Abstract

This paper is an exposition of the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) Approach. After establishing the need for a more effective teaching strategy by presenting the limitations of earlier methods, the emergence of language learning theories is discussed and how they, in turn, paved the way for the development of CLT. CLT is tackled as a more comprehensive approach because it takes into account learner’s communicative needs. There is less emphasis on grammar precision but more on fluency. The learner is the focus, while the teacher is a facilitator. From this, some pedagogical implications are given, although not exhausted, as a way of bringing the approach into the classroom setting

Abstract

This study is an attempt of investigating the rhetoric of thesis acknowledgement by English Department Students. Data of this study are composed of 200 students’ thesis acknowledgements written over a period of ten years (1997-2007). The Thesis acknowledgements (TAs) were collected solely from the English Department of Widya Mandala Chatolic University. The study shows that the students’ TAs (a) are colored with various kinds of formulaic expression, Grice’s maxim flouting, and parallel syntactic construction, (2) employ Hierarchical Pattern of gratitude expression, and circular or repetitive patterns of thought.

Abstract

This study was done to find out the effect of DR-TA to Senior High School students’ reading comprehension and also their reading behavior during the reading activity. In order to answer the problems formulated, the experiment was held, two classes were used. One class was the control class and another was the experiment class. The subjects of the study were students from Grade XI social program of Senior High School. The 50 students were chosen randomly. The treatment was given seven times. Before the treatment, a pretest was given to each group, and then after all of the treatment was given, a posttest was held. The score of the two tests was then processed by ANCOVA. The result of the data analysis showed that the two reading techniques gave different effects on students’ reading comprehension and reading behaviors. Based on the statistical analysis, the students who were taught by DR-TA showed higher reading comprehension achievement progress than the control group who were taught using ARAD. The result of the questioner and video observation showed that most of good reader behaviors were done by the experimental group while less of the control group did them. However, some of good reader behaviors were not done by most of both groups.

Abstract

Pemanasan global (Global Warming) yang dialami oleh bumi kita tampaknya sudah harus menjadi kesadaran setiap orang untuk melakukan tindakan nyata sebagai kepedulian pada lingkungan untuk menekan dampak pemanasan global tersebut. Di satu sisi manusia punya andil atas kerusakan bumi, namun diharapkan di sisi lain manusia harus mampu memberikan jalan keluar atas persoalan tersebut baik secara individual, kelompok maupun para industriawan. Sebut saja Hari Lingkungan Hidup Sedunia (World Environtment Day) yang secara rutin diperingati setiap tanggal 5 Juni merupakan komitmen yang telah disepakati bersama dan harus dilakukan tindakan nyata. Dalam usaha untuk menunjang kelestarian lingkungan, dibutuhkan empat strategi Eco-Positive yakni: Eco Positive Technology, Eco Positive Products, Eco Positive Operations dan Eco Positive Relationships. Hasil dari keempat strategi tersebut menghasilkan barang-barang Eco Products yang proses produksinya pun ramah lingkungan. Menekan emisi gas buang kendaraan bermotor merupakan salah satu tindakan nyata yang telah dilakukan oleh industriawan kendaraan bermotor yang menghasilkan fitur vvti, maupun teknologi cruise control. Di lain pihak kontribusi setiap orang untuk penghematan energi dapat diawali dari kebiasaan di rumah yang secara tak sadar telah melakukan pemborosan energi, sampai mendesain rumah hemat energi serta membeli perangkat elektronik dengan konsep eco-products. Dengan diterapkannya FTA-ASEAN-China sejak 1 Januari 2010 harus diwaspadai oleh para industriawan Indonesia untuk berbenah diri melalui pengembangan riset agar kualitas produknya mampu bersaing di kancah Internasional.

Abstract

Secara teoritis, cara terbaik untuk memperoleh pemahaman konseptual dalam kalkulus adalah membaca berulang-ulang teori dasarnya dan kemudian mengerjakan latihan-latihan yang bervariasi, dimulai dari latihan untuk pengecekkan konsep, menguji pemahaman konseptual melalui grafik, dan latihan menggunakan deskripsi verbal untuk menguji pemahaman konseptual. Tetapi, tidak banyak mahasiswa yang mau membaca berulang-ulang teori dasarnya, bahkan secara umum banyak mahasiswa yang mudah bosan membaca buku, dan sebaliknya sangat tergoda oleh hal-hal yang bersifat visual seperti televisi dan komputer. Penelitian (pengembangan) ini bertujuan membuat CD (Compact Disk) pembelajaran mandiri untuk mengurangi kelelahan dan kejenuhan tersebut. CD memanfaatkan program animasi untuk mempermudah pemahaman konsep dasar kalkulus. Pengembangan pembelajaran ini menggunakan metode/model prosedural, yaitu model yang bersifat deskriptif. Presedur pengembangan meliputi: studi eksplorasi, pengembangan bentuk awal produk, validasi (validasi ahli, uji lapangan), revisi program berdasarkan hasil validasi, dan pengumpulan serta analisis data. Hasil pengembangan adalah CD pembelajaran yang diberi judul REMEDI KONSEP KALKULUS
