Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels as a result of insufficiency of insulin function. Xanton a bioactive compound in the mangosteen rind is convinced to possess antidiabetic effects. There for, in this study effect of juice mangosteen rind (Garcinia mangostana L.) on blood sugar levels, and histological features of pancreatic rats with the induction of streptozotocin was investigated. This research using experimental rats species of Rattus norvegicus Wistar strain male. Rats were divided into 3 groups, the first group was the control without any treatments, group II was sick rat group, and group III was therapy rat group treated with juice mangosteen rind (a dose of 110 mg/kg body weight) by sonde for 2 consecutive weeks. Then, blood sugar levels of all rat groups were measured along with observation of their pancreatic histological. The results showed that the blood sugar level in therapy rat group (104.7 ± 10.9 mg/dL) is not significantly different with that of rat control group (108.5 ± 19.5 mg/dL), revealing effectiveness of therapy. Conservely, blood sugar level remained high in sick rat group (163.8 ± 16.2 mg/dL). Juice mangosteen rind can improve conditions of the pancreatic histology rat with the induction of streptozotocin.

Abstract

Methyl mercury (MeHg) has the highest toxicity among the derivative of the organic mercury compounds. Rate of accumulation of MeHg in the body is very high because it is soluble in lipids. The ability of methyl mercury binds to proteins in the body causing MeHg to penetrate the blood-brain barrier easily, so that it can quickly disrupt the central nervous system and speed up nerve cell damage. This paper reported the effect of methyl mercury on the number of microglia cells and expression of iNOS in the brains of Rattus norvegicus. In this study, rats were divided into two groups: a control group with no exposure of MeHg and groups of rats exposed with MeHg at a dose of 0.6 mg/kg BW/day given orally for 21 days. Number of microglia cells is investigated using silver nitrate staining method and iNOS expression is determined by immunohistochemistry methods. The results showed that exposure with MeHg in a dose of 0.6 mg/kgBW can increase the number of microglia cells and iNOS expression respectively as mush as 151.63% and 918.08% . Keyword: Methyl mercury, microglia, brain, iNOS, immunohistochemistry

Abstract

Adsorption ofheavy metals Pb and Custudies have been carried out usinga compost of plant water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes). First steps of the compostingis fermenting fresh hyacinth plants that have been enumeratedwithmolasses and water. Once formed, the compost is used as an adsorbent for the adsorption of heavy metals Pb and Cu. After that process, the water hyacinth compost have been characterized to determine the humic acid content, as well as the functional group content of heavy metals Pb and Cu. Determination of general conditions on the adsorption of Pb and Cu performed with adsorbent mass variations, variations in pH and the concentration variation and studying adsorption isotherm. The results showed that the adsorption of Pb in optimum condition occurs in adsorbentmass of 1.2 g with pH 5. As for the adsorption of Cu on the optimum conditions occur in the adsorbent mass of 0.8 g at pH 6. Results also able to adsorb up to 95.13% Pb andup to 91.42% Cu. Pb and Cu adsorption using adsorbents of water hyacinth compost more models to follow Langmuir than Freundlich models.

Abstract

This study is aimed to improve the preparation of uselful synthetic block (4R,5R,E)-methyl 5-(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy)-4-hydroxyhepta-2,6-dienoate (1). This intermediate was used in the synthesis of (+)-Cladospolide D. The strategy developed by Voigtritter et al. was adopted to exploit the acceleration effect of copper (I) iodide. This compound was prepared from D-mannitol-derived dienediol (2) coupled with methyl acrylate through olefin cross-metathesis reaction in various conditions. It was found that performing the reaction in the presence of 3 mol% of CuI in refluxing diethyl ether gave the product up to 75% of yield with lower catalyst loading, i.e.: 2 mol%.

Abstract

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) membrane based coated wire oxalate ion selective electrode has been developed by using chitosan. The results showed the optimum composition of the membrane was chitosan: aliquat 336: PVC: DBP = 4:1:33:62 (% weight). The electrode showed Nernstian response, Nernst factor 29.90 mV/decade of concentration, linier concentration range of 1x10-5 - 1x10-1 M, detection limit of 2.56 x10-6 M, response time of 30 second, and life time of 42 days. ISE’s performance worked well in pH range of 5-7 and temperature of 25-50 oC. Validation test showed no significant difference (t test) with the SSA method so that the potentiometric method could be used as an alternative method for determining urinary oxalate.
