Abstract

This study aims to investigate the prevalence of plagiarism among university students and identify the specific types of plagiarism that are most commonly committed in their written work. To examine the extent of plagiarism among university students, the present study employed a textual analysis approach and utilized the iThenticate, a professional and subscription-based plagiarism checker. A sample of 39 participants, all students from an intact class, were recruited for the study and they each independently composed argumentative essays. The essays were subjected to analysis using iThenticate to determine the prevalence of plagiarized content and manual analysis was subsequently performed to validate the results obtained from iThenticate and classify the types of plagiarism present in the essays. The results reveal that the students' essays contained a relatively low level of plagiarized content, comprising only 9.87% of the total text. The most prevalent form of plagiarism detected was mosaic plagiarism, with 39 cases identified. This was followed by verbatim plagiarism, with 16 cases identified. The findings of this research suggest that the students may have difficulty dealing with mosaic plagiarism and may require comprehensive training on proper paraphrasing techniques.

Abstract

Language as an embodiment of the human mind has a relationship with the field of psychology. The phenomenon of families who speak Sundanese but prefer to teach Indonesian and foreign languages to their children is what inspired this research. If left unchecked, there will be a shift and the potential to cause the extinction of the Sundanese language. This study aims to describe the phenomenon of Sundanese-speaking families who choose to teach Indonesian and other languages to their children, resulting in widespread adoption of Indonesian and foreign languages in the family. This research method is qualitative with interview and observation approach. There are five children from five different schools. Each child was treated by giving readings in the form of bilingual picture story books. Researchers also interviewed each child. The test was carried out for three times, namely pre-test, cycle 1, and cycle 2. The test results showed that giving readings with bilingual picture story books could increase the mastery of Sundanese vocabulary in the five children as respondents. According to the findings of this study, treatment with bilingual picture story books can preserve Sundanese in children and lead to an increase in Sundanese speakers from an early age.

In the 2013 curriculum, English is not a compulsory subject in primary schools. The corpus consists of 18 descriptive texts written by junior high school students in Yogyakarta and analyzed using lextutor, a web concordance English v.9 available on the internet. The results of the analysis reveal that descriptive texts have low, but very likely proper, average ratio on lexical variation, lexical density, and lexical sophistication considering their English proficiency level. It should be noted that the students were those of grade 7.

This descriptive qualitative study was conducted to analyze the features of teacher talk uttered by a pre-service English teacher during a microteaching. The subject of the study was Karen (pseudonym), a purposefully selected pre-service teacher who was conducting a 35-minute microteaching as a part of assessment on Microteaching course in one teacher training institution in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in the academic year of 2021/2022. The data in the form of teacher talk’ utterances were collected through Karen’s video-recorded microteaching. The data were analyzed deductively based on FLINT’s analysis model on features of teacher talk. The findings have shown that Karen’s teacher talk aligned with direct and indirect influence. Interestingly, of the features under FLINT system, Karen’s talks did not indicate the use of teacher talk to make requests to students during the learning process. Conclusions and implications are drawn for future directions on studies on classroom analysis and teacher talk.
