Abstract

Keywords: cooperative principle, violation of maxims, Revlon, salespersonsLanguage is a system to transfer and to inform something through communication. In the real life sometimes people do not obey the cooperative principles. The researcher conducts a study on the violation of conversational maxims by salespersons of “Revlon” cosmetic in two department stores in Malang. There are two problems in this study: (1) What maxims are violated by the salespersons of Revlon cosmetic while offering their products to customer? (2) What are the possible factors which cause the violation of certain maxims? This study answers the problems by using theory proposed by Paul Grice. This research used a qualitative method because the analysis conducted by the researcher was descriptive. The data are the utterances from the salespersons of Revlon cosmetic which contain violation of maxims. The results of this research show that there are 21 utterances containing violation of maxims produced by two salespersons in two different places which are Matahari Matos and Center Point MOG. In this research, maxim of quantity is often violated by those salespersons for 11 time; maxim of manner 8 time; maxim of quality 1 time; maxim of relation 1 time. The possible factors of violating a certain maxim in the salespersons utterances are: to explain more or stress something in order to make the hearers understand more; to hide the truth from the hearer and also to make the hearer believe in what the speakers say; to expect to get more attention from their customer by giving exaggerating statements about the products that they tried to offer to the customer; and to give information that they think is important. In conclusion, this study shows that violation can happen in the real life situation like in the conversation between the salespersons of Revlon cosmetic with the customers while offering the products. Finally after finishing this study, the researcher hopes that there will be more students in Faculty of Cultural Studies that do research in violation of maxims in their study.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Keywords: Poetry, Semiotics, Sociology of Literature, Human Nature, Dehumanization, Technology. Poetry is one of literary works that represents phenomena happening in society. A poet usually uses a poem as a media to describe the condition of his or her society by using specific words picturing the phenomena. One of the phenomena happening in society nowadays is technology development. Even though technology can help human to ease their daily life, it can also change all of their social aspects, which can make themselves deprive their qualities. Later, this phenomenon is usually called as dehumanization. This study aims to find out the effect of technology development toward culture and human nature as pictured in Touchscreen poem. This research analyzes the dehumanization effect of technology toward culture and human nature by using Semiotics and Sociology of Literature theory. Peirce’s semiotics theory of signs is used to reveal the meaning of Touchscreen poem. For further analysis on the human social aspects, the writer uses Sociology of Literature to analyze the aspects of human life those are affected by technology development. The result of the research shows that in Touchscreen poem, the poet pictures the dehumanization phenomenon by technology affecting culture aspects, such as lifestyle, social status, and communication. Besides, that phenomenon also affects human nature, in the relation to human feelings. By covering those aspects, technology changes modern people style of living. They usually buy high price technology device to symbolize their social status and to communicate with otherwithout real social contact. Later, the lack of contact decreases human feeling qualities, resulting effects to other people and nature. For the next researchers who look for new object to be analyzed, they are suggested to use Touchscreen poem that is analyzed by using postmodernism–hyper reality theory, because people nowadays usually have more attention to the World Wide Web than the real world. It means that those people have become more involved with the hyperreal world and less with the physical real world. People nowadays likely chose to stay online and update their daily status in social media rather than communicate directly with their family or friends.

Abstract

Keywords: cultural invasion, beauty myth, African-American, Toni Morrison, TheBluest Eye Cultural invasion aims to brainwash marginalized group to make them follow the culture of the invader. It influences each component of way of life, including the way women build a concept of beauty. In fact, the concept of beauty is influenced by the White as a dominant group. The Bluest Eye novel by Toni Morrison explores Pecola Breedlove, a victimized African-American girl of White beauty standard. Therefore, the study conducted investigates on how the era of 1940s, as the setting of time of the novel, shapes the beauty standard and how the images of beauty are constructed through culture. In addition, this study observes on what are the impacts of beauty myth to Pecola Breedlove. Socio-cultural approach is used in this study since it deals with one’s relation with society and its culture. This approach leads to the use of cultural invasion’s theory to analyse sociological condition when the inferior culture is invaded by the superior one. Whereas, theories of ideology, power, and hegemony are applied to analyse capitalism issue. The last, to discover Pecola Breedlove’s perspective of ideal beauty, the concept of beauty myth purposed by Naomi Wolf is used. The result of this research shows that through four kinds of cultural commodities, girl’s dolls, girl favourite stars, mass media, and movie stars, the beauty myth are infused to change the African-American’s perspective of beauty. Succeedingly, cultural invasion gives two impacts to Pecola Breedlove, adoration to the White beauty standard and obsession to have blue eyes. The following researcher is suggested to explore another significant character, Claudia Macteer, especially on her resistance against White beauty myth by using Black feminism theory. Furthermore, archetypal literary criticism, specifically the using of seasons in Northrop Frye’s archetypal schema is applicable since Claudia’s life moves through a cycle of four seasons—autumn, winter, spring, and summer.
