Abstract

This writing will answer the skeptical attitude of some people about the authenticity of the Othmani Mushaf  Al-Qur’an with the Othmani standard of Indonesia from the aspect of narration and its scientific  epistemology. The method being used in this research is descriptive analysis. After being observed from some sources and being analyzed by some literature studies, either epistemologically or narrative, the Mushaf al Qur’an with Othmani standard is still referring to the basic of the pattern of the writing of the Mushaf al Qur’an with the Othmani writing and is still in accord with it. In the field of the science of writing the Mushaf (Rasm) is still in the corridor of the agreement which is embodied in the 6 principles of the basic principles of the science of writing of the Othmani, and all are still consistently followed and thus, the argument of the  al-Itq±n by as-Suyuti (w. 911 H) which is considered to be “less authoritative” in the field of writing the Mushaf of the Qur’an can be defeated.

Abstract

One of the most precious aspects of all human potential is intelligence. Intel-ligence, which  arises from  the human brain, has been able to bring people to advanced stages of civilization.  However, these advancements cannot always be enjoyed by modern society as there are those who continue to  experience alienation and isolation. This fact has encouraged the emergence of a concept of intelligence which is based on spiritual, and not merely intellectual strength.  It is popularly called  ‘the spiritual intelligence’. This article  utilises a thematic interpretative approach to explain how the Qur'an views the concept of intelligence as poessessed by individuals.

Abstract

This article describes the characteristics of  a  manuscript  containing  a trans-lation of the Qur’an into  Javanese Pegon  script found in the  collection of the library of the Great Mosque of Surakarta. The translation were composed as teaching material for use in the Madrasah Manba'ul-Ulum, an Islamic boarding school established with  the  support of the Surakarta Kraton and under the authority of His Majesty Sri Pakubuwono IX (1861-1893). The level of language used in the Pegon text is  ordinary  Javanese with  the model  for the  translation being based on exegesis which is the critical explanaton or interpretation of  a religious  text. The manuscript is historical proof of the intimate relationship existing between Islam and the Kraton, as well as the  palace’s role in the development of Islamic education,  in Surakarta in the late of 19th century CE. The manuscript contributed to enriching  pesantren learning  which  is more widely  known for its traditions of  scientific Islamic jurisprudence  (fiqh)  and Sufism at that time.

Abstract

The Great Mosque of Surakarta is among the old mosques in Java that served as a royal mosque. The employees of the mosque  were appointed by the Susunan of Surakarta and granted positions as courtiers. Since October 1, 1948, the management of the Great Mosque has been under the Ministry of Religious Affairs as stated in the Regulation of the Minister of Religious Affairs, dated on January 18, 1947 No. 3/1947 concerning the  finanical resources  of the Great Mosque. Above the Mosque’s mihrab there is found the relief of a tughra,  crown, and a number of Arabic inscriptions, including the names of figures who remind us of the names of the sleepers in the story of the Cave Dwellers (Ashab al Kahfi).

Abstract

The process of translation is beset with problems. On the one hand, translation demands a faithful transfer of the meaning as contained in the source text into the target language, but on the other hand, the process also requires elegance and beauty in the  choice of words and expressions. These obstacles are magnified when the source text in question is the Qur’an, because it is not a man-made creation or a work of fiction or poetry, but the word of God. This article will explore some of these problems with reference to translations of the Qur’an published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indone-sia and three other publishers.

Abstract

Over the past two years, the Committee for the Checking of the Holy  Qur'an (Lajnah Pentashihan Mushaf Al-Qur’an), Jakarta has carried out biographical research on huffaz (those who have learnt the Qur’an by the heart) in Indonesia. This article will attempt to draw out the key linkages from that research, and will also try to trace the role and position of the huffaz  in preserving the traditions and the values of Islamic boarding schools  (pesantren). The experience of these guardians of the Qur'an as documented in this research reflects their persistence, patience and love for practising the teachings of the Qur’an, and it from these qualities that  religious students and  huffaz  emerge.  Their role in helping  to educate the people of the nation is continuously being developed, based on a sincere determination to produce people with a Qur'anic orientation.
