Abstract

The photoacoustic spectrometer technique has become the standard in measuring trace samples with the advantages of high sensitivity (up to ppt order), on-line, real time detection and range of operations that are close to 10 8 order. This article reports an experiment using CO2 laser photoacoustic spectroscopy for ethylene (C2 H4) gas detection in the soil during the rainy season based on variations in depth and sampling location using a CO2 laser extracted spectrometer. The lowest limit of detection value (LOD) was obtained at (416 ± 104) ppt. The concentration of ethylene gas in the soil during the rainy season based on the variations in soil depth were (0.18 ± 0.04) ppm for a depth of 0 cm (ground level), (0.17 ± 0.04) ppm for a depth of 15 cm from the ground, and (0.15 ± 0.03) ppm for the depth of 30 cm from the ground. Based on the variations of location of soil, the obtained values were (0.19 ± 0.04) ppm, (0.18 ± 0.04) ppm, and (0.15 ± 0.03) ppm respectively for locations in the North, Center and South were taken around the Biology forest of Gadjah Mada University, which is situated in the western part of the Faculty of Biology and northern section of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. It was concluded that the concentration of ethylene gas in the soil during the rainy season was not significantly affected by depth and location factors.

Abstract

A debate on the effectiveness of Native English Teacher (NEST) and Non Native English Teacher (NNEST) has been an outstanding and continuous issue. The debate becomes more interesting since there are differences in some research findings about which one is more effective in teaching English. Therefore, this present research wants to investigate students’ predilection about the effectiveness of their Native and Non Native English speaking teachers’ in teaching English and its relation towards the students’ achievement in learning and comprehending the materials. A survey was conducted by distributing a questionnaire towards students of MAN 1 Kraksaan- Probolinggo. The result of the survey shows that students believe that having NEST is more preferable if they want to be successful in learning English.

Abstract

The present study examined the students’ grammatical errors and source of errors in their narrative essays. This was a descriptive qualitative research method with a case study design. 84 tenth-grade students of SMA X Surabaya in the 2012-2013 school year participated in this study. The source of data of this research included 84 copies of the students’ narrative essays written in English. The data were the grammatically incorrect sentences. The instrument used for data collection of this study was a narrative writing assignment. The collected data were then analyzed to discover the error types, their frequency of occurrence, and then their sources. The results showed that the grammatical errors which the students made in their personal narrative essays included errors in (a) verb form or tense, (b) shift in tense, (c) plurality of nouns, (d) articles, (e) adjectives or adverbs, (f) prepositions, (g) sentence construction, (h) subject-verb agreement (i) possessive pronoun and contraction, (j) sentence coordination, (k) fused sentence, and (l) pronoun reference. The sources of the above-mentioned grammatical errors included (a) interference from the students’ native language, (b) intra-lingual and developmental factors, (c) communication strategies, and (d) context of learning. The errors caused by interference from the students’ L1 included errors in phonology/orthography, morphology, grammar, lexico-semantic and style. The errors were also attributed by inter-lingual or developmental factors, such as overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restrictions, false analogy, hyperextension, hypercorrection, and faulty categorization. The communication strategies causing the errors included paraphrasing, substitution, words coinage, and language switch. The last source was context of learning which was caused by the teacher, teaching materials, or the order of presentation. The errors show that actually the students still have problems on grammar. Therefore, the students should learn more and the teachers should develop more material and teaching technique. And the teachers should also stress the comparison between Bahasa Indonesia as their first language and English as their second language.

Abstract

This quantitative study employs a correlational design that is to find out the relationship among achievement motivation, academic selfefficacy and the students’ speaking performance. Two questionnaires with four likert-scale were used to measure the students’ level in this study. Based on the result of the data analysis about the relationship among the variables, some points could be concluded. First, there was a significant average positive correlation between achievement motivation level and the students’ speaking performance level (r = .688, sig. = .00). Second, the correlation between academic self-efficacy level and the students’ speaking performance level was a significant moderate positive correlation (r =. 691, sig. = .00). Third, the relationship between achievement motivation combined with academic self-efficacy and the students’ speaking performance was statistically a significant high positive correlation since The result was significant (r= 0.737, sig. = .00). It was concluded that the teachers should be closer to the students in order to build more academic self-efficacy beliefs of the students. Teachers are expected to encourage the students to be more open and share their difficulties in learning especially in the speaking class. Thus, by having close communication between teachers and the students, it is expected that the students’ problems during the learning process can be solved. The students’ achievement motivation and the students’ academic self-efficacy are expected to be higher and stronger in completing the course with high achievement.

The purposes of this study were to identify the effect of Kahoot! in reading comprehension test scores. This study was carried out among 50 students from a senior high school in Surabaya. Data were analysed and presented using descriptive statistics in the form of frequency, means, standard deviation and independent t – test. From this study, it was found that the students’ reading comprehension test scores were higher when they were taught using Kahoot! on the learning process. Besides, their learning attitudes on cognitive, psychomotor and affective showed some significant positive effects. From these findings, it can be suggested that online media like Kahoot! Is strongly recommended to be used in the teaching and learning process of English reading. It is expected that the finding of this study would enlighten the relevant literature of the area.
