Abstract

Different eating patterns between vegetarians and non vegetarians may affect oral and dental health. The aim of this study was to know the difference of oral hygiene and dental caries condition between vegetarians and non vegetarians at Maha Vihara Maitreya Medan. The design of study was cross sectional study. Samples consisted of 74 vegetarians and 65 non vegetarians. Oral hygiene measurement used OHIS index from Greene and Vermillion. Dental caries measurement used DMFT index from Klein, where as data about eating patterns were obtained from respondents by using questionnaire. The results showed that the mean OHIS score for vegetarian group was 2.20, as for non vegetarian group was 2.52. The mean DMFT score for vegetarian group was 5.78, as for non vegetarian group was 7.02. The eating patterns of carbohydrate source foods, vegetables and fruits were almost identical between vegetarians and non vegetarians, the difference was on the protein source food consumption. The most protein source which was consumed by vegetarians was soybean and its refined product, where as for non vegetarians ware meat. As conclusion, there were significant differences about oral hygiene and dental caries condition between vegetarians and non vegetarians.

Abstract

Dental and oral health is the highet sixth complaint of the Indonesian people and was the most fourth ranked expensive treatment disease. The aim of this study was to know treatment need of periodontal disease and dental health care behavior. The type of research was a descriptive survey. CPITN index was used for assessing periodontal treatment need collecting data used interview assisted with questionnaire. The result showed that all respondents need periodontal treatment. Based on the highest periodontal score the percentage of calculus was the highest(73.57), followed by pocket 4-5 mm 19.3%, pocket > 6 mm 5.3%. A total of 75.77 respondents brushed their teeth twice a day, unfortunetly they brush their teeth while taking a bath. Based on the mean of CPITN sextan of, 5.2 sextands need professional scaling,0,1 sextant need comprehensive care and 0,3 need to improve oral hygien. In conlusion, most of the responden (75%) had calculus, pocket 4-5 mm 19.3%, and pocket > 6 mm 5.3%.

Abstract

Orthodontic toothbrush designed specifically to eliminate plaque around brackets, but there are still many patient who use conventional toothbrush. This study aimed to know the effect of an orthodontic toothbrush compare to a conventional toothbrush in reducing plaque index. The plaque index used was a modification of patient hygiene performance (PHP) index developed by Podshadley and Haley. The design of this study was a pre and posttest experimental design. Sample consist of 80 students of dental faculty. The results of the t- test statistical analysis s howed that there was a significant difference of reduction plaque index from 2.96 to 2.07 (p <0.05). It can be concluded that a specific orthodontictoothbrush has a better role to reduce the plaque index than a conventional toothbrush.
