Abstract

This article discusses a tradition of Muslim-Malay communities in the context of ritual and cultural identity. This study focuses on the Pangil tradition which are carried out by Muslim-Malay communities in Ulu Kapuas, West Kalimantan. This tradition is carried out by inviting the surrounding communities to commemorate the various events that they have been experienced, either joyful or sorrowful experiences. This article reviews the Pangil tradition by using anthropological perspectives to see patterns of cultural communication and their relationship with identities that represent the Muslim-Malay community. This tradition shows that the balance of life - both in the social and divine dimensions - is highly upheld by the Muslim-Malay community in the Ulu Kapuas. This can be seen in the ritual context which is filled with providing meals, recitating the Al-Quran, and praying for their ancestors. In the context of cultural communication, the Pangil ceremony teaches four things; the value of gratitude to God (nyelamat), sharing joy and sorrow (nyelamatand beruwah), social equality (banquet procession); and togetherness and helping each other (organizing tradition).

Abstract

This article aims to highlight the importance of these manuscripts, which have a religious flavor, in relation to writings on the socio-intellectual history of Islam in Indonesia. According to this writer, these manuscripts contain much information and important knowledge, all of which may be beneficial to the reconstruction of several trains of Islamic intellectual thought, particularly Sufi thought, which of course heavily influenced the nature of early Islam in Indonesia. Unfortunately, to date, studies related to this history of Islam in Indonesia have often neglected to use these manuscripts as a primary source. Further, in the context of local Islam, the manuscripts are an important source, and ought to be used as a reference.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v9i2.669

Abstract

In the context of Indonesianism and Islamism, religion teachers serve as avant garde of tolerance, which is then manifested into their social contexts. The attitude of religious tolerance and inclusivity are must have for religion teachers; since these teachers have the closest connection to their students who are mostly young people. We have observed that the increasing radicalism in educational institutions has been associated with particular models of interpretation, understanding, teaching, schools of thoughts, denomination, and even sects within a particular religion. For instance, an international agency has reported the discovery of an "intolerance curriculum" in Saudi Arabian schools (Freedom House, 2006).In Indonesia, the growth of radicalism was due to scriptural, rigid, exclusive, and close-minded interpretation towards religious scripts. In 2008, PPIM (Center for the Study of Islam and Society) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta released an important finding that "the majority of religion teachers in Indonesian public schools have exclusive and conservative view towards religion."DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v24i2.5707

Abstract

This conference was organized with the idea to discuss some crucial issues that challenge global society, in particular, state-government in facing an increasingly globalised world. Society becomes more diverse and complex as a result of infiltration of other cultures and people movements. This situation poses serious challenges for state-government and civil society to ensure that complex social cohesion will not lead to tension and conflict both among members of the society and between the state and the society.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v18i2.438

Abstract

this article deals with one of the basic pillars of traditionalist Islam in Indoneisa, ahlussunah waljama'ah (Ar. ahl al-sunnah wa al-jama'ah, meaning people of the sunnah and the [orthodox] community). it was first advocated in Indonesia by the leading 'ulama of the pesantrens, and then appeared as a key religious principle for Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), an institution of 'ulama in Indonesia established in 1926.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v12i1.648

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze how one group, that is, the Justice and Welfare Party (PKS), is attempting to clean up politics from within the political party system. This article argues that the existence of PKS has given a new but unique political nuance to the political party system in post-New Order Indonesia. The seemingly sudden rise of PKS has taken many by surprise, and it is for this that the party has become the topic of much discourse amongst scholars of Indonesia.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i1.555

Abstract

The Qur'an is believed by Muslims as the most important source of Islamic teachings. Legal matters (ahkam),which are part of (or earn the most important aspect of) Islam, must also be one of the concerns of the Qur'an. But does it mean that a mufassir (exegete), since he also has the deal with the legal verses, is automatically a legal expert? In order to answer that question, the writer of this article justifiably did two of the following steps. First, he chose a mufassir as d case study; second, be decided to put forward a set of legal issues and to see that the chosen mufassir had to say about them. The mufassir that he chose is Quraish Shihab, one of Indonesian scholars who was a director of IAIN Jakarta. As for the legal problems, the writer chose to discuss the follouring: qat'iy-zhanniy (absolute-relative [meaning of the Qur'anic verses]), naskh-mansukh (the abrogating-abrogated verses), and the role of the prophetic tradition vis-a-vis the Qur'an.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v6i2.734

Abstract

Islamic studies conducted in Southeast Asia Western observers during this tendency dominated framework which clearly separates between the teachings of Islam as a set of Islamic practices of living in society. They make the teachings of Islam as contained in the books as a benchmark to see if the Islamic community in this area or not.Such an approach would obviously not be able to capture and understand the reality of life in a Islamic society as revealed in the creative interpretation done by the scholars, naib, chaplain, and local intellectuals who actively and imaginatively connecting their ideas and local practices with the texts and traditions -broader Islamic tradition. They are developing Islamic culture in a different way. This culture mediates the "rules" or theory and "practice" their religion so that they are meaningful social life of Islam. Because it ignores the role of local interpreters famous works of Islamic Southeast Asia failed to understand the relationship between normative texts, the processes of interpretation and any behaviors that make up the reality of Islam that can be observed.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v2i4.821
