Abstract

Elephant dung is a source of methane gas, which the gas is the main contributor to greenhouse gas if not used as fuel. Wild elephants use grass leaves as their feed, but in Ragunan Wildlife Park, elephants are fed also with a combination of elephant grass, sweet potatoes, maize, and bananas, which aim to meet immediate nutritional needs and ensure their health. Therefore, this study examined the biogas production of elephant feces associated with the feed given. The purpose of this study is to investigate the contribution of biogas that is emitted from the elephant feces as a result of two kinds of feed, which were elephant grass and combination of elephant grass, sweet potatoes, maize, and bananas. Previously, the elephants were acclimatized for 4 days with the two types of feed. Fermentation of the feces was conducted by using simple fermenters by volume of 3.42 L for 28 days and performed measurements of temperature, pH, concentration of ammonia, concentration of volatile fatty acids, substrate degradation and production of biogas. The result showed that the composition of feed affects the physico-chemical characteristics of the feces, production of ammonia and volatile fatty acids, substrate degradation and production of biogas.  The feces of Sumatran elephant fed with elephant grasses has higher potential for decomposition to mineralization into biogas and produce a higher proportion of methane gas carbon dioxide, than those fed with the combinated feed. This result needs to be a concern because with the fiber-rich feed like in their natural habitats, elephants have the potential to emit higher gas emissions. Therefore the biogas released from the elephant feces or other animals should be processed and utilized to meet the energy needs in the wildlife park itself.

Abstract

Indonesian Sustainability Palm Oil (ISPO) is requirement for palm oil private business in the effort to preserve the environment, increase economic activities, and social activities of the community. The environmental management conducted by the company is analyzed by qualitative descriptive approach by comparing the condition of management before and after the implementation of ISPO. Measurement of the influence of CSR program as implementation in ISPO to the changing socio-economic condition of the community is done by quantitative approach with simple linear regression statistic analysis method. This study aims, first to analyze eh impacts of ISPO adoption in improving the environmental management performances of the company, second to analyze the influence of CSR program to the socio-economic condition of the community. ISPO implementation impacts on; first, environmental benefits obtained by the company include; (1) increase discharge and quality of processed wastewater for Land Application, (2) reduce of CO2 emissions 2.134.299 tons/year; (3) reduce of air emission and noise level in plant area; (4) reduce case of land fires and work accidents, (5) improve groundwater quality and Kandis river water quality, (6) improve of worker's capability and welfare. Second, the economic benefits obtained by the company, including; (1) increase of CPO production by 827 tons/year, and PKO production by 75 tons/year, (2) cost savings IDR 98.228.703/year from IPAL management improvements, and (3) Increase of company's revenue from selling hazardous waste to third party by IDR 343.734.000/year. Third, CSR program positively increase of community's income, education improvement of community family member, and better public perception to company.

Abstract

Cement production was a process that requires huge thermal energy and produces high greenhouse gas emissions. Co-processing or utilising alternative materials and alternative fuels for the combustion process in kiln was a solution to meet energy needs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the cement industry. This study aimed to analyze input, output, environmental impacts of cement production and calculate CO2-eq reduction from the system used alternative fuels on co-processing. The method used to determine differences and calculate CO2-eq reduction due to co-processing was life cycle assessment (LCA) and system approach. Based on the results of the LCA, the case 1 that used 100% coal energy required 3.50 GJ/ton-cement, 126 kWh/ton-cement, 2.19 L-diesel-oil/ton of cement and emited 0.84 ton-CO2-eq/ton-cement. Case 2 that had been substituted alternative fuels (saw dust) required 3.03 GJ per ton of cement, 118 kWh per ton of cement, 1.44 L diesel oil per ton of cement and emited 0.92 ton-CO2-eq per ton of cement. The results of global warming impact of  case 2 was higher than case 1. The assumption of  climate neutral made reduction global warming impact of case 2 by 14.65% and decrease CO2 emissions annually in plant by 71,601 tons CO2/year.  This result show that utilization of saw dust as biomass of climate neutral can be applied as an input for overall company specific emissions calculation to meet government regulation.

Abstract

Since 2006, Ministry of Environment has promote environmental education, within the framework of a program for education for sustainable development to raise enviromental knowledge and awareness called Adiwiyata. Adiwiyata program runs on a voluntary and formal school in Indonesia. The Adiwiyata school program aims to encourage schools to adopt behaviours that are respectful towards the environment. As a prize of appreciation, the Ministry of Environment gives Adiwiyata awards to a schools that has succeed to met the criteria of green school environment. In 2014, Depok City government proposed nine schools to become National Adiwiyata School, but only six schools has pass the verification of healthy, clean, and beautiful encvironment and was awarded National Adiwiyata thropy and certificate. The study was conducted in order to test the level of knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of the school community that implemented Adiwiyata program, as well as the effectiveness of the program is to improve the knowledge and awaraness through policy insight, implementation of environmental based curriculum, environmental participatory based activity, and sustainable management of supporting facilitie, to support the responsible for the protection and management of environment. The study concluded that Adiwiyata program evident effective to change the green behaviors of school community.

Abstract

Land use change is the cause of carbon loss from land. The loss of this carbon becomes a source of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere that can cause global warming. Intensive land use and land cover occurred in Kabupaten Banyuasin from 2004-2014. The purpose of this study. to create carbon balance, emissions and sequestration of CO2 during the period of 2004 - 2014 in Banyuasin Regency caused by land use change and land cover change. The method used to create carbon balance using land use change matrix, carbon calculation of each carbon pool by allometric method, destructive sample and organic C by Walkley and Black method. Stock diference method for analysis of changes in carbon storage, CO2 emissions and CO2 sequestration. The results of this study indicate that the 2004-2014 carbon balance in Banyuasin Regency is negative, with a carbon loss of 22,033,277 tons with an average annual carbon loss of 2,203,327 tons. CO2 sequestration of 29,298,966 tons and CO2 emissions 118,044,141 tons, while net emissions 88,745,175 tons. Average net CO2 emissions from above ground carbon pools, carbon necromassa pools, litter carbon pools and underground carbon pools are 7 tonnes ha-1 year-1, whereas CO2 emissions from organic soil C 0.61 tonnes ha- 1 year-1. The largest contributor of CO2 emissions in Banyuasin Regency are sequentially caused by changes in peat swamp forests, secondary mangrove forests, primary mangrove forests and secondary swamp forests. While the source of sequestration is the change of monoculture rubber peat, oil palm, rubber monoculture and shrubs.
