Abstract

This research aims to find out whether there is any significant interaction between motivation and learning style on students’ English achievement in Bandar Lampung. This research is a non-experimental study with variant analysis study. The research involves 430 students of Science Department, Faculty of Teaching and Education, University of Lampung, Indonesia. Data were taken by giving a set of test in which validity and reliability are tested. Data for motivation and learning styles were taken from students’ reponses to multiple choice questionnaire each consisting of 40 questions. The results of the analysis show that there is no significant interaction between motivation and learning styles on students’ English Achievement. This means that the combination of motivation and learning styles cannot distinguish between high achiever students and the lower ones. Learning styles have significant influence on students’ English achievement. Students with different learning styles have different English achievement. Motivation does not have significant effect on students’ English achievement. Students with different motivation did not have different result of English achievement.Keywords: motivation, learning styles, English achievement.

Abstract

Interlanguage theory is naturally a constantly evolving theory, having changed considerably since its initial formulation. It is, therefore, not an easy task to produce an accurate account of the theory. The aim of this article is basically to provide a brief and composite account of the interlanguage theory. In so doing, some crucial issues are accordingly viewed: (1) error analysis, (2) stages of interlanguage development, (3) Interlanguage transfer, (4) fossilization, (5) input hypothesis, (6) and pidginization fossilization, I ginization as well. There is in fact considerable disagreement about how best to characterize the nature of an interlanguage system. Nevertheless, this principle is able to account for insights provided byform-function analysis.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada i) perbedaan signifikan pada kemampuan kosa kata siswa setelah diajar dengan menggunakan text twist game, dan ii) tipe content word mana yang paling meningkat setelah diajar menggunakan text twist game. One group pretest and posttest design adalah desain yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui pretest dan posttest. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada kemampuan kosa kata siswa setelah diajar menggunakan text twist game dilihat dari hasil t-value yang lebih besar dari t-table. Sehingga, dapat disarankan bahwa text twist game sebagai technique yang membantu siswa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan kosa kata mereka. Hasil selanjutnya menunjukkan bahwa adverb adalah tipe content word yang paling meningkat setelah mengimplementasikan text twist game. This research aimed to find out i) whether there was a significant difference on students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by using text twist game, and ii) which type of content words improved the most after the implementation of this game. A one group pretest and posttest design was used in this research. The data were collected from a pre-test and a post-test. The result showed that there was a significant difference of the students’ vocabulary mastery after they were taught through text twist game since the t-value was higher than t-table. This indicates that text twist game facilitates the students to improve their vocabulary mastery. The second finding revealed an adverb was the type of content words which improved the most after the students were taught through text twist game. Keywords: vocabulary mastery, text twist game, teaching vocabulary, content words

Abstract

In fact, there has been much debate over the utility of composition as tests of language proficiency and even as tests of writing skill. This article, nonetheless, will clarify that subjective methods of evaluating and objective scoring technique are strongly correlated. Some studies have also found that lecturer judgments of a subjective sort have substantial reliability and are significantly correlated with similar judgments by independent raters and with objective scores computed over the same composition work. In this article, how both holistic evaluation and objective measures are operated in the classroom of English writing will accordingly be discussed.Key words: holistic evaluation, objective scoring methods, language proficiency, coherence, unity

Abstract

The goal of all scientific studies is to explain, predict, and control phenomena. The goal is based on assumption that all behaviors and events are orderly and that they are effects which have discoverable causes. Progress toward this goal involves acquisition of knowledge and the development of testing of theories.
