Abstract

Introduction: Continuous Multi Stage Countercurrent Extraction Process (CMCE) propolis extract containing Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE) may inhibit the formation of lipid peroxidation. However, it is still unclear whether or not CMCE propolis is able to increase SOD activity and reduce acute hepatocytes damages induced by CCl4. Objective: To evaluate the influence of CMCE propolis extract administration in increasing the SOD activity and reducing the hepatocytes fibrosis of male Wistar rats induced with CCl4.Method: an experimental research with a post-test only control group design. Twenty eight male Wistar rats were divided into four groups. Group C-N was only induced with CCl4, while group CM-3, CM-7, and CM-14 were induced with CCl4 and received CMCE propolis extract respectively with 3.6 mg/200 g BW, 7.2 mg/200 g BW, and 14.4 mg/200 g BW. CMCE propolis was administered for 14 days and then CCl4 was administered on the last day. SOD activity was measured using the colorimetric method, while the hepatocytes fibrosis degree was assessed using Image J Software method with NASH score modification. Results: Post Hoc LSD analysis indicated that SOD activity in group CM-3 (51.67 ± 4.20), CM-7 (70.21 ± 6.26), CM-14 (80.85 ± 4.59) was lower than that in group C-N (23.70 ± 5.12) with P <0.05. Meanwhile, the Mann-Whitney U test showed that the hepatocytes fibrosis degree in group CM-3 (0.85 ± 0.69), CM-7 (1.14 ± 0.37), and CM-14 (0.71 ± 0.48) was significantly lower than that in group C-N (2.28 ± 1.25) with p<0.05.Conclusion: The CMCE propolis extract administration was able to increase the SOD activity and reduce the hepatocytes fibrosis degree of male Wistar rats induced with CCl4

Abstract

Now days lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender are abbreviated as LGBT is the most popular word and being sensible in the world, especially in Indonesia. Based on human right principles, any person in the world including in Indonesia is free to express their gender identity and sexual orientation, even the same sex marriage, freely from unlawful discrimination and violations (Office of Personnel Management, 2015; Yogyakarta Principles, 2006). However, because of the culture and religion differences backgrounds, Indonesians have given this issue various responses. In general, Indonesian public opinion on LGBT are split into two different groups, one minority group is proponent to present of LGBT and any things related to it, and another majority groups are opponent. Objective of this editorial is to discuss how sexual orientation develop from prenatal until emerging of clinical manifestation in adulthood, by no mean to support either group. Otherwise, to give more insight about how male and female get their appropriate sexual orientations and why some of them get inappropriate sexual orientations.

Abstract

In general highly corrosive acids or bases injury can occur due to deliberate or unintentional, such as workplace-related accidence, vocational negligence, unintentional child corrosive poisonings. Acids are considered to be corrosive when it has a high concentration, are irritants at moderate concentrations, and stimulant at low concentrations. This is a report of a strong acid poisioning case of a 60 year-old- man found dead in the middle of a rice field in Demak in September 2015. The victim was one of the farmers protesting the illegal dredging project. At the crime scene, a hoe and a bottle made of “plastic” (used fertilizer container, classified as moderate acid) lying beside the deceased, giving an impression that he commited suicide by consuming the liquid. External examination revealed: burn marks are red brown or black, dry and hard on the eyelids, nostrils, lips, tongue, neck and chest. The results of the examination showed: 1. Mucosal irritation, with a bright red and brownish red, accompanied by ulceration. It was also found irritation in tongue, larynx and edemous glottis and esophagus. 2. Pseudomembranous inflammation of the trachea and bronchi which resulted in superficial epithelial damage and necrosis affect submucosal layer. 3. Brain edema due to anoxia. The forensic examination confirms that the cause of death was homicide.

Abstract

According to Central Java Riskesdas in 2007 the severe malnutrition rate was 4.0%, while the rate in Kendal district was 3.1%. The age of 6-12 months is important because it is transition from liquid to solid foods. A purely breast milk diet is unsufficient to meet the nutritional needs of a fast growing baby growth. Weaning diet for baby is necessary to prevent growth disorder. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of weaning diet on weight gain of 6-12 month infant in posyandu (intergrated health center) of Kutoharjo Kaliwungu Kendal. The study was an analytic observational study with a cross sectional design. 87 samples were taken from the visits of children aged 6-12 months in the posyandu consisted of 53 boys and 34 girls who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The informations of weaning diet was obtained by questionare and interview. The results classified the baby into two groups namely the appropiate groups and inappropriate groups. The infant’s growth was assessed using the growth chart for the previous two months. Data were analyzed by Chi-Square Test. 51 (58.6%) infants fed of the appropriate solid foods, 44 (50.6%) had a good weight gain growth and only 7 (8%) infants has a bad weight gain. While of 36 (41.4%) infants fed inappropriate weaning diet, 30 (34.5%) infants had a bad weight gain and only 6 (6.9%) infants had a good weight gain. The Chi-Square analysis showed p-value of 0.000 (p<0.05), which means that there was a significant difference between the two groups. The weaning food affect on weight gain of 6-12 month infants in posyandu Kutoharjo village Kaliwungu Kendal.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: UVB radiation on skin may increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and cause hyperpigmentation. Polyphenol, an antioxidant contained in tomato, is able to quench ROS and inhibit tyrosinase activity.OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effect of topical tomato lotion on Malondyaldehide (MDA) level and the amount of melanin in skin following UVB radiation.METHODS: In this experimental study, 28 female Balb/c mice are randomly divided into 4 groups: control group (C-G) are given with base lotion, and Lycopersicum groups 0.14 (L-014), 0.7 (L-07) and 1.4 (L-14) are given with tomato lotion of concentration of 0.14%, 0.7% and 1.4% daily, respectively. All of the mice are exposed to UVB at 1MED once every two days for two weeks before lotion application. On day 16, all mice are terminated, and their skin tissues are prepared for MDA level and the amount of melanin assessment.RESULTS: The ANOVA statistical analysis shows a significant difference in the MDA level and the number of melanin of the groups, (p<0.05). The post-hoc LSD analysis shows that the level of MDA in L-14 (1.13) is significantly lower than that in L-07 (2.21), L-014 (2.47), and C-G (5.61), p<0.005. The amount of melanin in L-14 (10.00) is significantly lower than that in L-014 (23.50) and C-G (33.67), p<0.05. The amount of melanin in L-07 (13.00) is not significantly higher than that in L-14, p>0.05. The correlation between MDA level and the amount of melanin shows a strongly positive correlation value (r2) = 0.648CONCLUSION: Topical administration of tomato extract lotion significantly decreases the MDA level and the number of melanin in the mice’s skin following UVB radiation.

Abstract

Nutrition is an important health element for elderly people and influence aging process. Malnutrition prevalence is increasing in this population. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is one of the chronic diseases in elderly that is related to malnutrition. The association between malnutrition and pulmonary disease (including COPD) has been known for a long time. Malnutrition has negative impacts on pulmonary structure, elasticity, and function, strength and endurance of respiratory muscles, pulmonary immunity defense mechanism, and breath control. Inversely, pulmonary disease (including COPD) will increase energy need and may reduce dietary intake. Nutrition intervention in COPD patient is intended for regulating anorexia, improving pulmonary function, and controlling weight loss. Nutrient requirements will be calculated according to the results of nutrition assessment. This article will discuss about nutrition therapy in elderly with COPD. It describes respiratory system in aging, association COPD and nutrition, and nutrition assessment, as well as nutrition intervention in elderly people with COPD.
