Abstract

Loneliness is the condition when one lack of social relationship, particularly love or intimate relationship. The effect of loneliness can be varied. It must be painful but for some people it is the chance to deeply know about them so that they can achieve self actualization.Love In The Time Of Cholera is the film dealing mostly with loneliness issues. It tells about a man who is loyal to wait for his lover , Fermina Daza. In waiting his lover he suffers from loneliness yet he wants to be a respected man in society so that Fermina Daza will regard his presence as an honourable man. This study employs qualitative research which uses Psychological Approach. The concepts used in exploring Love in the Time of Cholera Movie are Self-concept, Loneliness, and Existential Approach and combined with Self Actualization theory proposed by Abraham Maslow. The analysis of the movie is based on the script and picture in the movie. That is why; it is worth also to use mise en scene studies to strengthen the analysis. This research reveals how Florentino Ariza can achieve his self actualization within his loneliness. Since he cannot bear on the pain, he gets rid of his loneliness by having sex with 622 women. Yet, he still feels lonely since his love need cannot be fulfilled. Actually, his sex habit only satisfies his physiological need which is the basic need in Maslow’s hierarchy. Meanwhile, his loneliness which comes from his need of love will never be fulfilled if he cannot win Fermina’s heart again because he also builds his self-concept to be an eternal love for Fermina Daza. Abstract

Every person has his or her unique personality. Personality is one of factors affecting language learning. There have been some studies analyzing about personality profile towards language proficiency, but no research tries to use the students of English Program as the participant. This research aims to investigate about: (1) the dominant personality profile and (2) differences and similarities on personality profile among 8th semester students of English Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Studies at Brawijaya University in each language proficiency level. This research used questionnaire of Cognitive Style inventory© by Ross Reinhold, INTJ (2006) given to 60 participants. Those participants are divided into 3 groups based on their language proficiency levels. Those group classifications are 20 participants in Beginning level (with TOEFL score less than 450), 20 participants in Intermediate level (with TOEFL score around 450 to 513), and 20 participants in Advanced level (with TOEFL score more than 513).The result of the study indicates that students with different language proficiency levels have different dominant personality profile. Beginning level has Extrovert Sensing Thinking Perceiving and Extrovert Sensing Thinking Judging as the dominant personality profiles. Then Introvert Sensing Thinking Judging becomes the dominant personality profile in Intermediate level. For advanced level, the most dominant is Extrovert Sensing Thinking Perceiving. Besides, differences are found in this research. They are located on the difference dominant of personality profile in each language proficiency types and the different percentage reached by several personality profiles in each language proficiency level. In addition, the similarity is found on Extrovert Sensing Thinking Perceiving being the dominant personality profile in beginning and advanced level. Then the similarity is also indicated on 3 personality profiles getting the lowest percentage in all language proficiency levels. From the result of the research, it is shown that Extrovert Sensing Thinking Perceiving is the dominant personality type in all language proficiency levels. Then this research suggests that the future researcher will be able to make a research with different subject or use different aspect that could be related to personality type. Keywords: Personality, Language proficiency, Language Learning

Abstract

People need to convey certain messages which are delivered to the addressee as a form of cooperation when having communication with others as social beings. In producing utterance in communication, people often perform face threatening acts (FTAs) which cause damages to the hearer’s face. The writer conducted a study about FTA in 300 movie which presents about politeness phenomena happening in life aspect at the ancient time of Greece. There are two problems to be solved, they are: (1) What utterances containing Face-Threatening Acts are found on main character’s utterances of 300 movie and (2) What FTA strategies are used by the main character’s utterances of 300 movie. This study uses qualitative approach to gather and analyze the data. It is included into document analysis in analyzing and interpreting the utterances produced by the main character of 300 movie through the script of the movie. The results of this study shows that there are four FTA strategies applied by main character of the movie, they are: Bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and indirect strategy. King Leonidas uses those strategies to perform FTAs. In the appliance of FTA strategies, he mostly used positive politeness in his utterance to show cooperation and effort to minimize the social distance with others. However, he still considers to perform FTA baldly in giving orders to his soldiers.Based on the results, the writer suggests to the next researchers to use other objects reflecting more about performing FTA in daily life also use more theories in analyzing the implicit meanings of the speaker’s utterances. Keywords: Politeness, Face, Face Threatening Act (FTA).

Abstract

Women in the media are often shown in a negative through the potrayal displayed in public spaces. In the mass media, the analysis of the potrayal of women in the mainstream media and the creation of alternatives to the feminist view of women in the media became an important project in feminist theory. Potrayal of women in the media are called feminists as a major source for the production of patriarchal social relations in general. In this study, beer advertisements at the beginning and the end of 1930 was chosen to see the changes in Japan's potrayal of women in the mass media. Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic theory is used to dissect the advertising of the socio-historical, which is an essential element for the writer to find a change of potrayal in the ad. Through the five stages of Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic theory, namely dialogue with the reader, the author reveals his interpretation of the advertisement is based on feminism and women's point of view in the media. The results revealed that of the four studied advertisements, two ads from early 1930s and two advertisements from the late 1930s showed a change in the potrayal of women. Such changes appear not only on how women appear physically, ie with minimal clothing and erotic, but also of the role of women themselves. The role of women in these advertisements in the late 1930s is much better than the role of women featured in advertisements in the early 1930s.In addition, for further research suggested that Japanese learners more critical of the advertisements in the Japanese media, the advertisements that appear in the mass media show women potrayals to a certain extent. Keywords: Japanese beer advertisements, hermeneutic, feminism, women in the media

Abstract

Nowadays, English is getting more important in Indonesia. Not only as a means of communication with the foreigner but also as one of the subjects in National Examination. Learning English is different from learning Bahasa Indonesia because it has many different aspects of language including grammar, vocabularies and also pronunciation. Then, learning strategies are needed to make the learning easier and faster. This study is conducted in order to investigate the language learning strategies used by Raden Paku Islamic Junior High School students and to investigate the relationship between six categories of language learning strategies and English proficiency. The samples of this study are 114 students consisting of 40 students of 7th grade, 37 students of 8th grade and 37 students of 9th grade. The research instruments are SILL questionnaire and English score. The data obtained from the returned surveys are analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment correlation. The results shows that the students are medium users of overall strategies with metacognitive strategy as the most frequently used by 7th grade and 8th grade students. Meanwhile, metacognitive and affective strategies are the most frequently used by 9th grade. The lowest strategy is compensation strategy for all grades. The significant correlation was found between Language Learning Strategies and 7th English proficiency but no significant correlation was found in 8th grade and 9th grade. The writer suggests the teachers to promote language learning strategy application to the students especially for memory and affective strategy because they have significant correlation with English proficiency. She also suggests for the next writers to conduct the research in the level of elementary school and correlate language learning strategy with the specific learning skill. Key words: language learning strategies, language proficiency, the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL).

Abstract

English is one of international languages in the world and mainly used in international forums. Because of its importance, Indonesian government decides to make English as a formal subject in schools. Students are expected to have basic competences in four skills those are listening, speaking, reading, and writing comprehensively to reach functional literate. Students should have strategies to improve their proficiency and skill in English. The aims of this study are to find out (1) how language learning strategies applied by students of 11th grade at State Senior High School 3 Malang (SMAN 3 Malang), and (2) how English proficiency levels relate to the use of language learning strategies by students of 11 grade at SMAN 3 Malang. This study applied quantitative research. This study used Strategy Inventory for(SILL) version 7 (EFL/ESL) by Oxford (1990) translated into Bahasa Language Learning Indonesia as the instrument. The English raport score was used to measure students’s proficiency. This study use descriptive analysis and Pearson Product Moment to investigate the use of language learning strategies and the correlation between language learning strategies and English proficiency. The participants were students of 11th grade at SMAN 3 Malang divided into three different levels of English proficiency; those are high, intermediate and low. The results of this study indicate that students are in medium level meaning that they sometimes use those strategies in learning a language. Students with high English proficiency used most metacognitive strategies while intermediate English Proficiency students used most compensation strategies and low English proficiency students used most affective strategies. The positive correlation was found between high English proficiency students and metacognitive strategies and negative correlation was found between low English proficiency students and memory strategies. Based on these findings, students are suggested to apply more metacognitive strategies and combine other strategies in their learning process. For further researchers, it is recommended to examine the language learning strategies in speaking, writing, reading, or listening through interviews and observations. Further researchers are also suggested to use other theories of language learning strategy in conducting research. Keywords: Language Learning Strategies, English Proficiency

Abstract

Learning styles are the important factors to help students to learn a second or foreign language. A learning habit of every individual is needed to support the student’s learning to be more effective, for example by taking an English course. Learning styles can be classified into: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile, group, and individual. This study is conducted to examine the language learning styles applied by the students of Basic English Course (BEC) in Pare, Kediri. This study applies descriptive quantitative approach, aimed at describing the learning styles of BEC students. The subjects of this study are eighty students of Basic English Course taken by random sampling. The data were taken using Perceptual Learning Style Preferences (PLSP) questionnaire, designed by Joy M. Reid. Every number of learning styles is classified into three categories, namely: major, minor, and negligible learning style preferences. The result of this study reveals that the most preferred language learning styles are auditory major learning style which falls into the highest score to the lowest score are auditory with the mean score of 60%, kinesthetic with the mean score of 57.5%, group with the mean score of 57.5%, tactile with the mean score of 47.5%, individual with the mean score of 43.9%, and visual learning style with the mean score of 21.5%. From this study, it can be concluded that every student learns based on their own learning style and has different learning styles which can support their progress in learning. In suggestions, it is expected that the institution can add some facilities to support the learning process for example English LAB. For the students, it can be more effective if they always be consistent listening the material and focus on hearing the teacher’s explanation. For the teachers, they can help students in understanding their learning styles, and for the next researchers can analyze with other measurements and the other model of learning styles to measure students’ success. Keywords: learning styles, Training Class (TC) program , PSLP questionnaires.

Abstract

Psycholinguistics is the study of how human can build, apply, acquire also understand the language in psychological and neurobiological way. It also deals with language disorder and it is divided into two types; acquired and developmental disorder. In this study, the writer only investigates the developmental disorder because the subject of this study suffers from developmental disorder called as developmental dyslexia. This disorder will trouble someone in reading and writing. In this situation, a dyslexic can do miscue when they read something. To investigate the miscue reading from a dyslexic the writer did miscue analysis by using Reading Miscue Inventory (RMI). The writer focuses on the miscue action during oral reading from Amelia Septiarisa. The aim of this study is to find out the types of errors from reading miscues produced by Amelia Septiarisa as a dyslexic.  This study uses qualitative approach because it analyzes the reading miscue from a dyslexic student in Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya. Case study  is applied in this study  to get the detail description from the subject. The data of this study is miscue reading from a dyslexic, Amelia Septiarisa.     This study reveals that there are five types of errors which occur in miscue analysis. Those are substitution, omission, self-correction, hesitation and repetition. The writer does not find insertion and reversal from miscue analysis process. From the test, the writer finds 2 substitutions, 4 omissions, 3 self-corrections, 50 hesitations and 11 repetitions. The writer uses the table of scoring system sheet to show the types of error showed from the subject’s utterances and gestures. In this study, the writer concludes that Amelia Septiarisa cannot read orally in loud mode. In addition, the result of this study cannot be generalized to other adult dyslexic people. Reading orally will give her hard situations and make her do miscues action during the oral reading.     The last, the writer suggests that the next researcher who wants to analyze miscue action from dyslexic can apply another tool such as Retropective Miscue Analysis (RMA) to analyze reading miscue on a dyslexic. Keywords: Dyslexia, Dyslexic, Miscue, Miscue analysis, Reading Miscue Inventory (RMI)

Abstract

Narrative is one kind of popular writing. Therefore, students have to consider the cohesion and coherence of their writing. In creating coherent writing papers, cohesive devices has significant role because they provide not only surface evidence for the text unity but also express the continuity that exist between one part of the text and another. However, some studies show that male and female have different style in using language. Thus, the writer is interested in investigating the cohesive devices used in narrative written by male and female students. The problems are (1) What are the types of cohesive devices used by male and female students in their narrative writing? and (2) how do cohesive devices help a coherence of their paragraphs?    This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The data of this study are cohesive devices taken from 6 narrative writings written by SBI EKA English Course Pasirian Students. All of the narrative writings are going to be analyzed based on Halliday and Hasan’s theory of cohesive devices.     The result of this study shows that male students use 61.31% grammatical cohesive devices and 38.68% lexical cohesive devices. Meanwhile, female students use 68.67% grammatical cohesive devices and 31.32% lexical cohesive devices. It can be concluded that male students use lexical cohesive devices in higher percentage rather than female, while female students use grammatical cohesive devices in higher percentage than male. The differences are found in terms of grammatical cohesive devices used. Substitution is only found in female students’ narrative writings, while no male student uses it. Ellipsis is only found in male student’s narrative writing, while no female uses it.     From the result, it can be concluded that cohesive devices have important implications for understanding the role of coherence in writing quality. It is expected that this research is useful for the teachers, students, and any other professions who have intension to produce more qualified and rationale text of speech which can achieve their aim.Key words : cohesive devices, coherence, narrative writing, male and female students.
