Abstract

B.IndonesiaAda bermacam metode atau pendekatan dalam proses pembelajaran kalimat pasif dalam bahasa Inggris. Namun, dalam studi ini ditemukan fenomena klise dalam memahami kalimat pasif. Pada umumnya, kalimat pasif dipahami sebagai pertukaran posisi subyek dan obyek. Pemahaman seperti inilah yang menjadi hambatan bagi siswa Indonesia dalam menyusun atau menggunakan kalimat pasif dalam bahasa Inggris. Untuk itu, studi ini mengkaji metode dan pendekatan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang lebih menitikberatkan pada makna kalimat pasif daripada struktur kalimat pasif tersebut. Dalam studi ini ditemukan bahwa pemahaman makna dapat meningkatkan pemahaman siswa terhadap kalimat pasif.B.EnglishThere are variety of method for teacher in explaining passive voice. However, from the response of the student, it could be seen there is a stereotype for student understanding the topic. Mostly, student comprehend passive voice as an exchange position of subject and object. This interpretation makes a confuse for Indonesian student in developing passive sentence. Therefore, this study attempted to examine the teaching method in developing passive sentence by focusing on the contextual meaning rather than on the structure. It was found that this approach increases Indonesian EFL students’ understanding toward English passive voice.

Abstract

Teacher and student of English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) feel quite difficult to understand conditional sentence in learning process. Therefore, there is necessity to change the method or technique in teaching this subject. This study attempts to analyse alternative method on teaching conditional sentence called as discourseoriented teaching. Therefore, it was suitable in this study to use discourse analysis which deal with context of an utterance. The case was a teaching learning process in class of aircraft maintenance program which concern on giving and understanding English verbal instruction on their career. This study found that discourse-oriented teaching could be an alternative method on teaching conditional sentence. It may require a great effort for the teacher to give contextual explanation for each type of conditional sentence, but it is effective for student to understand the usage of each type of conditional sentence in workplace.

Abstract

B.Indonesia TOEFL® menjadi salah alat ukur yang digunakan sejumlah perusahaan jasa penerbangan di Indonesia dalam proses rekrutmen untuk mengetahui kecakapan berbahasa Inggris calon pegawai. Dalam kurikulum Program Studi Teknik Listrik Bandara di Politeknik Penerbangan Indonesia Curug pun menempatkan TOEFL® Preparation dalam silabus mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris dengan target skor tertentu. Untuk itu, perlu kajian mendalam untuk melihat kesesuaian antara tujuan pembelajaran dengan design pembelajaran. Penelitian ini pun dilakukan untuk melihat faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi proses pembelajaran TOEFL® Preparation menurut design pembelajaran. Dari kajian ini, ditemukan bahwa faktor signifikan yang mempengaruhi proses pembelajaran adalah (1) kelas TOEFL® Preparation dinilai besar/large class dan (2) tingkatan kemampuan awal bervariasi/multilevel skill. Studi ini juga merekomendasikan untuk dilakukan perubahan design dengan menyesuaikan karakter kelas. B.English TOEFL® becomes one of the measuring instruments used by several aviation service companies in Indonesia in the recruitment process to figure out the prospective employee's speaking skills. Meanwhile, an advanced English has been placed on the curriculum of Electrical Engineering Study Program at Indonesian Civil Aviation Polytechnic. A kind of TOEFL® Preparation was listed in the syllabus of this program which require specific TOEFL® score to pass the subject. Therefore, it was proper to carry out a study in order to examine the congeniality between the learning objectives and the class design. Hence, this study was conducted to examine factors that influence the learning process of TOEFL® preparation according to the existing class design. From this study, it was found two significant factors that influence learning process: (1) the class was regarded as large class and (2) the student initial skill was varied. This study recommends to change the class design which is more suitable to the class character

Abstract

-To improve students‟ English proficiency, Indonesian Civil Aviation Institute has placed TOEFL® preparation in the curriculum of study program. Nevertheless, the learning design was not common compared with similar program of TOEFL® preparation in another institution. ICAI put a single teacher in class consisted of 24 students with various skills. Consequently, the English teacher had to employ a strategy to cope with this large multilevel class. This qualitative research was conducted to analyze the teacher‟s strategy. Its purpose is to give enlightenment toward the conformity between learning design and learning objectives. A pre-test and post-test were given to a determined class and the grades were compared to see the fulfillment of the objective. An observation and note taking was undertaken during the learning process to explain the strategy. The result shows that the teacher occupy cooperative learning through flexible grouping to cope the class challenge. While the result shows 57% students in the class were able to gain 500 as minimum required score, it has implication in examining the learning design in broader context.
