Abstract

This study examines the factors that determine where Korean seniors choose to travel. Using iterated principal factor analysis with a varimax rotation analysis technique, five preference factors in choice oftravel destination were revealed: tourism environment, events, feeling, differentiation, and culture. Duncan's multiple range test was then applied to examine the relative preference level of each of these factors in determining destination choice. The results indicate that Korean seniors ' choice of travel destination varies between different sets of sociodemographic and travel characteristics. This information can be used by the tourist industry as a tool to aid decision making about tourism policy and marketing activities and to help determine priority of assignments aimed at improving tourist supply.

Abstract

Climate change, an increasingly apparent phenomena, has the potential to affect the tourism industry. This exploratory paper was created to (1) look at the possible impacts of climate change, particularly sea-level rise, on a selected Manila-Bay area hotel; (2) explore possible changes in the operational systems of the selected hotel and propose changes into these systems; and (3) propose possible monitoring programs and policies aimed at mitigating the impact of climate change, particularly in the most vulnerable areas to climate change like the Philippines. The researcher employed a case-study method for this exploratory research. Data were then analyzed using the Climate Lens Model, in conjunction with the systems model. It was found out that storm surges, one of the indirect impacts of climate change caused by stronger typhoons, brought about changes in the operational system of the hotel. Yet, even if there were measures undertaken, these measures were only short-term, which in a climate change standpoint is inadequate due to the fact that climate change is very dynamic. It was recommended that the hotel establishment take into account a diverse range of technological, managerial, educational, policy and behavioral adaptations to deal with climate variability, based on the recommendation set by the Davos Declaration of the UNWTO.

Abstract

This paper is an exploratory study with the aim to examine travel motivation, travel difficulty and destination preference among the disabled community in Kuala Lumpur. A questionnaire was derived from focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and literature review. The questionnaires were distributed using convenience sampling and 176 of them returned and analyzed. The majority of respondents are young, pre-dominantly male and unemployed. They do take holidays especially to domestic destinations and most times accompanied by friends and family members. Disabled people face considerable difficulty especially in terms of accessibility and finance. The main travel motivations are to see new places and to relax, and the most preferred destination is nature. The result reveals significant relationships between the components of destination preference with the components of travel motivation and travel difficulty. It is proposed that both government and society should intensify the present effort to raise the living standard of disabled people, to improve general accessibility, and to increase public awareness of disabled people’s equal status in the society. The disabled themselves also should be out there in the public scene to further justify their needs of accessible facilities and infrastructure.

Abstract

Climate change is one of the most important global environmental challenge facing humanity. Global tourism is deeply influenced by global climate change. This paper aims to study the impacts of climate change on global tourism in general and in selected countries and island nations. The increasing incidence of natural disasters is the major manifestation of climate change. Outbreak of epidemics is also considered as a consequence of climate change. These disasters pose great danger and cause severe damage to the basic infrastructure which supports tourism related activities. How global tourism is influenced by major natural disasters will be examined. Melting glaciers and rising sea levels are posing great challenge to global tourism as they are impacting several countries and islands. This aspect will also be examined. Climate change is impacting the biodiversity, which is the basic resource for tourism. Some of the instances of impacts of climate change on biodiversity and tourism will also be provided. Several countries and island nations have drawn up strategies to cope with climate change and are also implementing them. This includes the strategies to cope with climate induced disasters and protecting the tourism related infrastructure.

Abstract

This study reports an assessment of brand loyalty across the origin of the brand in the hotel industry. This study endeavours to extend recent advances in services marketing theory on brand loyalty to the international and domestic brand level of analysis. Brand loyalty is proposed to consist of three dimensions (attitudinal loyalty, conative loyalty and behavioural loyalty) with service quality, perceived value, customer satisfaction, and brand image as its determinants. The results, drawn from sample of four-star hotels, support the proposed brand loyalty model across international and domestic hotels. Service quality, perceived value, and customer satisfaction are important antecedents of brand loyalty though brand image has a strengthening role in these three loyalty determinants in both international and domestic hotels. Overall, the effects of these determinants on brand loyalty differ between international and domestic hotels.

Abstract

This study attempts to develop a tourist relationship management (TRM) framework by assimilating assorted dimensions. The basic foundation of the TRM framework will be rested on customer relationship management (CRM) model with justified addition of dimensions compatible to tourism dynamics. Further to this the study examines the intervening effects of modified relationship dimensions on service quality perception-tourist satisfaction-destination loyalty link. The study confirmed convergence of dimensions to justify TRM framework with adequate internal reliability and validity of the scale and further revealed that perceived tourist service quality; tourist satisfaction and destination loyalty can be colinked under the intervening effects of TRM dimensional performance. The default model also holds good to lend support to the theoretical findings.

Abstract

Traditionally within the developed western world, decisions concerning the preservation of heritage buildings and sites have been primarily based upon economic measurement and criteria. It is recognised that heritage assets offer many experiential qualities and hold importance to the wider lives of individuals; specifically, tourists and host communities imbue the sites with their own personal values and subjective significance. They seek personal meaning and connection through their experiences with heritage. In this way, the accountability of heritage building preservation can be viewed in greater terms than solely their economic value. Despite this recognition, there remains a lack of attention in previous heritage tourism studies towards exploring the personal meaning and experiential qualities of heritage buildings, with the exception of the literature focusing on buildings of religious significance. Further, the spiritual value of heritage has been explored largely within the context of sites of religious significance; spirituality though is a broader, more encompassing concept than religion. This paper explores the spiritual value ascribed by international tourists to heritage buildings within a particular region of New Zealand: Hawke’s Bay. Sixty-six photograph-supported interviews conducted with international tourists found that heritage buildings can hold deep ‘spiritual’ meaning to individuals. Rather than any religious significance, findings showed that heritage buildings render the townscape an experiential ‘spiritual’ space filled with emotion, mindfulness, engagement and personal meaning. The paper concludes that this finding has important implications for the way in which heritage buildings are promoted, developed and preserved within a destination townscape.

Abstract

Despite some physical similarities with the typology of gated housings developing in Metropolitan of Jakarta, there is uniqueness in gated housings growing in Bandung, especially in its peri-urban area. The uniqueness is the development of tourism activities inside those gated housing. A number of luxury residential complexes with gated characteristics in the peri-urban areas of Bandung have transformed into tourism areas. This phenomenon is interesting to study given the contrasted characteristics between gated housing and tourism. this paper discusses a number of case studies on tourism activities and facilities developing inside gated housings in peri-urban of Bandung. The research method used qualitative descriptive analysis and typo-morphology analysis. The study results have shown a number of unique typo-morphology of tourism facilities inside gated housings in the peri-urban area of Bandung as well as a number of their physical and operational characteristics differences from other tourism facilities in general. Gated housing itself is closely related to segregation. The results of this study have also indicated that the presence of tourism activities in gated housings as well as a number of local creative strategies applied by the management of the tourism facilities could become one of the solutions to minimize the extent of segregation posed by the gated housings and to improve the physical quality of the gated housing where the tourism facilities are located. Keywords: gated housing; peri-urban of Bandung; typology; transformation; tourism

Abstract

The paper has broadly made an attempt to examine the growth and challenges faced by the tourism sector in Goa, a destination in India; during the last one decade.Of late, the number of tourists visiting the state is more than twice the population of the state. Empirical evidence also reveals an improvement in the growth of tourists’ arrival but with wide fluctuation over the years. However, there are emerging issues of concern including the saturation of the carrying capacity of the state and the scope to sustain the growth momentum in the long run. Given the low geographical area and stiff competition among the destination managers to woo quality tourists, the state needs to be fully aware of their expectations and accordingly design the tourism policy.
