Abstract

Dacus cucurbitae ( Diptera: Trypetidae) attacks on cucumber and peria fruits wrapped at cherelle stage. The fruit flies were important pests of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L) and peria (Memordica charantia L.). The flies attacked fruits by laying egg on the fruit surface and their developing immatures caused serious damages from the inside. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of the fruit wrapping at cherelle stage on fruit fly infestation on cucumber or peria fruits. The experiment was conducted in villages of Terbanggi Besar (Central Lampung) and Jati Agung (South Lampung) during October—November 2001. A set of cherelle stage fruits, i.e. those just shed off their florescence, were wrapped using plastic bags while another set of adjacent fruits were left unwrapped. Fruits (treated or untreated) were taken soon after they fell off or at their normal harvest time, whichever came first, then were weighed and incubated in the laboratory to observe the fruit fly emergence. The results showed that fruit wrapping significantly reduced the fruit fly infestation and suppressed the fruit fly population on cucumber or peria fruits. The wrapped fruits weighed more than unwrapped fruits

Abstract

Inventory of seed-borne microorganisms on paddy from District of Talang Padang, Tanggamus Lampung. This study was conducted to inventory microorganisms that infected or contaminated paddy seeds from District of Talang Padang, Lampung. Paddy seed samples were obtained by stratified random sampling method. Six villages were chosen from 28 villages, with six farmers from each village. From each farmer were collected 30 gram paddy seeds. Seventy grams seeds used as the work sample in seed health testing were obtained from 1080 gram of the composite sample. Testing method that been used were blotter test and agar test, then followed by growing-on test. Bacteria and seven genera of fungi were found to be associated with paddy seeds from this study. They were Alternaria, Fusarium. Aspergillus, Curvularia, Mucor, Rhizopus and Penicillium. Virus was not obtained in this study.

Abstract

Termite population on black pepper plantation in Way Kanan, Lampung. This survey conducted from July to August 2002 was aimed to document the abundance and the diversity of termites at two locations of black pepper plantation with different soil covers at Way Kanan District, Lampung. The first location (Tiuhbalak) was practically bare (less weeds and more litter) while the second location (Sukarame) was more covered (more weeds and less litter). Two termite transects were set at each location. Each transect, comprised of 20 sections of 5 m x 2 m, was laid down in an oblique direction relative to the black pepper plant row. Termites were collected by soil scrapping, wood dismantling, and/or circum-digging of the soil around the plants by two collectors in 30 minutes/section. Termite specimens (mainly soldier caste) were conserved into vial containing 70% of ethanol for identification. Variables being observed included termite’s (1) relative abundance, (2) distribution, (3) number, and (4) biomass. The relative abundance and distribution between locations were compared using F-test at 5% level of significance. Results showed that the termites recovered from 7.5 finds (Tiuhbalak) and 10 finds (Sukarame) were Macrotermes gilvus, Microtermes obesi, Nasutitermes havilandi, Havilanditermes sp., Schedorhinotermes medioobscurus, and Cryptotermes sp.. Termites that were found in association with the black pepper plants were M. gilvus (in part) and Cryptotermes sp., while the other M. gilvus, M. obesi, N. havilandi, Havilanditermes sp., and S. medioobscurus were found from their sub-terranean nests close to the plants. Higher termite number and biomass (dominated by M. gilvus) were recovered from Tiuhbalak, while higher termite diversity was observed from Sukarame.

Abstract

Migratory locust (Locusta migratoria manilensis Meyen) : Preliminary facts and analyzes on the population outbreaks in Lampung Province. The migratory locust (locally known as belalang kembara), Locusta migratoria manilensis Meyen (Orthoptera: Acrididae), has become a major insect pest in Lampung in recent years since its outbreak in 1998. Thousand hectares of agricultural fields were severely destroyed by the locust populations during the course of the outbreak. Local as well as national government were caught in surprised by the population upsurge with little information and technology available for controlling the pest. First presence of locust population was recorded in Kecamatan Pakuan Ratu in 1990. Area damage in the first year was ca. 60 ha. The population grew steadily over the years and reached its peak in April-May of 1998 when thousands of corn and rice fields were severely damaged. Country roads and fields were filled with millions of locust nymphs. Records of locust attacks during preliminary outbreaks from 1990 to 1998 also indicated that the insect started its outbreak from the same areas during those years, i.e. North Lampung District and northern Tulang Bawang District (two of the outmost northern of Lampung Province). Insect pest control experts were very concerned that the locust has established its populations in the region and could cause significant loss in the upcoming years. Control strategy and techniques based on the insect biology and population dynamics, therefore, should be explored and developed to manage future outbreaks. This paper discusses and analyzes preliminary facts and information on the migratory locust and possible strategies that could be implemented for managing the locust.

Abstract

Abstract

Response of various soybean genotipes against cowpea mild mottle virus (CPMMV) infection. The green house experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of CPMMV infection on growth and yield of various soybean varieties. Treatments were arranged in completely randomized block design in split plot experiment. Mainplots were virus-inoculated and uninoculated plants; subplots were eight soybean varieties: Wilis, Orba, MLG 2521, Taichung, B 3570, Dieng, Tidar, and Pangrango. The results of this experiment showed that CPMMV infection decreased vegetative growth and yield of soybean plant. The decrease of dry weigth of soybean plant proved that CPMMV infection inhibited the vegetative growth. Taichung variety susceptible to CPMMV was indicated by significant reduction of the growth and yield. B3570 line tolerance to CPMMV infection was proved by lower reduction of the yield.
