and Ruth, Katherine Johnson only produced one type of response: accepting face attack. In conclusion, in this research impoliteness strategies and the responses were used in the Hidden Figures movie. In addition, impoliteness could occur due to job status and race factor.

Abstract

This study examines politeness in addressing and requesting used by salespersons to customers at UMC E-commerce. This study used the first-order politeness theory by Watts (2003), supported by Indonesian (Javanese) politeness theories by Suseno (2003) and Kuntjara (2012). This qualitative study analyzed salespersons’ utterances in the conversations with their customers when delivering promotions. The findings showed that salespersons adhere to Indonesian (Javanese) politeness principles, namely respect and harmony. They employed various address terms, whether to address or as second-person pronouns, which showed politeness. In request, they showed politeness by using words or adverbs of possibility, apologies, asking for permission, and asking for help. Two possible reasons behind the use of politeness were the salespersons as the company representatives and the need to fulfill sales targets. However, for several reasons, some findings were not in accordance with Indonesian (Javanese) politeness principles. Overall, the findings indicated that politeness depends on cultural contexts.

Abstract

This thesis is about the idiom translation of the movie The Founder by John Lee Hancock. In this thesis, the writer analyzes the techniques and appropriateness of the idiom translation by using Molina and Albir (2002) and Larson's accuracy, clarity, and naturalness (1984) theory. The writer seeks to disclose the most common technique used for translating idioms and how to make a good-quality translation. This study was done using a qualitative approach. The data analysis showed that out of 18 techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002) only 5 were utilized by the translator and out of five techniques, the established equivalent was used the most. The data analysis also shows that among 20 idioms, 10 idioms are appropriately translated. The writer suggests that future studies could be conducted on other aspects of the subtitles of The Founder.

Abstract

Layangan Putus is a web series adapted from a novel by Drh. Eka Nur Prasetya. In this article, I am analyzing this series because there is a hidden gem in these five female characters, which shows their power to fight for their rights and happiness. For that, I am interested in analyzing their power and what consequences they receive. In my analysis, I use the girl power theory based on the descriptions by Zaslow (2017), Inness (2004), and Bettis & Addams (2005) on girl power, which is independent, smart, and assertive. I analyze the way these five female characters exercise their power by being independent, smart, and assertive. As the consequences of exercising their power, they experience positive and negative results. For the positive result, they get what they want in life such as individual freedom, and for the negative one, they have to sacrifice important things such as their feelings, and personal relationships. In conclusion, in exercising their power, they gain self-growth and self-discovery.

Abstract

This research examines politeness in two Endgame podcasts, focusing on Gita Wirjawan's request and the use of address terms with a minister and a non-government employee. The writer analyzes politeness expressed by Gita Wirjawan in two podcasts on his channel using First-Order Politeness by Watts (2003) and the Indonesian (Javanese) politeness principle by Suseno (2001) and Kuntjara (2009). A descriptive qualitative approach is employed in this study. The analysis shows that Gita often uses direct language for requests, utilizes the term 'you' to blur their distance. The findings show that Gita wanted to look neutral with someone who has the same rank and tended to appear to have a lower rank when he talks with someone with a higher rank. In conclusion, differences in rank influence how people communicate.

Abstract

Online dating applications are one of the results of the advancement of technology and communication in the digital culture. The use of online dating applications, however, is bringing negative effects such as Social Anxiety Disorder or SAD to the users. SAD is known as a mental health problem that is marked by a persistent fear of being humiliated by others. One of the psychological effects of SAD is developing avoidance behavior which is marked by avoiding any social situations. This screenplay aims to explore how online dating applications may cause SAD, and how SAD will affect a person’s mental health condition to the extent that it will influence their relationship with others. This work is using Social Anxiety Disorder theory to analyze the link of the cause and effect of SAD with the dating applications. In results, this screenplay presents a link between SAD and online dating applications as there is trauma of rejection for the users which triggers the appearance of SAD. Also, the development of avoidance behavior is shown when a person with SAD avoids the feared situations completely.
