Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the cohesion and coherence in advertising discourse in The Jakarta Post as well as its implication of the study in teaching reading and writing. The writer used purposive sampling as the method of collecting data. The writer took the data from editions of The Jakarta Post published in October- December 2018. The writer used a cohesion theory suggested by Halliday and Hasan (1976) in analyzing the data. On the contrary in coherence analysis the writer generated Peirce?s semiotic theory of sign (2007) and speech act theory proposed by Austin (1962). Thus, in analyzing the aspect of coherence the writer focused on recognizing and identifying the function of headline as well as the pictures with respect to illocutionary meaning and semiotic meaning. The results of such analysis show that there are three cohesive devices frequently used in the advertising discourse. They are lexical cohesion (51.61%), then reference (25.81%), then substitution (20.97%), and followed by conjunction (4.84%) in which the most presupposed item tends to refer to what is advertised. On the other hand, the headlines and images are both coherent with the idea of the written discourse and speech act meaning as suggested by Austin?s theory. The pictures in the advertising discourse have implication on cultural, social and mythical ideology as suggested by Peirce?s theory of sign. Based on the findings of this research, it can be concluded that the understanding of cohesion and coherence for students will greatly affect the ability of students in reading, interpreting and writing a text. In order to improve the students? proficiency, it is important to introduce variety of texts such as advertising discourse for students especially in University.

Abstract

AbstractThis research dealt with analysis research. It aims to find out: (1) the errors in using cohesive devices in Essay writing written by students; (2) reasons of their errors; (3) the remedial teaching planned to solve the students? error.This descriptive exploratory study was conducted at the Second Semester of English Department Students of Cultural Sciences Faculty of Sebelas Maret University in the Academic Year 2014/2015. There were 48 students as the sample of this study. They are totally chosen as sample because there are two classes of second semester. The data were collected through observation, document analysis, questionnaire, and interview. The researcher used descriptive analysis as follows: (1) the researcher classified the error after the collecting the data; (2) the researcher identified the type of cohesive devices errors of all students? essay; (3) the researcher found the causes of errors. There are some research findings: (1) The students make errors in using reference and conjunction; (2) The cause of their error is intralingua error; (3) The remedial teaching is needed by the students. In this case, the researcher suggests to use project based learning.The result of this study implies that the Second Semester English Department Students of Cultures Sciences Faculty of Sebelas Maret University in the Academic Year 2014 /2015 have weaknesses in cohesive devices especially in reference cohesion, the most dominant error is misformation. However, the most dominant error in conjunction is misordering. At last, the teacher needs to apply remedial teaching to solve the students? error in using cohesive devices, the teacher should use the appropriate activities in writing class.  Keywords: cohesive devices, error, intralingua, remedial teaching..

Abstract

ABSTRACTPada revolusi industry 4.0, pendidikan tidak dapat lagi dipisahkan dari teknologi. Teknologi mempengaruhi semua aspek yang ada pada pendidikan termasuk peserta didik. Teknologi mempengaruhi bagaimana mereka melihat, mendengar, berbicara dan berkomunikasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana penggunaan instagram pada matakuliah Bahasa Inggris Program Studi Pendidikan Ekonomi Universitas Pamulang. Subjek pada penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester 1 yang sedang mengambil matakuliah Bahasa Inggris. Total responden adalah 19 orang mahasiswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan interview yang bersifat terbuka, sehingga responden dapat menjawab pertanyaan wawancara dengan jelas dan lengkap sesuai dengan porsinya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa mendapatkan manfaat yang sangat besar ketika belajar speaking menggunakan akun instagram mereka. Sebagian besar dari mereka menyatakan bahawa; (1) mahasiswa merasa percaya diri dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris, (2) Mahasiswa lebih focus pada penggunaan grammar yang benar ketika berbicara, (3) Mahasiswa lebih mudah untuk mengoreksi postingan temannya, (4) negative komen yang diberikan oleh temannya memotivasi mahasiswa untuk berbicara lebih jelas dan lancar.Kata Kunci : Bahasa Inggris, Instagram, Speaking

Abstract

ABSTRAK                                                                                Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menginvestigasi kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh mahasiswa dalam menyelesaikan soal pada reading section pada TOEFL. Penelitian ini menggunakan design penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dalam upaya untuk mencari tahu kesulitan apa saja yang dihadapi mahasiswa didalam TOEFL khususnya pada reading section. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Pendidikan Ekonomi yang mengikuti tes TOEFL pada tanggal 25 Oktober 2019, total subjek adalah 30 mahasiswa. Didalam mengumpulkan data penelitian, peneliti menggunakan soal tes TOEFL yang mengadopsi soal TOEFL dari buku Deborah Philips. Peneliti melakukan analisa secara langsung dari jawaban benar dan jawaban salah mahasiswa pada soal tes tersebut, setelah itu peneliti mengkorfirmasi kesulitan mahasiswa dengan cara melakukan wawancara terhadap mahasiswa yang memiliki jawaban salah dan benar pada soal- soal tertentu untuk mengetahui penyebab kesulitan yang mereka hadapi. Hasil analisis menemukan bahwa mahasiswa menemukan beberapa kesulitan didalam menyelesaikan soal TOEFL pada reading section. Kesulitan tersebut antara lain; (1) Mahasiswa tidak mempunyai cukup kosa kata dalam Bahasa Inggris, (2) mahasiswa merasa mengantuk saat membaca wacana yang panjang, (3) mahasiswa kesulitan mencari ide pokok dalam teks bacaan, (4) mahasiswa kesulitan menemukan informasi yang disampaikan pada teks bacaan.
