Abstract

This article argues that teaching English through distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic requires an appropriate teaching method. This is since English language teaching (ELT) is not only aimed at guiding learners to master language skills, but also to learn independently and have a positive attitude towards learning English. To achieve this goal, this article promotes the implementation of the eclectic method to ELT for Junior and Senior High School learners through distance learning. Through the library research method, this research discovers the concept of distance learning, the characteristics of the eclectic method and its application strategy. Five main strategies are proposed for applying eclectic method, namely providing meaningful learning activities, finding eclectic features in various language teaching methods, applying contextual learning, giving various assignments, and providing differentiated feedback. It is concluded that beside to mediate the various language teaching methods with their strengths and weaknesses, this method also becomes a vehicle to lead the learners to learn English language independently. In brief, the eclectic method is feasible for English language teaching through distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The primary focus of this study is to determine the effect of teaching vocabulary in contextualization for young learners. Vocabulary is one of the central components in a language included in English. According to Luppescu and Day (1993: 266)," Building a large vocabulary is essential when learning English because people with large vocabularies are more proficient than those with limited vocabularies. It occurs because the young learners who want to speak English with limited vocabulary, they will get difficulty during speaking with partners. They will stop their conversation or they will do code-mixing while talking with partners. It happens because the young learners will get the obstacle with the word that will be delivered because the speakers do not have enough storage in vocabulary. The obstacle appeared because the teachers order the young learners to memorize the word. Consequently, It can make the young learners easier to forget the words memorized by them. It happens because in that age (young learners), they need to understand the contex and the used of the each vocabularies that is provided by the teachers. Therefore, this study is proposed to solve the problem by giving the suggested strategy which is using contextualization in teaching vocabulary for young learners.

Abstract

Speaking skill has been considered as the most challenging of the four language skills.  This skill contains a complex process of constructing meaning and requires learners to produce utterances not only correct linguistically but also appropriate pragmatically. To achieve the target, the learners need to be trained to have knowledge about language consciously (language awareness). For this reason, there is a need for considerable amount of effort required to create an appropriate method for teaching speaking without depending on one specific method or approach of teaching.  In this case, the use of eclectic method can be considered as one of alternative methods which involves the use of a variety of language teaching methods. The eclectic method was introduced in the beginning of 1990’s and became fashionably popular these days. The appearance of method is enhanced by the fact that every method of language teaching has strength and limitation. The eclectic method is a combination of different method of teaching and learning. Several different teaching methods are used to be adapted based on needs and abilities of learners. Effectively, this method also belongs to any kind of learners’ strength and learning style with the irrespective of age and level. This paper is aimed at discussing about the practical considerations of applying eclectic method in term of rising learners’ language awareness in oral communication skill. The discussion is begun form the advances that have been made in teaching of speaking over the last decades. It then considers how this knowledge becomes the basis for teaching speaking based on eclectic method.

Abstract

Character education which is variously known as values education, moral education, and transmission of core values is regarded as one of the important aspects in education. In Indonesia, character education has become a central theme of Indonesian education since 2010 which is included into School Based Curriculum (KTSP). Moreover, character education is mentioned in the objectives of national education and considered as the basis of the vision of national building to create a society which is characterized by good deeds, moral, ethics, culture, and good civilization. One of strategies in the character education is through the reactivation of the current curriculum which has already contained character education. English as one of compulsory subjects in the curriculum of Indonesian education can be a vehicle to explore values which are taught in character education. Thus, English language teaching (ELT) does not merely focus on how to lead the learners are competent in the language skills, but also guide them to internalize the values for character building. This paper highlights some strategies of character education in English language teaching. The discussion specifically is directed to the strategy of integration of character education into English teaching in terms of course design, instructional materials, classroom technique, and classroom management.   Keyword: character education, core values, contextual teaching and learning (CTL)

Abstract

Studies on the differences in the use of language by men and women are indeed very limited when viewed from a purely biological tendency. In fact, many studies have found that men's language is different from women's language socio-politically and culturally. This difference is constructed by the social order that is closely related to the problem of domination of power in the relationship between men and women. The study of gender differences in language under descriptive perspective aims to reveal the facts of social life in term of differences in roles and relations between women and men in the use of language. In addition, this research also discusses the perspective of moral values education, especially those from the Qur'an regarding the differences between women and men in terms of language use.
