ELITE: Journal of English Language and Literature is a periodic academic publication that serves as the appropriate link to exchange any worthwhile and marvelous ideas in the realm of English language and literature. ELITE was established for the purpose of reviving and perpetuating academic excellence for the sake of the common good. On the other hand, Elite, standing for English Language and Literature, is aimed at undertaking its primary mission to promote and advance English language and literature in the national and international scope. The managing editors and the editor-in-chief will gratefully receive any kinds of theoretical writings, ethnographic research findings, and any other kinds of publications with constructive ideas which are supposed to be able to rectify any socio-cultural problems in a broader sense and resolve any complicated problems in human and community development, as well as the textbook reviews and any other kinds of exploratory and explanatory research findings. The contents are not necessarily in conformity with the editors’ viewpoints. The texts are typed using the Microsoft Office Word application, selecting Times New Roman 12 font size with 1,5 line spacing. The whole documents are submitted in soft copy. The length of the article contains at least 3000 words or more, embodying the scientific principles. The abstract should be attached, containing no more than 250 words. The footnotes should be inserted at the bottom of the document with the appropriate cardinal numbers. The references are arranged in such a way that the authors are ordered alphabetically, in accordance with the sample references in this edition. ELITE is published biannually, in June and December.

Abstract

The aims of this research were: 1. to investigate more deeply about the fis phenomenon a child aged 3 year, 2. to fis phenomenon described in a 3-year-old child. The data of this research was taken Adelia Nur Febriyana from Jln. Jend A H Nasution. Lrg, Maleo. Kelurahan Kambu. Kota Kendari. Sulawesi Renggara. This study applied qualitative descriptive method. The techniques for collecting the data were observation, recording, and note. Based on the data analysis, the result show that Adelia Nur Febriyana had Fis Phenomenon. Where in pronounces the phoneme /R/ into /L/, the phoneme /S/ becomes /C/ or /T/ and sometimes removes the phoneme /k/ at the end of the word and the phoneme /h/ at the beginning of the word. The role of parents is very important in the development of children's language. Several factors that can affect a child's language development include family factors or the child's environment, in addition to supporting factors for children's language development, there are also inhibiting factors, namely the lack of perfect articulation tools so that they have obstacles but can be understood which have the same meaning and purpose. The research is still open for research on children's language acquisition, especially on further aspects of the fis phenomenon because there is still a lot that can be studied from children's language acquisition. Abstract

The Bad Seed movie tells the story of Emma, a little girl who has above-average intelligence, but her father, David, realizes that her 9-year-old daughter has a personality disorder. Her father found out her daughter, Emma has no empathy for fellow humans and even without hesitation kills other people who make her angry. This study intended to show antisocial personality disorder as reflected of Emma in The Bad Seed movie, directed by Rob Lowe. This study applies the theory of personality disorders by Theodore Millon. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. Data collection was carried out through four steps, such as watching, screenshots, note-taking, and identifying data. The results of this study indicate that the main character has antisocial personality disorder. The main character in The Bad Seed movie, shows five criteria for antisocial personality disorder is: swindler or liar, manipulative, aggressive and irritable, impulsive, and lack of empathy and lack of remorse.While the variant of antisocial personality disorder is reflected in the main character, namely the pure variant or the jealousy/envy.

Abstract

This research was conducted by researcher in order to determine the types of code mixing in ecko show song lyrics based on Muysken and Hoffman Theory. There are two research questions in this research. The first is “what kind of code mixing does Ecko Show use” and the second is “what is the reason Ecko Show uses code mixing” the objectives of this research are to find the types of code-mixing in Ecko Show song lyrics and to find out the reason of code mixing by using Muysken and Hoffman Theory. The researcher used descriptive qualitative as a research method. Sources of data in this research were taken from primary data, namely Ecko Show song lyrics. Data collection is done by watching videos, reading, checking lyric video scripts, making memos, underlining data, reviewing data, re-checking data, capturing, encoding, and reducing data. Data analysis is done by presenting the data, describing the data, interpreting the data, and concluding the data. Based on the findings and discussion, the writer concludes that there are three types of code mixing found in Ecko Show song lyrics: insertion, substitution and congruent lexicalization and the reasons: talking about certain topics, pride and repetition. and code mixing that is often used is insertion and the reason for talking about certain topics is the reason that is often used in this research.

Abstract

Language style and implicature meaning are two important aspects that are related in conversation, especially the conversation in Alice in Wonderland movie. In this research, the researcher found the characters’ utterances that contain language style and the relation to the implicature meaning behind their utterances. This research aims to analyze the type of language style used by the characters in Alice in Wonderland movie based on the Joos’ theory of language style (1967) and the relation between language style and the implicature meaning behind the character’s utterance in Alice in Wonderland movie based on the Yule theory of implicature (1996). The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method in this research. In this research, all of the characters in Alice in Wonderland movie are using the five types of language style which is frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style. The researcher also found that there is a relation between the language style that used by the characters in Alice in Wonderland and the implicature meaning in behind the characters’ utterances. By using the language style, Alice can use the proper language when talking to her interlocutor and also, by understanding the implicature meaning, Alice can understand the meaning behind their utterance so there is no misunderstanding between them.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to analyze politeness strategies and find out the religious message in Yusuf Estes' public lecture The Universal Message of Islam by using Brown and Levinson's theory. Brown and Levinson classified four strategies of politeness strategies namely; positive politeness, negative politeness, off record, and bald on record. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The data for this study were taken from utterances of Yusuf Estes in his public lecture “the universal message of Islam”. The data were collected from searching for the audiovisual of Yusuf Estes’ public lecture, downloading, watching, reading, classifying, selecting, and coding the data. Then, the religious message contained in the expression of Yusuf Estes can increase knowledge as well as a reminder about the life of a servant based on the Qur'an and Sunnah. Then, the religious message contained in the expression of Yusuf Estes can increase knowledge so that it leads the servant to live based on the Qur'an and Sunnah. Abstract

This research aimed to analyze altruism in the main character of The Happy Prince and Other Tales short stories collection used altruism in terms of empathy theory by Batson (2011). The objective of the research was to describe how altruism in terms of empathy was used in the short stories. The researcher used descriptive qualitative as the research method. The data source was short stories of The Happy Prince and Other Tales as the primary data. The technique of data was carried out by downloading, reading intensively, coding, and reducing the data. The technique of data analysis was carried out by presenting, describing, interpreting, and concluding research results. Based on the findings and discussion of this research, showed that altruism really existed and was applied by the main characters. The researcher found 14 data containing an aspect of altruism in terms of empathy concern, antecedents of empathy, and behavioral consequences. Empathy concern was a motivation that encourages altruism. Then, Antecedents of empathy concern were the second factor that drives altruism in the short stories. The last aspect was the behavioral consequences, the end of the consequences of altruism that occurred in short stories.
