Abstract

The high quality of semen is important to support fertilization and semen collection for the insemination. One of the factors influencing the semen quality is feed. The feed shortages and the excess of feed, both of them affect on the semen production and its quality. So the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of feed restriction on the semen characteristics of Mojosari duck. 60 Mojosari ducks(male) were used. They were reared from 4-39 weeks age. This experiment used complete randomize design. As treatment was the restriction on feeding, that consist of four levels : ad libitum (100%) for starter-layer period (P1), feed on starter-grower 100%, layer 85% (P2), feed on starter-grower85%, layer 100% (P3), and feed on starter-layer 85% (P4). The result of this study showed that the treatments did not significantly affect on volume semen per ejaculat, spermatozoa concentration, total spermatozoa per ejaculat, motility, viability, and percentage of spermatozoa abnormality. Spermatozoa without tail on P1 was higher significant than those on another treatments (P2, P3, and P4). This study indicated that feed restriction (85% adlibitum) from starter-layer period (P4) on the Mojosari duck was sufficient to produce semen with high quality.

Abstract

Duck eggsplay a role inmaking salted eggs. This is becausethe duck eggshavea higherfat contentandlowerwater contentthanthose from chicken eggs or another poultry eggs. However, saltiness and grittiness level of salted eggs that were prefered byconsumers are still unknown. So the aim of this study was to evaluate the physical, chemiccal and organoleptic characteristics of salted eggs by salting with pressure level and salt concentration different.180 fresh duck eggswere used. This research used factorial pattern of complete randomize design 3x2. As treatments were pressure levels (0 bar, 1.5 bar, and 3 bar) and salt concentrations (20% and 25%).The parameters that observed included physical characteristic (grittiness level of salted egg yolk), chemical characteristics (contents of water and NaClin eggwhite and yolk), and organoleptic characteristics (general appearance, saltiness and grittiness of salted eggs). Data of physical and chemical characteristics were descriptivelly analyzed, while data of organoleptic characteristics were non-parametric statistically analyzed. The high level of pressure and the salt concentration that used in salting eggs produced salted eggs with the value of grittiness and NaCl content were high, but the value of water content was low. Combination of treatment without pressure (0 bar) with 20% and 25% salt concentrations, and on 1.5 bar pressure level with 20% salt concentration produced the salted egg that more prefered by panelists.

Abstract

Local chicken in Indonesia is commonly maintained traditionally for meat consumption so that ithas the potential to be developed as an economical livestock commodities. The increasing of meat local chicken demand should be followed by the increasing of its quality. FMO3 gene as a gene that control meat quality especially controlling fish odor in livestock product, can be used as a functional gene in its function as a genetic marker. This research was aimed to identify the FMO3 gene polymorphism in exon 6 inbroiler, kampung, sentul, merawang, pelung and nunukan chicken population. Identification of polymorphism was used 129 samples from those populations. AlwnIenzyme was used in PCR-RFLP technique to digest PCR product overnight.Genotypingshowed only AA genotype (275/249 bp) in 524 bp product amplification. There was no polymorphism found in every population. It needs further study in the different sequences to findthe polymorphism of FMO3 in local chicken.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to study the blood profile on kampung chicken and commercial laying hen that was reared in the open house of tropical zone. The study correlated with its level stress that caused by the high of rearing temperature. The kampung chicken and commercial laying hen, respectively 20 birds (32 week of aged) was used in this study. All of the chickens were placed in individual cage that has been providedrandomly in a pen. In the fourth week of the rearing was performed taking of blood sample to blood profile assays. The result showed that the profile of eritrocytes and leucocytes of kampung chicken were in the normal range physiologically. The value of hemotocrit, Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), and Mean CorpuscularHemoglobin (MCH) from commercial laying hen were lower than the normal range. The heterophiles/limphocytes value of kampung chicken (0.80) was lower than commercial laying hen (3.47). It can be concluded that kampung chicken was more healthy and more adaptive to the high rearing temperature in the open house of tropical zone.

Abstract

Housing temperature and housing system may influence productive performance and egg qualities. This research aimed to investigate the influence of different housing temperatures and housing system on productive performance and egg qualities. A total of 72 Lohmann hens were reared in litter and cage system with different housing temperatures of 18oC and 30oC. Each treatment consisted of 18 hens. Traits measured were productive performance (feed intake, hen day production, egg weight, egg mass, and feed conversion), egg internal and external qualities (egg shape index, Haugh Unit, air sack, albumin height, egg shell cleanless, egg shell thickness, and egg shell weight).  This experiment was run twice according to housing system for each housing temperatures and was completely randomized design. Data was subjected to t-test and descriptive analyses. Productive production and egg quality in both housing systems did not differ. However, the egg weight was significantly heavier in cage system compared to litter system in neutral housing temperature.

Abstract

This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of different IgY concentrations on the production performance and quality of semen sentul cocks with different total IgY in serum. This research used 20 sentul cocks with 4 month age consisted of 10 cocks with high IgY concentration and 10 cocks with low IgY concentration. Variabels observed included production performance (feed consumption, weight gain of feed conversion, final body weight, mortality)  and quality semen (macroscopic and microscopic). Study was designed using completely randomized design (RAL) with 2 treatments. All treatments were repeated 10 times. The results started that IgY concentrations treatment did not affect DMA production performance and quality of semen, but signicantly affecting (p<0.05) mass movement of spermatozoa.

Abstract

Transportation of broiler chickens in Indonesia from cage to traditional slaughterhouse has the potential to cause stress because it does not heed the elements of animal welfare. Thus, this study aims to examine the impact of transport time to hematological value with ZnSO4 given in broiler chickens. The research design used was Randomized Block Design (RAK) of factorial with two treatment factors. Treatment factors are transport time (1, 2, and 3 hours) and supplementation of ZnSO4 (0, 80, and 160 ppm). Total of 144 male broiler chickens aged 4 weeks were the object of observation. Transportation performed in the early morning. Parameters studied were hematology value which are consists of erythrocyte count, hemoglobin level, hematocrit value, and erythrocyte index. The data analysis was done statistically using IBM SPSS version 20. Transport time proved to affect hematological value of birds seen from the changes, which are decrease of erythrocyte count and hematocrit values. Birds were indicated microcytic anemia based on low MCV value. Supplementation of ZnSO4through drinking water at 80 and 160 ppm for 7 days prior to slaughter was able to maintain hemoglobin and MCH as well as MCHC of birds up to 2 hours of transport time.

Abstract

The population of commercial broiler chickens in Indonesia is increasing along with the high level of consumption of Indonesian poultry meat. The difference in the weight of broiler chicken harvest due to sex differences allows for differences in the percentage of carcass, non carcass and physical quality of broiler chicken meat. The aim of study was to analysis the sex differences in broiler chickens against the carcass and non carcass characteristics produced. 10 broiler chickens, each of male and female aged 30 days randomized from 14 000 broiler chickens that maintained in closed house were analyzed. The variables observed were carcass characteristics (carcass percentage, cut up of carcass, edible and non edible carcass components, and physical quality of breast meat) and non carcass characteristics (non carcass components). The data obtained were analyzed using the t-test. The average body weight of male and female chickens were 1 834.10 g and 1 659.40 g. The carcases percentage of male and female broilers were 69.38% and 70.78%. The bone percentage of male and female broilers were 17.27% and 15.56%. The cooking shrinkage value of male and female broilers breast meat were 36.32% and 42.50%. As a conclusion, male broilers with greater body weight produced a smaller significant of carcas percentage, and a significantly greater of bone percentage, but had better in physical quality than female broiler chickens.
