Abstract

Medicinal plants are very beneficial for the health of the Indonesian people. Preservation of medicinal plants can be done in the yard of the house so that it can be said as a family medicinal plant. Most people know the knowledge of the benefits of family medicinal plants from their ancestral heritage. Pasar VI Kualanamau Village is one of the villages from the Beringin District, Deli Serdang Regency, where the community still uses and grows medicinal plants in their yards. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and utilization of medicinal plants in the Pasar VI Kualanamu village community. The method used in this study is the interview method using a questionnaire. Respondents who were included in this study were people who had an interest in family medicinal plants. The results of this study indicate that the majority of the people of Pasar VI Kualanamu Village know quite a lot of types of plants that are useful as medicine, namely 44 types of plants that are known by the community that function as medicinal plants and state that all types of medicinal plants consumed by the respondents are safe for consumption. The types of medicinal plants consumed most by respondents with a percentage value of 100% include turmeric (Curcuma longa), ginger (Zingiber officinale), Red Ginger (Zingiber officinale), and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus). Only a few types of medicinal plants were planted (cultivated) by the respondents themselves, not all types of medicinal plants consumed by the respondents were obtained from the results of their own cultivation (cultivation), some types of medicinal plants consumed were obtained from other communities who have these types of plants.

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance has now become a global problem that can endanger livestock. The use of antibiotics as a trigger for the growth of livestock can have an impact on humans. This study investigated the antibiotic resistance of Ciprofloxacin and Erythromycin against Escherichia coli. 14 samples of E.coli were isolated from the intestinal colon of chickens that were kept conventionally by broiler breeders in Yogyakarta. E.coli isolates were cultured on Eosin Methylene Blue Agar (EMB) media for 24 hours at the Bacteriology Laboratory of the Indonesian Veterinary Research Institute (BBLITVET), Bogor, Indonesia. Ciprofloxacin and Erythromycin antibiotic discs were placed on EMB media and then incubated for 24 hours at 37oC. The diameter of the clear zone of inhibition and the zone of resistance inhibition was measured on each repetition using the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standard. The results obtained showed that the antibiotic Erythromycin had higher resistance than Ciprofloxacin. In conclusion, these two antibiotics can be categorized as susceptible or sensitive to E. coli bacteria

Abstract

Bacterial community is an important element of an ecosystem both on land and in water. In aquatic ecosystems, bacteria that have the ability to produce biofilms have the advantage of being able to easily attach on a substrate. The main function of biofilm is assisting nutrition absorption from water and facilitating bacteria surviveness from unfavorable environmental conditions. This research was conducted to isolate and identify and test the potential of bacteria to form biofilms in vitro. The methodological steps included measuring the physical-chemical parameters of the waters; isolation by pour plating method; characterization and identification  based on morphological, biochemical and Gram staining; as well as testing the activity of biofilm formation by reading technique using microplate reader. The highest bacterial abundance was found at Station 3 (muddy substrate) which was 3.3x106 cfu/ml. Bacterial isolates that had the highest ability to form biofilms in vitro were Bb3, Bb4 and Bb1 isolates with values of 0.3315, 0.2370) and 0.2131, respectively. Bacteria that have the potential to form biofilms from various substrates in the waters of Nangka Island belong to Alcaligenes and Meniscus genera. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that bacteria from rocky substrates have the ability to produce biofilms better than isolates from other substrates.

Abstract

Environmental issues and accompanying problems need to be discussed. However, there has been no systematic literature review (SLR) that focuses on environmental topics. This SLR aims to publish trends in environmental topics in biology education journals in Indonesia, focused on JPBI, Biosfer JPB, and Bioedukatika. The three journals that are the object of this study have shown that they are pro-environmental. As for the three, JPBI can be considered as a journal that consistently publishes environmental themes, because this journal publishes the most articles on environmental themes. From the three journals, it can be seen that there are types of research that are dominantly used in environmental theme research, namely descriptive surveys, quasi-experiments and descriptive qualitative ones. In publications at JPBI, the topic of the environment is inseparable from education and the main subject of education is students. Environment is related to environmental education and environmental literacy. Meanwhile in the JPB Biosphere, environmental topics are also related to the themes of online learning or Blended/hybrid learning. On the other hand, in Bioedukatika the environmental theme is inseparable from the learning aspect. Based on the data, it can be seen that the main contribution of the three journals that are the object of this research is that teachers/lecturers are important actors in developing various abilities or skills of students/students in terms of the environment. Teachers are advised to apply various appropriate learning, which is oriented towards student active/student centered learning, by implementing the suggested learning models. One aspect that needs to be strengthened is the Adiwiyata Program which is the embodiment of green school-style schools in Indonesia. Exploration of local wisdom in various regions in Indonesia related to environmental wisdom is also still needed because it is positive for environmental strengthening.
