Abstract

According to 2013 curriculum, the English learning goal is to develop the students’ potential to have the communicative competence in interpersonal, transactional, and functional in written and spoken form. However, according to the preliminary study at Islamic Senior High School Nurul Wathan Pelangiran, the students have difficulties in reaching the passing grades of English; 75. They did not know the appropriate vocabularies while speaking and they often failed to pronounce some words properly. These problems appear to be in educational system where the students have learnt English speaking since the elementary school, but their ability to speak is still low. This research was aimed to find out the students’ speaking abillity of telling historical experience at tenth grade in English Classroom and to know the most dominant component of students’ speaking ability of telling experience at tenth grade of MA Nurul Wathan Pelangiran. This research is a descriptive quantitative research and in collecting the data, the instrument was speaking test. The sample was the total population from social class. The researchers found that the mean score of students’ speaking ability of telling historical experience is 52.50, and categorized as less level. The most dominant component of students’ speaking ability is vocabulary with mean score 2.86 or 57.2%. Students’ speaking is mostly  on less level. So the students need to prepare and practice more about speaking. They often pause their speaking during the test, or the students did find it difficult to deal with vocabularies related to historical experience.

This research consisted of two formulations of the problem: how are the cultural contents disseminated in the English textbook entitled ‘English in Focus for Grade VIII (SMP/MTs), and what are the cultural contents disseminated in the English textbook. The objectives of this research are to know about how the cultural contents are disseminated in the English textbook and what are the cultural contents disseminated in the English textbook. The data of the research were collected from reading passages and also pictures in the English Textbook which was published by National Education Department. This research is a descriptive qualitative but the element of quantitative in the form of how the data are counted in a percentage has also been used. In order to know what cultural contents are disseminated in the English Textbook, the cultural contents were categorized into the source or local culture, the target culture, and the international culture (Cortazzi & Jin, 1999). Moreover, in order to know how the cultural contents were disseminated in the English Textbook, the cultural contents were categorized into four senses; the aesthetic sense, the sociological sense, the semantic sense, and the pragmatic sense (Adaskou, Britten & Fahsi, 1990).The research found that local or source culture was predominant in the textbook. The cultural contents of (43.75%) referred to the local culture, (40.62%) referred to the international culture, and (21.87%) referred to the target culture. Additionally, in order to know how the cultural contents are disseminated in textbook, the research found that generally the cultural contents were disseminated by the aesthetic sense (46.15%), the sociological sense (30.76%), and the pragmatic sense (23.07%), while the semantic sense was not found. Based on the findings, it could be concluded that the contents of English textbook in focus for grade VIII has already successfully achieved the national education goal. National characters or national culture should be input in education field.

In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire for self assessment and oral test for speaking ability. From the data analysis which had been done by using SPSS 20.0 version, it could be seen that there was a significant correlation between self assessment and speaking ability. It could be shown that the probability of score sig.t is 0.000, smaller than the significant alpha of 0.05 (sig.t < 0.05). It means that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. In other words, there is a significant correlation between self assessment and speaking ability.

Abstract

This research was carried out to find out the categories of students’ interest in reading and reading comprehension and the effect of using SQ4R Technique on their reading interest and reading comprehension at SMAN 1 Pangkalan Kuras Pelalawan. It was done based on a quasi-experimental design that requires a pre-test and post-test for a treated and comparison group. Sample of this research consisted of 76 students that were taken from two classes, namely Class XI IPS 1 as an experimental class (treated group) and Class XI IPS 2 as a control class (comparison group). Data were collected by using and questionnaire and reading comprehension test. SQ4R Technique was used as the treatment for the experimental group. The results indicated that there is a significant effect of implementing the treatment on students’ reading interest in the experimental group. T-test result was -3.4 and its df was 37, by comparing the significant value. If the probability value is > 0.05, the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted. If the probability value < 0.05, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Because the p-value was 0.002<0.05, thus, Ha is accepted while H0 is rejected. In addition, there is a significant effect of using SQ4R technique on the students’ reading comprehension. The t-test result was -6273 and its df was 37, by comparing the significant value. If the probability value is > 0.05, H0 is accepted and Ha is rejected. If the probability value is < 0.05, Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. Because the p-value was 0.000 < 0.05, thus, Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected.
