Abstract

                                                  ABSTRACT       This research is entitled “Striving for Superiority of August as Seen in Wonder Film” is intended as a requirement to accomplish the bachelor’s degree at Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University Manado. This research focus on the psychological condition of August, the actions striving for superiority of August. The purposes of this research are to identify, classify, analyze, and describe the striving for superiority actions of August and the factor that causes the striving for superiority of August. This research used descriptive qualitative method by Bogdan and Biklen (1982). In identifying, classifying, and analyzing the data, the writer used two theories of individual psychology by Adler to analyze the striving for superiority and to analyze the factor causes striving for superiority by Adler (in Boeree, 2005:135). The results of this research are August did two actions striving for superiority, that are compensation and superiority complex. The factor that causes the striving for superiority of August is an action for filling of a desire and potential, which encourages for attaining of a goal.Keywords: Superiority, Inferiority, Wonder, Psychology

Abstract

                                                    ABSTRACT           This research entitled “Expression of Compliment in The Film John Wick by Derek Kolstad”. The aims of this research to identify, classify, and analyze the compliment utterances and their functions in John Wick film. This research used a descriptive method. The data were collected from conversation among characters, then classified and analyzed them according to the concept of Holmes (1986). The result shows that there are five types of compliment utterances and their function applied by the characters in their dialogues. First, ability it consists of 9 compliment utterances based on compliment abilities that function to express solidarity and admiration for abilities that are real. Second, possessions consist of 4 compliment utterances based on compliments of possession that serves to express an admiration for human property that is real deserves compliment or appreciation. Third, physical appearance consist of 3 compliment utterances the function of expression a sense of attraction will fascinate the physical appearance who intends to give real compliment without the desire to mock that can establish a smooth and positive communication relationship. Fourth, Personality consist of 13 compliment utterances based on personality compliment that serves to express a sense of solidaity, admiration, appreciation of the behavior, character, or, nature of someone who can bulid one’s self-confidence. Fifth, quality consist of 6 compliment utterances based serves to express a sense of appreciation for someone good and bad qualities. This compliment phrase also serves to appreciate the actions or qualities produced by someone who can bulid one’s enthusiasm.Key words : Compliment utterances, pragmatic analysis, Film : John Wick

Abstract

                                                 ABSTRACT     In English, there are two subclasses of verb, they are lexical verbs and auxiliary verbs. Auxiliary verb is a helping verb which grammatically functions to form or to add meaning of the verb phrase. This study is an attempt to describe and analyze the auxiliary verbs which are found in the album of Ed Sheeran Devide and No. 6 Collaborations Project. The aim of this research is to identify and analyze the form and meaning of auxiliary verb used in the album. The method in this research is descriptive method. The data of auxiliary verbs have been taken from the sentences in the album of Ed Sheeran Devide and No. 6 Collaborations Project and analyzed by using Quirk and Greenbaum’s concept. The result of this study show that the auxiliary verbs found in the two album of Ed Sheeran are categorized into two classes: primary auxiliary verb (am, is, are, were, was) and modal auxiliary verbs (can, could, may, might, will, would, should) however must, shall, used to, need, be supposed to and dare are not found in these album. In terms of the meaning, the primary auxiliary verbs have no meaning depending on the context. Can means ability and negative it means inability. Could means ability and with negative it means inability. Will means willingness, representation of some, situation, promise and agreement. Would means willingness. Abstract

                                                   ABSTRACT     The title of this research is “Jenis dan Makna Simbol dalam Upacara Pernikahan Keluarga Kerajaan Inggris dan Bolango (Sebuah Analisis Kontrastif)”. The study is an attempt to describe and analyze the contrast of symbols in England and Bolango which focuses on Royal wedding ceremony in relations to theirs patterns and classes in both cultures. Royal wedding ceremony is a part of cultures and traditions while symbols are the basis of cultures. Symbols is used as a tool of communication guides to broadening the horizons of cultural insight in humans. This research used descriptive method. The data were taken from Library research and field research, in this case choosing informants and giving the interview. The data were collected, analyze, and described to find out the forms of Symbols in royal wedding ceremony the writer used theory Peirce (2010). After that, the meaningof symbols were analyzed by using Glasser’s theory (1972). The result of this study is Symbols in royal wedding ceremony in England and Bolango each have five settled symbols that has been contrasted using Lado’s (1957) theory.Keywords: Symbols, contrastive analysis, England and Bolango

Abstract

                                                  ABSTRACT     This research entitled Mood in English and Manado Malay Language: A Contrastive Analysis. The aims of this study are to identify and classify the kinds and functions of mood and analyze the differences and similarities of mood in English and Manado Malay language. This research used a descriptive method. The writer used Aarts and Aarts (1982) and Frank (1972) theory to identify and classify the kinds and functions of mood and Lado’s (1957) theory to contrast both languages to find out the differences and similarities. The result of this research shows 3 kinds of mood with each function in both languages. Kinds and functions of mood in English are indicative mood to declare all situation without the imperative and subjunctive mood, subjunctive mood to declare uncertainty, wish, and encourage, and imperative mood to declare command, request and instruction. Kinds and functions of mood in Manado Malay language are indicative mood to declare all situation, subjunctive mood to declare uncertainty and encourage, and imperative mood to declare command, instruction, and request. The similarity in both languages are has the same definition and function to explain a fact (indicative) or nonfact (subjunctive, imperative) situation. The differences in both languages are English has regular and irregular verb and using ‘to be’ to distinguish singular and plural, whereas Manado Malay language has no an alteration of verb form towards singular or plural.Keywords: Mood, Manado Malay Language, Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

                                                    ABSTRACT     This research entitled “Penggambaran Tragedi Pahlawan dalam Film Gladiator oleh Ridley Scott” is intended as a requirement to accomplish the ”Sarjana” degree at Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University Manado. The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze tragic hero characteristics on film Gladiator by Ridley Scott. The writer uses qualitative research method with film and narrative elements approach in order to identify and classify how it is support the representation of tragic hero on theme, characterizations, conflict, and settings through the Gladiator film. The writer uses the theory of tragic hero by Aristotle as the main theory to analyze the tragic hero in Gladiator film. The result of this research shows that the element of narrative on theme, characterizations, conflict and settings being depicted through the film in order to build the environment of tragedy. This environment helps showing the tragedy process of the main character in the film while picturing the idea of tragic hero based on Aristotle theory. Maximus as the main character in Gladiator film endures the tragic hero completely based on Aristotle theory. As the film Gladiator runs to the end of the film, Maximus endures the elements of tragedy in several specific scenes to picture hamartia, hubris, peripertia, anagronisis, nemesis, and carthasis.Keyword: Tragic Hero, Gladiator, Film, Aristotelian, Ridley Scott.
