Abstract

Gothic is one of the most famous genres in literary work to describe romantic tragedy. Gothic contains elements are related to mysterious atmosphere, unreal situation, or distorted character. The Fall of the House of Usher is one example of Gothic stories which was firstly published in 1839. It tells about the story of twins who suffer mental illness. Roderick, as the main character, has two different sides of characteristic which makes him imbalanced. He does not recognize his own personality. This study uses archetypes characters theory to describe the characteristics of a person based on the ancient picture of the character that is used for theatrical performances in the past. The archetype of persona and shadow are selected in this study and subsequently used to identify two elements of the self-realization of the character.Archetype of persona is explained through the combination of Roderick’s face that resembles the image of an angel, but also, looks strange. Archetype of shadow is described through the creepy expressions of the voice, the bad attitude when he buries her sister alive, the wrong mindset about the existence of other God, as well as the wrong perception about things that unreal. The result of the study shows that shadow is a dominant than persona. Roderick was unable to identify the shadow, so that self-realization cannot be achieved. Archetypes anima/animus was needed to achieve self-realization in balance composition together with persona and shadow.Key Words : Archetypes Character, Persona, Shadow, Self-Realization

Abstract

People as social humans need a language to communicate with others. They need it since language is a device for communication. In society, language isremarkably varied. One of the varieties of language is register. Register is alanguage used in particular field, profession, and situation. The language offootball commentary, pimp, and radio broadcaster are considered as examples ofregister language. The study of register can be conducted from many aspects suchas, the vocabulary, syntactic features, phonology characteristics, register variable, etc. In this study, the researcher conducted the register used in live text footballcommentary on Euro 2012 final football match between Spain and Italy. There arethree problems of the study which were proposed: (1) What the registers are usedin live text commentary, (2) What the meanings of registers are used in live textcommentary, (3) What the linguistic features of register are used in live textcommentary on Euro 2012 final football match between Spain and Italy.  This study used qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear andsystematic description about the phenomena being studied. The data were onlytaken from live text commentaries which were uploaded on BBC sport website.  This study revealed that the registers used in live text commentarycommonly have different meaning when it relates to other field, profession andsituation. Some registers are unfamiliar words which do not exist in other fieldoutside the football. This study also revealed that live text football commentaryusually uses features such as, syntactic reduction and passive voice. From bothfeatures, the commentator uses the syntactic reduction more frequently. Thereduction and passive voice are not due to the insufficient competence of thecommentator. Nevertheless, there are some reasons behind such as, to build extraspeed in delivering the event. The researcher suggests the English Department students conduct thedeeper study about register since this study did not cover all aspects of registeryet. He also hopes that the next researcher will conduct the comparison studyabout register used in live text commentary with that used in live oralcommentary. Keywords: Sociolinguistics, Register, Live text commentary

Abstract

Jewish people have been facing discrimination and negative stereotyping for ages. Conflicts between the majority and Jewish communities, propagated by racial prejudice, result in violent acts committed by the society to isolate the Jews. MAUS is a biography of Art Spiegelman’s father, VladekSpiegelman, which tells about his experience in surviving the persecution of Jewish people in Poland during World War II, and also about Art Spiegelman’s efforts to defy the lingering stereotypes of Jewish people in the present. This research is conducted to analyze the acts of discrimination and negative stereotyping against Jews and the author’s efforts to defy them. Sociological approach is utilized in this research in order to explain the root of prejudice and discrimination against Jewish people, as well as the negative stereotypes labeled to them. The finding of this research shows that VladekSpiegelman, the main character, faced various violent discriminatory acts inflicted against Jews due to the Nazi’s racial propaganda. The propaganda affected the majority by creating an ingroup-outgroup bias, thus forcing the minority Jews into isolation. Nevertheless, VladekSpiegelman survived using cunningness and hard-work ethic; both are stereotypes highly associated with Jews. On the other hand, Art Spiegelman faced difficulties in portraying his father in the graphic novel, since VladekSpiegelman’s aforementioned positive traits becomes negative in the present. The father-and-son conflict brought Art Spiegelman into self-doubting his identity as a Jew. The self-doubt could be diminished by the realization of VladekSpiegelman’s traits as a survivor, thus boosting Art Spiegelman’s pride as part of the Jewish community.   Keywords: prejudice, discrimination, stereotyping, Jews, MAUS, graphic novel.

Abstract

Culturally, people in different parts of the world arrange themselves in apatriarchal society. Patriarchal culture is contributing greatly to marginalizewomen with gender roles which seem to be determined entirely and naturalized bypatriarchal society, this phenomena is called as female stereotype. Language(discourse) also takes a part to create the constructions of gender, ideology andstereotype, eventually adapted by women tabloids as a mass media having powerto spread their "messages". Crit ical Discourse Analysis (CDA) sees discourse as a"social pract ice" which can give social impact to the societ y. This study isconducted to figure out the meaning constructions conveyed in "Cant iq" tabloidheadlines and to find out female stereotype presented by "Cant iq" tabloid. This study uses qualitative approach, and there are two types of the studyused; content or document analysis and case study. The writer uses criterion casesampling to find out participants. The participants of this study are the readers of"Cantiq" tabloid consisting of 2 women from young adulthood and 2 women frommiddle adult hood. The data are taken from "Cant iq" tabloid headlines duringJanuary 2013 to February 2013, and the interview results from the participants. This study finds that there are two meaning construction emerged from theheadlines. Those are "women should not be fat" and "physical beauty is full ofrisk". This study also found that there are two female stereotype interpreted by thereaders of "Cant iq" tabloid; "women should be slim and apply make up" and"women should be attractive to men". Those utterances reflect patriarchal, sincewomen are considered as a second sex and their bodies are treated as an object. The participants believe it can give social impacts to the society and determinewhat is the construction of female beauty. The readers and society will finallyaccept the idea saying that beauty is equal to having slim body figure, applyingmake up, and having cosmetics procedures to look attractive. The writer suggests that the next writer will also cover up socioculturalpractice by using case study because it is important to use participants point ofview as a part of the society since CDA is related with language as a form ofsocial practice. Keywords: female stereotype, patriarchal society, Critical Discourse Analysis(CDA)
