Abstract

Psycholinguistics show that words are stored in the mental lexicon. In exploring the mental lexicon, WAT (Word Association Test) has been used by psycholinguists. The principle of WAT is that stimulus words are presented to the subjects and then the subjects are asked to respond with the first word that appears in mind. There are three problems to be solved in this research, namely: (1) What types of word association are produced by intermediate EFL learners at Study Program of English; (2) What pattern emerges from the responses in L1 and L2 produced by those intermediate EFL learners; (3) What are the reasons of those intermediate EFL learners in choosing the responses. In this research, the researcher investigates the mental lexicon in intermediate EFL learners of fourth semester students at Study Program of English in Universitas Brawijaya. This research is expected to describe the comparison of mental lexicon between L1 and L2. Furthermore, It is expected to trigger the exploration of mental lexicon in Bahasa Indonesia. This research is classified as qualitative research. The type of qualitative research employed in this research is case study. The data were collected from 26 EFL learners from Study Program of English, Universitas Brawijaya. All subjects were asked to take a word association test which consists of eight stimulus words in Indonesia and eight stimulus words in English. Keywords: mental lexicon, first language, second language, word association test.

Abstract

The issue of Existentialism in literary work has become interesting topic to discuss since the late of 1800’s till nowadays. This phenomenal thought led to the new era of philosophical thought, as many philosophers called post modernism. The idea of "God is Dead (Gott ist tot)" introduced by Nietzsche has changed all the mindsets of western people at that time to find the new "faith", value, and morality. The Ubermensch born as the Overman or Superman that can handle and answer the death of God. They (the Ubermensch) are those who are brave to challenge the death, they love challenge and short time of peace to measure their best potential. Nietzsche explained that Ubermensch is the combination of three characters: strength, cleverness, and pride. Ubermensch also has four aspects: Gott ist tot (God is dead), the spirit to gain the power and authority, bravery to challenge the death, and trans valuation moral. Meanwhile, one of the manifestations of Ubermensch concept is Der Wille Zur Macht (Will to Power). Nietzsche himself adores art as his sublimation to manifest his Ubermensch. It can be proven by his work entitled "The Birth of Tragedy". The idea of Ubermensch and Will to Power according to writer’s interpretation has influenced Chairil Anwar "as the famous Indonesian poet" to make the poem that manifest the idea of Ubermensch and Will to Power. This study uses qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomenon being studied. The intrinsic and extrinsic elements of the poems are used by the writer to reveal the manifestation of Ubermensch and Will to Power in Chairil Anwar’s four poems.By analyzing the intrinsic and extrinsic element of the poems, the writer reveals the manifestation of Ubermensch in Chairil Anwar’s selected poems. They are "Aku", "Kerawang Bekasi", "Prajurit Jaga Malam", and "Maju". The manifestation of Ubermensch shows the aspect of "Bravery to Challenge the Death and the manifestation of Will to Power"Keywords : Existentialism, Ubermensch, Will to Power, Chairil Anwar’s Four Poems.

Abstract

This research is designed to find out characteristics of alexia shown by Howard Engel as an alexic (alexia patient) and to find out the patterns of reading difficulties shown by him. This research used a document/textual analysis approach. There are two data in this study, the primary data is sentences/narration taken from the book The Man Who Forgot How to Read: True Story and the secondary data is utterances taken from the video entitled Alexia sin agrafia:. The researcher collaborated with Prof. Alexander Howard Engel (Oliver Sacks) P. Leff as the expert validator and had the discussion via e-mail.The researcher used the theory of Leff and Schofield (2010) and Mize (2013). The results of this research show that there are seven characteristics of alexia and seven patterns of reading difficulties. Seven characteristics that are shown by Howard Engel as the patient of alexia are (1) he cannot read or recognize either printed or written form, (2) his right visual field is not intact, (3) he has problems with letter identity, (4) he has problems with memory, (5) he has difficulties in processing numbers or non-linguistic stimuli, (6) he experiences difficulty in reading as word length increases (word-length effect), but (7) he still can write. Seven patterns of reading difficulties that are shown by him are (1) having difficulty in relating letters and sound, (2) having difficulty in recognizing consistent patterns, (3) having slow rate of decoding, (4) having to apply decoding strategies to recognize the whole words, (5) having slow speed reading and comprehension falters, (6) having an ability to fluently identify words, and (7) having lack workable strategies for comprehending and remembering what he read. Some suggestions are made for the next researchers to explore and investigate more about patients of alexia in the real life. Moreover, the next researchers can analyze the alexia phenomena by using other theories. Key words : Psycholinguistics, Alexia, Reading Difficulty

Abstract

Existentialism proposes the idea that human being has to define his own life. Existentialism as a universal element in all thinking is the attempt of man to describe his existence and its conflicts. Human is said to have existential crisis when he is filled with the question of what is his true essence as a human being in the contemporary world. This problem however is able to encourage him to seek for the solution. Since each individual has his own way to solve his problem, this study analyzes the effort of facing existential crisis in Aleph, an autobiographical novel by Paulo Coelho which manifests his theosophical perspective. Related to this case, this study aims to describe the portrayal of Coelho’s existential crisis and to analyze the portrayal of Coelho’s theosophical perspective as part of the process of gaining self- discovery. This study uses qualitative approach particularly literary study to analyze phenomena related with the problem in the novel. This study reveals that Aleph portrays Coelho’s existential crisis and theosophical perspective and also the manifestation of the interrelated ideas between existentialism and theosophy by taking the similar concepts which cover the importance of self- awareness, to act, and the aim to achieve something that can improve one’s quality of being an authentic human. It is suggested that the next researchers to do deeper study and analysis in connection with existentialism and to relate this philosophy to biographical studies in order to broaden the critical analysis about the relationship between existentialism and the author’s biography.  Keywords: Theosophy, Self- Discovery, Existential Crisis, Paulo Coelho, Aleph

Abstract

Language st yle is kind of language variation. In a particular occasion, people use different styles depends on to whom and where they speak, what the content of conversation is and the aim of the conversation. For example, language style which is used by a servant is different when speak to his/her boss and to other servants even though in one situation. It is because there are different social classes among them. Style brings complexity in using language in a community. In Javanese, its st yle is very complex because the speaker’s style deals with socialcontext. The writer wants to reveal Javanese language style through wayang orang because it is one of entertaining media that still can be used to learn Javanese language. There are two problems to be solved in this stud y, namely (1) what kind of Javanese language style and its stylist ic level which is used by Raden Abimanyu? (2) what is the dominant social factor that influences the using of Javanese language style b y Raden Abimanyu? This study is qualitative study because the writer wants to describe her finding of Raden Abimanyu’s language style towards other characters. The finding is explored and given the detail views of the topic. The result of the stud y shows that there are three kinds of Javanese language style which is used by Raden Abimanyu. They are ngoko, madya and krama. He used krama to the people that have high social class, they are Gatotkaca and Samba. Their stylistic level is the highest, level 3a. He used ngoko to the low class, Semar. Its stylistic level is t he lowest, 1. Moreover, he spoke madya style toward two people; the first is Gareng and the second is Gatotkaca. However, both of them are in different levels. In Gareng, his st ylistic level is 1a because it is almost similar to ngoko and toward Gatotkaca his st ylistic level is 3. In addition, it is found that there are three factors that influence his stylistic level. They are participant, topic and function. The participant is the most influencing factor. Here, Abimanyu consideredd about whom he spoke whether his addressee has high or low social class. However, he also considered the topic and the funct ion of the conversation. He smoothed his language if the topic was serious and the function was to ask an advice. The writer suggests to the reader especially who Javanese can understand and love their local language and used it appropriately to prevent Javanese from extinct ion. She also suggests to the next researcher to conduct the study about Javanese language style in another Javanese traditional theater for example Ketoprak and Ludruk or analyze other characters for example Semar who has unique identity. Keywords : Language st yle, wayang orang, social status.
