Abstract

This study discussed about the cultural words in the online news sites named BBC News. Itexplained also the techniques, methodes, and ideology choosen and applied by thetranslator. The data was collected from an online news site named BBC News and itstranslation. This research applied the descriptive-qualitative method. This research appliedalso the purposive sampling because the population of this study was too large. Thetechniques are used to analyze the data called as domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, andcomponential analysis. Then, for the result of all of analysis named as cultural themeanalysis. The finding of this research presented all of cultural words included in Newmark’sdescription. Some techniques employed to translate the cultural words, namely adaptation(14), addition (3), established equivalent (24), generalization (5), and pure borrowing (14).Addition is the least employed translation technique, but the most frequently is technique ofestablished equivalent. Then, the method which emphasis on the target language is choosen.In terms of ideology, the ideology of domestication is the ideology which is choosen andapplied by the translator.Keywords:  Translation, Cultural Words, Techniques, Methods, Ideology

Abstract

The research is concerned with American Dream in Arthur Miller’s Death of aSalesman. The objectives of the research are to describe Willy Loman’s badattitudes and actions, describe Willy Loman’s good attitudes and actions inachieving American dream, and to analyze the results of the American dreampursuit in the story. The first theory that is used in this research is American valueto figure out Willy Loman’s bad and good attitudes and actions and the secondtheory is American dream that is used to analyze the results of American dreampursuit. While, the method of this research, the writer used descriptive method,and for the technique of data collecting, the writer used document analysis. Then,there are two approaches that are  used in the analysis namely sociological andpsychological approaches. In the research, the writer found the bad attitudes andactions in the story of Death of a Salesman through the main character, WillyLoman are maintaining his pride, manipulated by his thought, keeping on hisunreal social status, and pretending to be rich.  Moreover, the good attitudes andactions in this story are working hard, initiative and full of ambition, getting ofopportunity, getting ready for the competition, and struggling for his family’s life.Furthermore, the results of the main character in pursuing the American dreamalso found in this story, that are losing the real identity of life, getting jealous ofthe success of the other’s life, living in life of full the illusion and delusional,being a stubborn man, being an arrogant man and the last ending with theunhappy ending life. In conclusion, the main character, Willy Loman could notreach his happiness of his life that is caused by his wrong perspective of his mindabout achieving the American dream. And he decided to end his life by suicidehimself to get the money insurance for his family.

Abstract

The  objectives  of  this  study  entitled  Feministic  Responses  Toward  PatriarchalSociety in Jane Austen Emma are (1) To describe patriarchal culture in Jane AustenEmma (2) To describe feministic responses toward the patriarchal culture in JaneAusten Emma (3) To describe the effects of Emma’s feministic point of views. Thewriter used document analysis to analyze the analysis. The main data is taken fromnovel  of Emma.  Some  theories  used  to  analyze  the  data  are Character,  Setting,Patriarchal Society, and Feminism. Moreover, the approaches used in thisresearch are sociological approach and historical approach. For the result, theresearcher finds Emma’s feministic response toward patriarchal society, the effect ofEmma’s feministic point of view after seeing this patriarchal society EmmaWoodhouse would have been breaking this rule. Emma decide that without men shewas already have anything such as wealth and social status. She even marrying Mr.Knightley which is based on love.
