Abstract

Keywords: Address Terms, Orang Rimba, Bahasa Rimba.There are many ethnic groups in Indonesia which use specific languages. One of them is Suku Anak Dalam or called Orang Rimba. Suku Anak Dalam is a semi nomadic ethnic group living in National Park of Bukit Dua Belas, Jambi. They use Bahasa Rimba to communicate to each other. In Bahasa Rimba to address someone is the most important things to be considered. Bahasa Rimba has some variations and also has some social functions. The writer conducted a study about address terms used by Suku Anak Dalam by using Kridalaksana classification of address terms and Wardhaugh’s theory on the function of address terms. This study focuses on two problems: (1) What are the address terms used by Suku Anak Dalam, (2) What are the functions of address terms used by Suku Anak Dalam.This study uses qualitative approach to describe the address terms used in Bahasa Rimba and answer the problems. There are two types of data employed in this study, namely primary and secondary data. They are in the form of transcription of the observation result and in the form of transcription of interview result. Moreover, this study is a qualitative research because the writer only analyzed the data without any statistical number.This research finds 28 address terms used by Suku Anak Dalam which are classified into four categories; 4 terms in second personal pronouns, such as diria, mikae, senamo and urangmeru; 8 terms in kinship terms, such as induk, bepak, kakok, nenek jenton; 4 terms in title and rank categories, such as temenggung, bepak kepala adat, ibu guru; and also 12 terms in other categories, such as guding, bebet, kinde, waris and jenang. Furthermore, address terms used by Suku Anak Dalam has some social functions such as to show politeness, to show intimacy, to show solidarity, and to maintain social status.To summarize, address terms used by Suku Anak Dalam has some variations, by the title or rank, sex, age, etc. The address terms are used to address their family, their neighbor, the people around, their friends, their teacher, the people who already passed away, and even the stranger. The function of the address terms that is found in this study are to show politeness, intimacy, solidarity, and also to maintain social status. The writer also hopes that this study can provide better and deeper explanation especially on address terms in Bahasa Rimba. The writer suggests the next researchers who want to conduct a research about Bahasa Rimba focusing on different linguistic aspects such as, semantic,syntax, pragmatic, etc. for their research, so that their study is different and unique.

Keywords: Semiotics, Codes, Connotative Meaning, Three (3) provider, Advertisement.This study analyzes the codes and connotative meaning in Three (3) provider advertisement kebebasan episode. Three (3) provider is one of provider which is distributed in Indonesia. In this research, the writer analyzed the codes and connotative meaning used in Three (3) Provider in order to understand the deeper meaning of this advertisement. The research problems are: 1) What kind of codes used in Three (3) Provider kebebasan episode, 2) What are the connotative meaning found in Three (3) provider kebebasan episode. The main theory used in this study are tripartite framework from Chandler (2007) and the order of signification from Barthes (1957).This study uses qualitative approach since the writer tries to analyze the visual and verbal elements of Three (3) Provider advertisement kebebasan episode. The data of the study are video advertisement containing codes and connotative in Three (3) Provider advertisement kebebasan episode.The results of this study reveal that Three (3) provider advertisement kebebasan episode contains codes and connotative meaning to deliver message about freedom in society and insinuate other provider implicitly at the same time. Three codes proposed by Chandler are applied in the advertisement. The codes which are found are social codes (verbal language, bodily codes, commodity codes); textual codes (genre, rhetorical and stylistic code; mass media code) and interpretative codes (perceptual code). In the finding, all of the scenes of Three (3) Provider advertisements kebebasan episode have connotative meanings because all of them contain both images and utterances that have hidden messages.To sum up, Three (3) provider uses codes and connotative meaning to deliver the deeper message about freedom in society and insinuate other provider implicitly. Further, the readers can get additional information related to the codes and connotative meaning. The writer suggests for the next researchers who are interested in the semiotics to take data from other sources like radio, newspaper, magazine, advertisement poster or novel poster. The future researcher can use theories from other experts as well.

Abstract

Keywords: Divergent, Feminism, Gender, Women Negative Stereotypes.Gender is social and cultural construction about the differences of the roles and opportunities between men and women which occur in society. Gender often causes inequality between man and woman which usually disadvantages woman because of the negative stereotypes that exist in the society. The writer conducted a study on Divergent novel to analyze the portrayal of female characters countering negative stereotypes that exist in their society.Sociological approach is used in this research related with the context in the society. Feminism theory is applied in this study to analyze the data which mainly about the struggle of female characters in the society.This study reveals that the female characters in the Divergent novel do not fit the negative stereotypes that are labelled on them. The portrayal of women characters are considered as the picture of strong, brave, and intelligent women who has important contribution to the society. The women characters proves that they have courage and bravery, for example they can make decision over themselves and willing to sacrifice their life for others whom they love. Second, the women characters are depicted as brilliant which makes men feels threatened and intimidated. Third, the women characters depicted has physically, mentally,and emotionally strong that makes men feels threatened and the last, the women characters depicted as having important role to contribute to the social development by helping others.In conclusion, the women characters in this novel prove that women do not fit the stereotypes that are attributed by the society. In this novel, the women characters are considered as the portrayal of strong, brave, and intelligent women who also has important contribution to the society.The writer suggests the next researchers to use different approach or theories such as Psychology or Marxism to analyze the novel. The first theory can be used to understand the characters and their psychological development. Meanwhile the second theory can be used to observe the social class struggles within the society in the novel.
