Abstract

The study aims to identify the subtitling strategies used in translating cultural words in the subtitle of Disney Animation Movie: Coco. This descriptive qualitative study employed the data in words, sentences, and logical arguments related to the topic. The data were English combined with Spanish subtitle as the source language and Indonesian subtitles as the target language. The theories used in the analyzing process and describing the analysis were the classification of cultural words by Newmark (1988:94-103) and the subtitling strategies based on Gottlieb's theory (1992:66). There were 100 cultural words found in the subtitles, which were divided into five classifications of cultural words, namely: Ecology (26%), Material Culture (22%), Social Culture (20%), Gesture and Habit (18%) and also Organization (14%). On the other hand, after the researcher grouped the cultural words, then the words were analyzed using the subtitling strategies theory of Gottlieb (1992), in which the subtitling strategies were divided into ten types: Transfer (41%), Imitation (14%), Transcription (14%), Paraphrase (7%), Expansion (7%), Deletion (4%), Condensation (3%), Dislocation (3%), Decimation (2%), and Resignation (2%). The dominant subtitling strategy in translating the cultural words is Transfer with 41 data. Based on the analysis result, within this mainly used Transfer strategy, the translator directly translated the text, word-to-word, so that the translation result in the subtitle becomes complete and accurate with its literal meaning according to the source language.

Abstract

The study of language and culture is known as linguistic anthropology. Etymological human sciences have become an interdisciplinary subject of study by utilizing the theoretical underpinnings of numerous disciplines. The current study investigated Punjabi songs using a qualitative analytical approach. The Relevance Theory of Pragmatics, proposed by Deirdre Wilson and Dan Sperber (2004), explained how Abrar-ul-Haq appeared on the horizon to promote Punjabi culture through his energetic Punjabi Bhangra songs. For this study, only two songs were chosen: Billo Day Ghar and Beh Ja Sakal Tay. The study’s findings revealed that Abrar ul Haq used singing as a medium of language to transport cultural norms in general and Punjabi culture in particular. Because he was a famous and world-famous singer, his message spread worldwide, and he became known not only as the Bhangra singer but also as the anthropologist who invented and promoted Punjabi culture through his singing. It is concluded that Punjabi Culture is rich in norms and values. MPhil scholars will expand the scope of the study to include a full-length version of these to promote Punjabi culture. It is suggested that other linguists investigate Punjabi culture to revive and preserve it.

Abstract

This research examines the use of politeness strategies in stand-up comedy roasts. Specifically, it examines how comedians manage power dynamics and societal standards of politeness while addressing those in authoritative positions in a given society. The author investigated stand-up comedy roasting using Brown and Levinson's politeness theory and prior research on humor and impoliteness. The results indicate that comedians used politeness methods, including compliments or flattery, indirectness or hedges, and off-the-record discourse, to achieve their humorous objectives. Using the politeness strategies theory, this research provides insights into how comedians utilize language and humor to manage challenging social situations.

A student and professional designer with a good understanding of culture and communication can create appropriate and effective designs for the target audience. Designers need to study the target audience's values, norms, Language, and beliefs. This is conducted to ensure the designs are acceptable to the target audience in achieving the desired goals. Designers must also consider visual elements such as colors, typography, symbols, and images appropriate to the target audience's culture. The designer must have a right and measurable design concept to accommodate cultural values and norms that are adapted to the placement conditions and the target market of the users of the visual communication design product. In the test and evaluation stage, the designer must test the design on an audience that fits the consumer culture. After that, the designer needs to evaluate the audience's response to the visual communication design product that is produced, including the effectiveness and readability of the message conveyed through the design communication. In conclusion, understanding culture and communication is crucial in designing visual communication designs. Designers who consider these factors can create appropriate and effective designs and solve design problems.
