Abstract

Cosmetic pharmaceuticals, or cosmetic goods with drug-like qualities, are the most recent innovation in the pharmaceutical industry. Klingman coined the term "cosmeceuticals. "There are many, and they are very different, marine resources. As a result, marine components have a variety of possible applications in the cosmetics industry, including as active ingredients, excipients, and additives. Some of the active marine sources used to create cosmeceuticals include sea weeds, marine fish, phytoplanktons, sponges, corals, sea mammals, fungi, bacteria, and mollusks. Cosmetics made from marine resources provide a variety of advantages, such as antioxidant activity, skin whitening, moisturising, de-pigmentation, and anti-aging. The market is flooded with cosmeceuticals that contain marine ingredients. This review focuses on the potential of marine components, a subject that has drawn academics' interest in recent years.

Abstract

Microbial contamination of peeled oranges for sale were investigated vis-à-vis the microbial air quality at the points of sale. Sixty (60) oranges were purchased from high, low and less vehicular /human traffic sales points and analyzed using standard microbiological procedures. Analysis involved the spread plate and plate exposure techniques. Results of the analysis showed that the mean total microbial (bacteria and fungi) load on the surface of peeled oranges at the points of sale were: 1.0 x 104, 1.4 x 104, 1.4 x 104cfu/ml for less, low, and high human and vehicular movement sales points respectively, which showed no significant difference existed at (P>0.05) the points of sale. Basically, the microbial counts of 1.5 x 103, 2.7 x 103, 1.8 x 103 and 6.4 x 103cfu/ml were obtained for Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella and heterotrophic bacteria respectively on the peeled orange surfaces, which showed a significant difference (P > 0.05) exist within the microbes. Pearson’s correlation coefficient showed 33% and 55% for bacterial and fungal spores on the peeled orange surfaces respectively, were dependent on time. A total of 29 microbial isolates belonging to five species (Escherichia, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, Candida and Aspergillus) were identified. The result showed that the outer surfaces of peeled oranges were contaminated with microbes of medical importance irrespective of the points of sale. Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus counts satisfied the set limit of bacteria in ready-to-eat foods. However, the presence of these bacteria is an indicator of poor sanitary practices of orange vendors and polluted air quality at the sales point. Hence, orange vendors should receive appropriate training in hygiene matters that are in line with their work ethics and they should cover the peeled oranges displayed for sale.

Abstract

The quest by the federal government of Nigeria to achieve quality tertiary education in line with global best practices established some agencies and commissions to help in quality assurance in the various higher institutions such National Universities Commission [NUC], the National Commission for Colleges of Education [NCCE] and the National Board for Technical Education [NBTE]. These regulatory bodies in the bid to attain internal quality assurance directed various institutions under their watch to establish departments or units of quality assurance to help strengthen the internal quality assurance programme of the regulatory bodies. These internal quality assurance units since taking off in some higher institutions, especially in the public universities in Nigeria have been facing some challenges. This paper discussed the problems hindering the effective service delivery of quality assurance units or departments in public tertiary institutions. The paper depends on secondary data and primary data. These data were sourced from both online and print published and unpublished works of literature. Some of these problems facing the quality assurance directorate/ units in Nigerian tertiary institutions include inadequate funding, inadequately trained quality assurance officers, and poor capacity-building programme, inadequate infrastructural facilities and working tools. To ensure effective quality assurance units in Nigerian tertiary institutions, the following have been suggested: adequate funding, employment of adequate quality assurance officers, provision of adequate infrastructural facilities, working tools and effective capacity development programme.
