Abstract

In an attempt to increase reading performance at university level. This study aims at perceiving the experiential determinants of EFL students’ online reading performance. Data were collected from 182 undergraduate students’ self-rated questionnaire based on the assigned Indonesian folklores in English version through the online reading platforms. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and factor analysis. The results showed that EFL students’ reading habits and reading frequencies and trends were very supportive, whilst reading effectiveness and reading for pleasure supported their reading performance. Tests of chi-square’s four variables were statistically significant indicating the proportional majority of online reading activity. Meanwhile, the Principal Components Analysis (PCA) indicated two components and variables under the eigenvalues’ square root. The interpretation of two components was coherent with the pilot results on the online reading readability scale, analyzed the use of positive and negative affect items as undertaken from the pattern and structure matrix for PCA with the Obliging rotation. EFL students’ online reading is engaging accordingly since students accomplished their reading performance based on individual accessibilities and habits to understand the contents of genres. This study concludes that EFL students’ online reading performance has been practically facilitated by the technology devices multiply. Hence, four online reading variables increased EFL students’ reading awareness and performance accordingly.

Abstract

The title of this research is “Method and Procedure of Translation used in Anime Quotes from Japanese to Indonesia at Official Account LINE Bahasa Jepang Bersama”. The purpose of the research is to identify the types of technique, procedure, and method of translation applied in translating anime quotes. Theories used in this research are the theory of translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002), the procedure of translation by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), and the translation methods by Newmark (1988). The research data was analyzed by translational equivalence method and glossing. The result of the data analysis indicates that there are several translation techniques applied, they are literal translation, amplification, modulation, linguistic amplification, established equivalence, reduction, and transposition. The most found translation technique is literal translation because its aim is to produce a translation that stick to the originality of the language source text content and form. Then, there are procedures of translation applied, they are literal translation, transposition, and modulation. Thereafter for the method of translation applied they are literal translation, free translation, communicative translation, and idiomatic translation. The most found translation method is free translation because its aim is to produce a translation that fit to the need of target language readers. The translation methods applied tend to be oriented towards the target language.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the verbs that give rise to dative construction and the semantic roles that arise in dative construction in Japanese sentence structure, which includes the agentif role, benefactive role, experience role, and objective role. The theory used in this study is the theory of Givon (2001), Cook's Case Grammar Theory (1979), and the theory of inheritance from Nitta (1991). Data sources are taken from the Japanese corpus, www.kotonoha.gr.jp/shonagon/ This research shows Japanese language is a language marked or a file. The case in Japanese here is closely related to the system of inheritance in the Japanese sentence structure. The marker is attached after noun (noun). The markers or particles that state direct objects are accusative markers 'o' and markers datif 'ni' as markers of indirect objects. The verb found in this study is tatakareta 'has been tapped', yonde kureta 'has read', tooraseta 'has (caused) passed', and oboeta 'has remembered' which can bring up multiple objects, namely the order of direct objects and indirect objects. The results of this study, (1) show the verbs that allow the emergence of multiple objects, especially indirect objects (IO) in the construction of Japanese, are transitive verbs or action verbs and intransitive verbs in the form of idou doushi 'moving verbs' are causative in Japanese language {~ exciting / ~ saseru} means to make / cause, and (2) the semantic roles that arise in the dative construction of Japanese sentence structures (BJ) include (a) agentive roles, (b) benefactive roles, (c) experience roles, and (c) objective roles. Semantically the verbs that give rise to the semantic role are keizoku doushi 'continuous verbs' and shunkan doushi 'pungtual verbs'.

Abstract

The focus of this article is about ellipsis that occurs in the discourse in the Balinese folklore. Ellipsis is a part of the cohesiveness of a discourse so that it becomes a complete discourse. The research method used is descriptive qualitative analysis. This study uses ellipsis theory from Halliday and Hasan which is supported by McCarthy's ellipsis deixis theory. The data source was taken from a collection of tales in the Balinese language, namely the book Pupulan Satua Bali II. The results of this study indicate that the ellipsis that occurs in the book of fairy tales is in the form of nominal ellipsis which refers to humans (people) in the conversation and story prologue, verbal ellipsis that occurs in fairy tale conversations, refers to lexical ellipsis in the verb word class, and the ellipsis of clauses because clauses are considered as expressions of speech functions, such as statements, questions, responses, and clauses that have a structural part consisting of core and propositional elements. Even though there is an ellipsis, the process of conveying the content and message of the story is still effective.

Abstract

This research focuses on the verb equivalent of 'giving' Japanese into Indonesian. Japanese and Indonesian have different expressions of the 'giving' verb, both syntactically and pragmatically. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. In this study, the theory used is semantic theory from Chaer which states lexical meaning and grammatical meaning. The pragmatic theory used in this study is the contextual theory from Pateda. The data source of this study uses data from the Japanese corpus, namely www.kotonoha.gr.jp/shonagon/.The results of this study indicate that syntactically the verbs of sonaeru, sashiageru and sazukeru each have a different structure in Japanese. This is related to the emergence of function markers in arguments in Japanese sentence structures. And semantically, the emergence of the function of the marker affects the meaning and use of the vocabulary
