Abstract

Language is very essential for human being. By using language, we can communicate between one another. The everyday use of this term involves several different senses, which linguistics is careful to distinguish. At its most specific level, it may refer to the concrete act of speaking, writing, or signing in a given situation-the notion of parole, or performance. Objective. To know the students’ ability in translating text of Arts column in News Week Magazine by using Determining Sentence Difficulty and To describe the errors made by the students in translating text of Arts Column in News Week Magazine by using Determining Sentence Difficulty. Sample, The research project will be carried out in Muhammadiyah University of North Sumatera, in Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of English Department at the 6th semester. Total sample 149 respondences. Design of research, The research will apply a descriptive quantitative research model. Applying this model is due to the facts that data in this research basically a static or quantitative data that is based on the students’ ability in using Determining Sentence Difficulty. Data analysis, The following procedure will be implemented to analyze the data, Scoring the students’ answer the researcher can make sure that the students’ understand or able to translate the text. Calculating. Percentage Scores = (Total Scores)/(Total Item Test) x 100%. Conclusions, The translating text of Arts column in News Week Magazine by using Determining Sentence Difficulty are effective to use by the students

Abstract

The use of Google translate (GT) for English assignments is now inevitable. Teachers neither can prevent their students to use GT nor can supervise it since all of the learning process has been running online from home to home. Therefore both teachers and students should bring out the advantages of GT to improve English competence and to reduce the disadvantages of using GT. This study is aimed to investigate the learners’ perspectives of using GT for doing English assignments and to describe the advantages and disadvantages of GT. The study is presented in descriptive qualitative design. The data collection instruments are questionnaires and interview. The participants are 198 students of Information system department, University of Putra Indonesia YPTK Padang. The findings of this study showed that for about 80% of English learners depend their English assignments on GT. Based on the learners’ perspective, the advantages of using GT are time saver and instant results and the disadvantages of using GT are inaccuracy in the results relate to cultural context, idiom, sentences with metaphor and pragmatic aspects and laziness for learning the structure of English language. The study also came with the solution to eliminate the disadvantages of using GT.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know the students’ speaking ability by implementing Talking Football Game at second semester English Department students of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alung. This research was experimental research called One-Shot Case Study which used one class as the sample. The population of this research was second semester English Department students of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alung registering in 2014-2015 Academic Year. The data of this research were collected by using oral test. The data were analyzed by t-test formula. From the calculation of the result of the test, it was indicated that tcalculate was 3, 22 and ttable 2, 02 with a = 0,05. So, it means that tcalculate was greater than ttable and the hypothesis was accepted. The result of this research showed that Talking Football Game increase students’ speaking ability. It implied that Talking Football Game could be used as a technique of teaching speaking ability at second semester English Department students of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alung year of 2014-2015.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to describe about the teachers strategies in teaching English speaking skill at SMA N 1. Speaking is needed for the student to convey their goal and to make them fluent in speaking. To achieve the goal of the lesson, the teacher needs the good and interesting strategies to make the student easier to understand about the material. To gain the needed data, the researcher used observation sheet and interview guideline based on three expert theories. They are killian (1999), Leo (2013). And Anjaniputra (2013). Observation sheet was to identify the strategies that is used by the teacher and interview guideline was to collect the data about the teachers’ reason of choosing that strategies. This research was conducted descriptive qualitative research with phenomenal approach. Descriptive qualitative research with phenomenal method was to describe about the teachers experience in teaching English speaking skill at SMA N 1 Bungo. for the participants, there were 4 English teachers at SMA N 1 Bungo. The results showed that the teachers used 9 strategies in teaching English speaking skill. There were plenty of practice, telling and showing, questioning for checking understanding, setting clear lesson and goals it, teach strategies not just content, getting student working together, training interview, improving their discussion, and make your idea.in addition, plenty of practice become the strategy mostly used by the teacher because speaking need practice to increae the student speaking skill. Abstract

An educational program is a basic reference document for preparing the learning process. The teacher is the person who implements the program that has been determined. The educator's ability to use learning models in teaching can determine whether students are motivated to learn. Edutainment is a learning process designed to combine educational and entertainment content in harmony, making learning activities enjoyable. Entertaining learning is a learning model that includes a series of learning theories that involve students in learning activities that are fun and not boring. Some edutainment learning models that teachers can use are cooperative learning, multiple intelligence learning, PAKEM learning, quantum learning, and CTL (Contextual Teaching Learning )
