Abstract

This study aims to discuss Mia’s psychopathic symptoms through the 18 items described in Psychopathy Checklist—Revised four-factor model. The purpose of this analysis is to discuss what psychopathic category Mia belongs to and to discuss why Mia, as a psychopathic person, commits suicide. The analysis shows that Mia’s psychopathic symptoms fit these factors, and through it, the score can be given to each item discussed in the analysis. Moreover, it also shows that one of the factors, which is the factor of lifestyle, affects the probability of a psychopath to commit suicide because of the impulsivity that a psychopath has. In the end, it can be concluded that Mia is a psychopathic person who can be categorized as an intermediate psychopath, and her suicidal act is affected by her past traumatic experience and her impulsivity.

Abstract

This paper is basically a study of depression. Through the study on Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted!, I intend to analyze the effects of cruel punishment in the mental hospital to Susanna Kaysen, the main character in the novel. In order to fulfill the goal of this thesis, I use psychological theory on depression to analyze the novel. Finally, I conclude that Susanna becomes more depressed after she enters the mental hospital and sees the cruel punishment in there. The cruel punishments can be classified into two groups. They are mental and physical torture. In the novel, Susanna experiences both of them that make her feel more depressed than before she enters the mental hospital. In other words, watching the cruel punishment or torture can make a healthy person becomes depressed and depressed person becomes more depressed. Therefore, a person should avoid watching anything cruel in the television, radio, newspaper, and society so that they will not get depressed or more depressed by it

Abstract

This study aims to prove that Sibyl System is the Panopticon and to analyze the causes of dystopia in Gen Urobuchi’s Psycho Pass. In Psycho Pass, Sibyl System is the governing system which possesses a resemblance to the Panopticon. It implies that Sibyl System may actually be a Panopticon; thus, we want to prove this using the theory of the Panopticon by Michel Foucault. Moreover, Sibyl System shows signs of being the cause of the dystopian society in Psycho Pass even though it was designed to create utopia. To find out more about this, we analyze each characteristic of the dystopian society and trace their causes to Sibyl System’s aspects. Through the analysis, by comparing Sibyl System’s aspects to six of the Panopticon’s aspects, it is found that Sibyl System is indeed a Panopticon, and these panoptic aspects with its loopholes are the causes of the dystopian society. In conclusion, a Panopticon such as Sibyl System, though designed with noble intentions, can have flaws that prove fatal in changing the society into a dystopian one

Abstract

Kevin Tierney is the male main character in Safe Haven who does spousal abuse toward his wife, Erin. The analysis is on what spousal abusive behavior is and what the effects of the spousal abuse are in Nicholas Spark’s Safe Haven. The concept of spousal abuse proposed by Tina de Benedictis, Ph. D. is applied to reveal the spousal abuse done by Kevin and its effects on his spouse, Erin. In this research, I discover that Kevin does spousal abuse toward Erin that categorized into seven which are physical abuse, sexual abuse, destruction of property, verbal abuse, economic abuse, social isolation, and psychological abuse. Furthermore, Kevin’s abusive behaviors cause several effects on Erin that are categorized into four which are physical effects, psychological effects, social effects, and economic effects.

Abstract

This study aims at showing the visual signs used to signify the concept of “Young, Different and Dangerous” in a magazine’s fashion spread. The visual signs are observed by using Dyer’s theory of human signs (1982) and the analysis is focused on the reading of visual signs at two orders of signification, the denotation and connotation. The findings show that the model’s appearance, manner, activity and setting of place are reflections of the magazine’s desired concepts, which suggested by the editor-in-chief. By understanding this, the visual images in fashion magazine, especially NYLON Indonesia, are constructed in such a way to reflect the magazine’s identity and to communicate the magazine’s branding as well

Abstract

This study is concerned with the Americanized exposure of Confucian filial piety expressed in one of Disney’s animated features, Mulan. I intend to analyze how Disney reframes the original concept of Confucian filial piety to meet the global understanding of Disney’s audience and how Disney’s fundamental motives affect Disney’s decision on combining Confucian filial piety with American values. In the analysis, I use three main theories, namely americanization, disneyfication, and cultural hybridity related to cultural imperialism.  In my analysis, I find that Disney reframes the original concept of Confucian filialness in a more Americanized manner, by injecting some classic American notions such as individualism and equality of opportunity in order to preserve Disney’s standardized formula. And yet, the most significant motive is Disney’s marketing purpose related to the acceptance of Disney’s audience and Disney’s reputation as a showbiz industry.

Abstract

One genre that has been growing rapidly in manga is yaoi, which sells romance between beautiful young boys and men.  In Aozora no Sunda Iro wa, I want to reveal how Sugiura takes female role in his same-sex romantic relationship and why Sugiura has dominant feminine features which leads to his feminine role.  I used gender role theory and attitudinal pathway gender schema theory.  I find out that Sugiura has female-like body-type.  He is neat, supportive, sensitive, innocent, weak, and submissive.  He is motherly and economically dependent.  In addition, Sugiura became feminine because of Fukada’s involvement in Sugiura’s childhood, his masculine value was rejected while he was encouraged to hold feminine value.  In conclusion, Sugiura is a feminine uke by showing feminine qualities in his persona code, emotion code, and action code which are resulted by Fukada’s involvement in his childhood

Abstract

In Changeling film, Collins as the female character experiences injustice. In this study, I want to reveal how the authorities abuse their power to Collins and the strategies that used by Collins to defeat the authorities’ power. I will use the concept of abuse by the powerful to the powerless by Adam M. Tomison and Joe Tucci and power relations by Michel Foucault. I find out that power is easily abused and not stable because one time, it is the authorities that have the power, but at the other time, it is individual who has more power. The police and the doctors abuse their power to Collins. I find out that Collins uses some strategy to defeat the authorities’ power. She is complying, gathering evidence, and getting allies. At first, she is powerless, but in the end, Collins can defeat the authorities’ power and become powerful.

Abstract

This paper deals with the battle of the minds in the case of John’s Multiple Personality Disorder in the movie Peacock. Through the battle of the minds between John and his alter personality Emma, I want to find out the cause, the process, and the result of the battle. To analyze the battle of the minds, I am using the theory of Multiple Personality Disorder. In my analysis, I find out that the battle of the minds is caused by the existance of the alter, the resolutions of the host, and the interference of the alter. It takes place with the attack of the alter and the defense of the host, and the result of the battle is the victory of the alter

Abstract

This thesis deals with the parental pressure and how it gives impacts toward children in 3 Idiots. This thesis uses the parental pressure concept by Medora M. Sletten and anxiety theory by Sigmund Freud. The aim of this study is to reveal that Farhan and Raju get two kinds of parental pressure, they are direct and indirect pressures. Later on, the impact of the pressure makes both characters experience anxiety, they are, reality anxiety and neurotic anxiety. Through this analysis, it can be concluded that Farhan and Raju get the pressure from their parents, and since both the main characters suppress their own ego, they suffer anxiety
