Abstract

Tulisan ini membahas bagaimana Cooperative Learning (pembelajaran kooperatif) menjadi sumber pemerolehan bahasa Inggris sebagai kedua/asing, ketrampilan sosial dan keberhasilan akademik. Dari berbagai hasil penelitian telah dibuktikan bahwa Cooperative Learning merupakan salah satu alternatif pendekatan pembelajaran yang dapat mengembangkan tidak saja pada kemampuan akademik, dan psikomotor untuk mengembangkan ketrampilan berbahasa namun juga kemampuan affektif yang berhubungan dengan ketrampilan sosial dalam berinteraksi dengan teman sejawat. Selain itu secara ringkas dibahas bagaimana hubungan cooperative learning dengan teori-teori pemerolehan bahasa kedua/asing, bagaimana prinsip-prinsip cooperative learning dan beberapa teknik serta rencana pembelajaran bahasa Inggris berdasarkan cooperative learning. Kata kunci: Cooperative Learning, second language acquisition.

Abstract

Krisis pada aspek sosial cukup memprihatinkan. Rendahnya nilai-nilai sosial seperti kurangnya loyalitas/ pengabdian, kurang disiplin, kurang empati terhadap masalah sosial, kurang efektif berkomunikasi adalah sebagian besar penyebabnya. Hal itu menunjukkan adanya permasalahan pribadi dan sosial di kalangan masyarakat baik yang berpendidikan tinggi maupun rendah. Sikap-sikap individualistis, egoistis, acuh tak acuh, kurangnya rasa tanggung jawab, malas berkomunikasi dan berinteraksi atau rendahnya empati merupakan fenomena yang menunjukkan adanya kehampaan nilai sosial dan komunikasi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Sesungguhnya dalam menghadapi kondisi yang demikian, pendidikan dapat memberikan kontribusi yang cukup besar. Pendidikan dapat memberikan kontribuasi dalam mengatasi masalah komunikasi dan masalah sosial. Strategi Peer interaction di kelas memiliki kelebihan dibandingkan dengan strategi pembelajaran biasa yaitu penguasaan: keterampilan sosial dan komunikasi.Kata Kunci: Pembelajaran kooperatif, nilai sosial, norma social

Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed to improve students? reading comprehension of narrative text usingpicture book, especially to improve students? ability in identifying details of story elements, and recognizing words meaning. The writer applied classroom action researchwith three cycles of meetings. The subject was the eighth grade students, in MTs Ika PGAPontianak, academic year 2016/2017. There were 20 students participated in the wholeprocesses. The data from observation checklist and field notes revealed that using picturebook improved students' reading comprehension of narrative text. Picture booksimproved students in recognizing words meaning through pre teaching the words fromthe story prior reading, and the use of picture-text relationship in contextual cluesactivity. Picture books also improved students in identifying story elements through theuse of picture sequences discussion in picture walk activity and story mapping activity.Discussing picture books also promoted students? interest in reading. The scores showedstudents? improvement in recognizing words meaning and story elements. From theresearch, the writer concluded that the use of picture book improved students? ability torecognize words meaning, identify details of story elements and improved students?interest in reading comprehension of narrative text through shared reading with picturewalk, contextual clues, and story mapping.Keywords: Picture books, Narrative text, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

AbstractThis research is aimed to investigate how the teaching poetry improved the students’ pronunciation on the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Toho in academic year 2016/2017. The research was conducted through Classroom Action Research in three cycles. The writer used observation and measurement test as techniques of collecting the data. The writer elaborated the result of observation checklist, field note and students’ assessment as tools of collecting the data in order to get the research findings. The result showed that reading poetry improved students’ pronunciation of [i:] and [æ]. Drill the pronunciation of stanza, give a list, distinguish sound and exaggerated as the strategies to improve the students’ pronunciation of [i:] and [æ]. The average score in the first cycle was 35.08, the second cycle was 46.48, and the third cycle was 70.00. The activities in reading poetry gave positive impacts to the process of teaching and learning on students’ pronunciation. The students could emphasize how to pronounce [i:] and [æ] correctly. Most of students engaged well in teaching and learning process and they were also enthusiastic in reading the poetry. The students also looked confidence in performing their reading poetry in front of the class. As a conclusion, the problems that students faced could be solved through reading poetry. Keyword: pronunciation, reading poetry, [i:] and [æ] sounds.

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this research was to improve students? speaking ability in describing place using Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique for the tenth grade students in class IPA 3 of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) 1 Pontianak. This research was a classroom action research. The result showed that the use of Think-Pair-Share technique made the students become more active in speaking activity, particularly in describing place by using English and gave positive response or feedback during teaching and learning process. Think it out in Think activity helped students to use and practice their vocabulary in terms of adjectives which relevant with the topic given. Partners? correction in Pair activity in which students were allowed to give correction of their partner?s mistakes in pronouncing English words helped them to practice their pronunciation as well to pronounce the words with better pronunciation. Turn-taking description in Share activity helped students to practice oral description by using better pronunciation, relevant adjectives and simple present tense correctly. These findings were also supported by the result of students? speaking scores in which the mean score improved from 59,1 in Cycle 1 to 72,6 in Cycle 2 then it was 79,6 in Cycle 3. In conclusion, Think-Pair-Share technique improved students? speaking ability in describing place, particularly in the aspects of pronunciation, the use of adjectives, and the use of simple present tense.Keywords: Speaking Ability, Think-Pair-Share technique, Classroom Action Research.

Abstract

AbstractThe research was set out in order to know how the implementing outdoor activities improve students’ ability in writing factual description to the year-10 students at class MIA 2 of SMAN 9 Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018. This research was conducted through Classroom Action Reseacrh (CAR) in three cycles. The subjects of this research were the tenth grade English teacher and 36 students of year-10 at class MIA 2. In collecting the data, the researcher used field note, observation checklist, and students’ writing test. The result showed that implementing outdoor activities improved students’ ability in writing factual description. Furthermore, Minds on of Five Sense Writing in outdoor activities improved students’ability of using noun phrase with adjectives, also the Action stage of Five Sense Writing in outdoor activities could improve students’ ability of using the simple present tense. Moreover, the students’ motivation was improved by implementing the the Action stage of Five Sense Writing in Outdoor Activities. The action of Five sense Writing improved the students’ enthusiasm as well as their activeness. Therefore, the writer positively recommends the teacher to implement outdoor activities as one of various techniques in teaching process, especially in teaching writing factual description.Key Words: Outdoor Activities, Factual Description, Writing.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this research is to find out the effectiveness of using categories game in teaching vocabularies on writing descriptive text. This study was conducted on seventh grade students of SMPN 14 Pontianak Timur in academic year 2016/2017. The research used a pre experimental research with one group pretest and post test. The subject of this research was VII I. The research data was collected by a test. It was analyzed by effect size formula. The findings of research showed that the students achievement on vocabularies, particular vocabularies on writing descriptive text significantly improved by using categories game. The interval between the mean score of pretest and posttest is 15.59 . It means that the interval between pretest and posttest score showed the increase after treatment conducted. Moreover, these findings were computed by t-test formula, where the t-value in this research is 6.21, compared with percentage points of the t-distribution with one tail probability (α) 0.05 on 41 number degree of freedom is 1.682. It means the t-value is higher than the percentage point of the t-distribution. The effect size obtained is 0.86 which is categoried large. Thus, the use of categories game to teach vocabularies on writing descriptive text to the students VII grade of SMPN 14 Pontianak Timur was effective.Keywords: Vocabulary, Categories game, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Absract: This research was conducted to the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Sintang in academic year 2015/2016. The aim of this research was to find out how well the use of Project-based learning in improving students? speaking skill. In conducting this research, the writer used Classroom Action Research as the method of research. The writer observed the improvement of students? speaking skill by collecting the data through observation and measurement technique. This research was implemented to 36 eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Sintang. The findings of this research showed that there was an improvement on students? speaking skill through project-based learning particularly in accuracy and fluency. In the first cycle, the students? mean score was 74.44. In the second cycle, the students? mean score was 78.06. Students? score in third cycle was 81.04. It can be concluded that the students? speaking skill taught using project-based learning was improved. Key words: Project-Based Learning, Speaking, Classroom Action Research   Abstrak: Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap siswa SMA Negeri 3 Sintang tahun ajaran 2015/2016. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat seberapa besar pengaruh project-based learning dalam meningkatan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Untuk menyelesaikan masalah ini, penulis melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas dengan menggunakan metode project-based learning yang diterapkan pada siswa. Penulis mengamati peningkatan siswa melalui teknik measurement dan observasi. Hasil dari peneliitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pada kemampuan berbicara siswa. Respon siswa menunjukkan bahwa mereka tertarik untuk belajar berbicara melalui project-based learning. Pada siklus pertama, skor rata-rata siswa adalah 74,44. Pada siklus kedua, skor rata-rata siswa adalah 78,06. Pada siklus ketiga, skor siswa meningkat menjadi 81,04. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa keterampilan berbicara siswa diajarkan menggunakan project-based learning ditingkatkan.   Kata Kunci: project-based learning, speaking, penelitian tindakan kelas

Abstract

Abstract : The purposes of conducting this research is to know whether or not Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is effective in Teaching Reading Comprehension on Narrative Text and to know how effective is the use of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) in Teaching Reading Comprehension on Narrative Text for the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015. This research was done by conducting a pre- experimental study which consists of pretest, posttest and two times of treatments.  The sample of this research is class XA and the total of the students is 40. The data had been collected by measurements techniques. The tool of data collecting was objective test. The finding of the research showed that the mean score of students? pretest was 60.27 while the posttest was 78.25. The students? achievement was increased by the different score between pretest and posttest was 17.98. The t-test was higher than the t-table (5.5 >2.045 at ? 5%). The result of the effect size (ES) was 0.87. It means that using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) in teaching reading comprehension on narrative text for the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Pontianak is categorized as highly effective with the Effect Size (ES) > 0.8     (0.87 > 0.8).   Key words : Collaborative Strategic Reading, Narrative Text   Abstract: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas pengajaran pemahaman membaca teks naratif dengan menggunakan Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) pada siswa kelas XA MAN 1 Pontianak tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Penelitian ini di lakukan dengan menerapkan pre experimental study yang terdiri dari pretest, posttest dan treatments. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XA yang berjumlah 40 siswa. Data yang di kumpulkan menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data. Alat pengumpulan data adalah objective test. Hasil analisis data menunjukan bahwa skor rata-rata dari pretest siswa adalah 60.27 sedangkan posttest adalah 78.25. Prestasi siswa meningkat dengan perbedaan skor antara pretest dan posttest 17.98. t-test lebih tinggi dari pada t-table (5.5>2.045 pada      ? 5%). Hasil Effect Size (ES) adalah 0.87. Hal tersebut menunjukan bahwasannya mengajarkan pemahaman membaca teks narrative dengan menggunakan Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) pada siswa kelas XA di MAN 1 Pontianak di kategorikan sangat effektif dengan tingkat efektivitas  (ES) > 0.8 (.87 > 0.8).   Key words : Collaborative Strategic Reading, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to investigate the most dominant internal and external factor influencing students’ low English learning achievement. To achieve the purpose of this study, a descriptive research was conducted at SMKN 2 Pontianak with the sample of this study was the eleventh grade students of XI TSM class in Academic Year 2015/2016 which was chosen by using purposive sampling technique. The findings of this research revealed that (1) Negative attitude was found to be the most dominant internal factor influencing students’ low English learning achievement with the percentage was 78,86% and classified as strong influence. (2) Of the two external factor, unsupportive school environment was found to be the most dominant one with the percentage was 62,38% and also classified as strong influence and followed by lack of family support with the percentage was 40,12% which was classified as weak. To conclude, negative attitude which was supported negatively by the unsupportive school environment had a strong negative influence to the teaching learning process which consequently resulted in students’ low achievement.   Keywords : Internal Factors, External Factors, Low Achievement   Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor internal dan eksternal yang paling dominan dalam mempengaruhi rendahnya hasil belajar siswa pada pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian ini, sebuah penelitian deskriptif dilakukan di SMKN 2 Pontianak dengan subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas XI TSM pada Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016 yang dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Hasil dari penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa (1)Sikap negatif merupakan faktor internal yang paling dominan dalam mempengaruhi rendahnya hasil belajar siswa pada pelajaran bahasa Inggris dengan persentase sebesar 78,86% dan digolongkan sebagai pengaruh yang kuat. (2) Dari dua eksternal faktor, lingkungan sekolah yang tidak mendukung merupakan faktor eksternal yang paling dominan dengan persentase sebesar 63,38% dan juga digolongkan sebagai pengaruh kuat dan diikuti oleh kurangnya dukungan dari keluarga dengan persentase sebesar 40,12% yang digolongkan sebagai pengaruh lemah. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa sikap negatif yang didukung oleh lingkungan sekolah yang tidak mendukung memiliki pengaruh negatif yang kuat pada proses belajar mengajar yang berakibat pada rendahnya hasil belajar siswa.   Kata Kunci: Faktor Internal, Faktor Eksternal, Rendahnya Hasil Belajar
