Abstract

This research is discussed “Disabled” poem dealing with depression that happened in the speaker condition between his past and future in Wilfred Owen’s “Disabled”. It  focusees on   two major purposes: (1) to find out, to classifies, and describe  the  metaphor  as  seen  through  in  Wilfred  Owen’s  “Disabled”.  (2)  to understand the symbol that reveals depression in Wilfred Owen’s “Disabled”. This research is used written data. The data and the theories were taken from written form and internet browsing. In this study, the researcher used some theories. They were of figure of speech, metaphor, symbol, and depression. Furthermore, the  approaches were used structural approach, formalistic approach, and psychological approach. The approaches were applied to determine the approach in analyzing the metaphor and symbol found in poem. There were two metaphors related to depression, physical depression   and   psychological   depression.   Physical   depression   described   the speaker’s  condition  and  situation  which   cause   the  depression.  Psychological depression  was  the  effect  of  his  disability.  Moreover,  there  were  two  symbols revealing depression namely disappointment and death.   Keywords: Metaphor, Irony, Symbol, Depression

Abstract

Hyperbole employs a sharp-witter arrangement of words, images or meanings, meant to produce a specific effect on an audience. This paper focuses on hyperbole in television advertisement. The aims is to know the kinds of hyperbole used in television advertisement and to discuss the purposes of using hyperboles in television advertisement. This research uses descriptive method which involves the following steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data.This study presents only two types of hyperbole. Referential equivalent method is used to determine the kinds of hyperboles in television advertisement. Meanwhile, pragmatic equivalent method is used to analyze the purpose of of using hyperboles in television advertisement. The first is visual hyperbole and the second is verbal hyperbole. The purposes of using hyperboles in television advertisement are to exaggerate the ideas that need stress, to add an amusing effect in the text, and to grab the attention or to attract the customer. Abstract

The research entitled Lopakhin’s Capitalist Points of View Dealing with Social Class and Class Struggle in Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard aims to find out Lopakhin’s capitalist points of view  dealing with social class and class struggle in Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. This research focuses on the drama entitled The Cherry Orchard as primary data. The writer uses several theories in this research; they are theory of marxism, capitalism, social class, and class struggle. Moreover, library research is used as a method of  collecting the data. In addition, descriptive research is applied in order to understand and learn the conditions, habits, opinions  of  some  characters  in  Anton  Chekhov’s  The  Cherry  Orchard.  Furthermore,  the sociological approach is used to explain Lopakhin’s capitalist points of view presented in The Cherry Orchard. Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the way Erik conducts his love obsession towards Christine Daae in The Phantom of The Opera, and to find out the effects of Erik’s love obsession toward  himself  and  Christine  Daae’s  life.  This research  was  descriptive.  The  data  of  this research were words, phrases, clauses, paragraphs, or discourses containing love obsession in the  novel  The  Phantom  of  The  Opera  written  by  Gaston  Leroux.  The  source  of  data  was document, namely a novel entitled The Phantom of The Opera. The technique of collecting the data was document analysis. Moreover, sociological approach and psychological approach were applied to decide the strategy in analyzing the love obsession and the effect found in the novel. The analysis shows that: (1) the way Erik conducts his love obsession by ruling Christine Daae and trying to do anything to get Christine Daae. Furthermore, (2) the effect towards Christine’s life  is  she  is  being  oppressed  and  the  effect  toward  Erik  is  he  is  become  depressed.  The conclusion  is  people  who  suffer  from  love   obsession  can  do  negative  things  such  as, manipulating, sabotaging, threatening, setting a trap and  kidnapping. The effects can be bad such as, being oppressed for the object of love obsession and getting depressed for the person suffering from love obsession.     Keywords: Love Obsession, Obsession, Psychology

Abstract

This research aimed at finding the translation features of song lyric translation and judging the singability level of the translated song. The research was descriptive qualitative in nature. The data to be analyzed was taken from the soundtrack of Frozen Movie by Disney entitled “Let It Go”. This soundtrack was chosen because of its  popularity amongst the society. Besides, this song had been translated into Indonesia both for dubbing and subtitling. Here, the translated version taken as the data was the one which was applied in dubbing. The result of the research showed that mostly used translation feature was the use of rhyme. Unfortunately, the rhyme of the original song were mostly translated into non-rhyming words. The other features that were also contributive were omission of words and use of paraphrase respectively. The analysis on the singability level was also showed an interesting result. The prosodic match reached the high level while the poetic match reached the middle level.   Keywords: song lyric, translation, dubbing

Abstract

The research aimed to discuss imagery dealing with death in Algernon Charles Swinburne’s “In Memory of Walter Savage Landor” and “Garden of Proserpine”. It focused on two major purposes: (1) to find out, classify and describe the imageries dealing with death in Swinburne’s “In Memory of Walter Savage  Landor”  and  “The  Garden  of  Proserpine”.  (2)  to  understand  how  the  death  is  based  on Swinburne description in his poem entitled “In Memory of Walter Savage Landor” and “The Garden of Proserpine”. In conducting the research, some theories were used. They were theory of imagery, kinds of imagery, death, and meaning.  Additionally, the research used two approaches. They were structural approach and formalistic approach. Furthermore, descriptive method and library research were used to finish the analysis and collecting the data. There were some visual and organic imageries which could be found in the poems. They were used to describe the body’s condition of the dead man and what would come after death. Furthermore, there were some images of death, that is, death as eternity, freedom, and certainty.   Keywords: imagery, death, image

Abstract

This research analyzes literary work which focused on a poem. This research aimed to describe the  metaphor dealing with hypocrisy in the poem entitled “Ghosts” written by Anne Sexton. The research focused on two major purposes: first, to describe the lines which belonged to metaphor dealing with hypocrisy and second, to reveal the theme of bitterness in the poem. Moreover, there were some theories which were used in this  research. They were theory of meaning, figure of speech, metaphor, theme, and bitterness. Furthermore, this research had two approaches, that is, structural and formalist approach. The method used in analyzing the data in this research is descriptive –qualitative method. The technique of collecting data in this research was library  research. The analysis showed that: there are three hypocrisies which are seen through metaphor in the poem, hypocrisy related to women, men, and children. Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the techniques employed to translate the cultural words and their accuracies. The data was obtained from a classic novel written by George Orwell entitled Animal Farm and its Indonesian version under the same title translated by Bakdi Soemanto. This research applied descriptive-qualitative method. As the population of this  research was too large, this research applied purposive sampling. The techniques  employed in translating the cultural words were  judged  by  using  translational  equivalent  method.  While,  the  degree  of accuracy  was  determined  by  the  employment  of  distribusional  method.  The finding  of  this  research  presented  ten  techniques  employed  to  translate  the cultural words, namely adaptation (15), amplification (7), borrowing (14), calque (7), description (11), generalization (11),  modulation (2), particularization (3), reduction (4), and transposition (6). In terms of  accuracy, the renderings were classified into three degrees. They were accurate (47),  less accurate (30), and inaccurate (3). Most of the cultural words were translated accurately and only a small number of the words was translated inaccurately.   Keywords: Cultural Words, Translation Techniques, Accuracy in Translation
