Abstract

Commercial is an advertising strategy to promote a product or service effectively through mass media. It is also attractive because it touches the audience’s emotion through its music, cinematography, and storytelling. However, commercial has hidden meaning and this meaning represents the brand as symbols which distinct itself and its users to other brands’. I analyze Apps We Can’t Live Without (2014) commercial as the text to show Apple encodes meaning and transmit it to the society. Using film language and Bourdieu’s cultural capital theory, the findings show that the symbols from the commercial bring into a conclusion that Apple as a brand is a symbolic capital, specifically cultural capital. The people who has the brand is considered to have higher position in its fields which are Apple and gadget communities.

Abstract

The character traits in Shinchan seem to be contrary to the structure of masculine and feminine traits. I am interested in discussing the feminine character traits that are adopted by the male characters and the masculine character traits that are adopted by the female characters in a patriarchal society in Japan. Under the patriarchal system, there are rigid segregation of gender roles and the expected feminine and masculine traits. The main purpose of this paper is that even though some of the male characters adopt the feminine character traits and the female characters adopt the masculine character traits, the gender roles Japanese patriarchal system remains unchanged

Abstract

This article concerns with Gru’s character development in Despicable Me. In this movie, Gru, the father of three daughters is described as a villain. However, later on Gru becomes a good man. In this article, I am interested in analyzing the reasons or factors why Gru’s character traits change and how his changing character traits effect him and others. In my analysis I examine the process of Gru’s changing character traits by using the theories of characterization and conflict. Beside those theories I also use the theory of personality to get a better understanding of the effect of his character development. The findings show that his three daughters’ love plays a role in changing his character. As a result, Gru becomes a good man and he is well accepted by others. Through Gru’s experiences, I conclude that it is very important that people should show their understanding to others and be mindful to others feeling. In this way, they can have a more meaningful life.
